What Is Stainless Steel 904L Pipe?
Stainless Steel 904L Pipe is made from low-carbon, high-alloy austenitic stainless steel (UNS N08904). It contains approximately 20% chromium, 25% nickel, 4–5% molybdenum, and 1–2% copper. This composition provides strong resistance to many acids, chlorides, and aggressive chemical environments. Compared with 316L stainless steel, 904L offers better resistance to certain corrosive conditions, making it suitable for chemical processing, fertiliser plants, and other demanding industrial applications.

Stainless Steel 904L Pipes
High-quality Stainless Steel 904L Pipes manufactured for demanding applications across chemical processing, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, marine, oil and gas and engineering industries. Available in seamless, ERW and EFW forms with various sizes, wall thicknesses and manufacturing specifications.
Why Choose Stainless Steel 904L Pipe?
Stainless Steel 904L Pipe offers excellent corrosion resistance, good strength, and reliable performance in demanding industrial environments. Its high nickel, chromium, molybdenum, and copper content helps it withstand many acidic and chloride-rich conditions where standard stainless steel grades may not perform as well.
- High Corrosion Resistance: Handles many aggressive acids and corrosive chemicals.
- Resistance to Pitting: Molybdenum helps protect the pipe against localised corrosion in chloride-containing environments.
- Good Acid Resistance: Copper improves resistance to certain reducing acids, including sulphuric acid.
- Durable Performance: Supports long-term use in suitable industrial operating conditions.
- Wide Industrial Applications: Used in chemical plants, fertiliser units, pulp and paper mills, and desalination systems.
- Low-Carbon Composition: Helps reduce the risk of sensitisation during welding when proper fabrication practices are followed.
Stainless Steel 904L Pipe is a practical choice for applications that demand reliable corrosion resistance and consistent performance. Selecting the correct size, pressure rating, and material specification helps ensure safe and efficient operation.
Types of Stainless Steel 904L Pipe
A reliable Stainless Steel 904L Pipe manufacturer offers different pipe types to meet industrial requirements for corrosion resistance, pressure, dimensions, and fabrication. Each type serves specific applications based on its design and manufacturing process.
- Seamless Pipes: Made without a welded seam, these pipes suit critical process lines and applications that require reliable performance under pressure.
- ERW Pipes: Manufactured by forming and welding steel strips, these pipes are suitable for various industrial applications involving corrosive fluids.
- TIG Welded Pipes: Produced using TIG welding, these pipes offer controlled weld quality for applications with specific fabrication requirements.
- EFW Large-Diameter Pipes: Made using electric fusion welding, these pipes suit projects requiring larger diameters and specified wall thicknesses.
- Heavy Wall Pipes: Available in thicker wall configurations to meet specific pressure and design requirements.

Stainless Steel 904L Pipe Sizes, Dimensions and Schedules
A pipe is named by its nominal size, but its wall depends on the schedule. Lighter schedules save weight and cost where pressure is low. Heavier schedules handle pressure and give extra wall for corrosion allowance, which is common on acid lines. DN is the metric size for each NPS.
| Schedule | Wall at 2" / DN 50 (mm) | Wall at 6" / DN 150 (mm) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5S | 1.65 | 2.77 | Low-pressure, light-duty lines |
| 10S | 2.77 | 3.40 | General corrosive service |
| 40S | 3.91 | 7.11 | Standard process piping |
| 80S | 5.54 | 10.97 | Higher pressure and corrosion allowance |
| 160 | 8.74 | 18.26 | Very high pressure |
Typical outside diameter tolerance for ASTM A312 pipe is below.
| Pipe size (NPS) | OD tolerance (mm) |
|---|---|
| ⅛" to 1½" | +0.4 / −0.8 |
| Over 1½" to 4" | +0.8 / −0.8 |
| Over 4" to 8" | +1.6 / −0.8 |
| Over 8" to 18" | +2.4 / −0.8 |
Wall thickness tolerance is −12.5% on A312 pipe. We also cut, bend and prepare ends to your drawing.

FAQs
Common questions about SS 904L pipe, acid resistance, welding, standards and supply.
Is 904L better than 316L?
For acids and chlorides, yes. 904L resists sulphuric and phosphoric acid and pitting far better than 316L. For mild fluids, 316L is cheaper and enough.
How does 904L compare with duplex 2205?
They have similar pitting resistance. 904L is stronger against sulphuric and phosphoric acid, while duplex 2205 has higher strength.
Does 904L need heat treatment after welding?
Normally no. The very low carbon keeps welds corrosion resistant, but the weld should use a matching or over-alloyed filler such as ER385.
What is the maximum working temperature?
904L is generally used below about 450°C. Above that, the structure can change and lose toughness.
Which standard should I specify for 904L pipe?
Use ASTM A312 for general pipe. Use B677 for seamless and B673 for welded pipe in UNS N08904.
How do I calculate the weight of 904L pipe?
Use (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02513, with both values in mm, to get kg per metre. Multiply by length for total weight.
Which documents come with an order?
EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates are included. Inspection reports, PMI reports and third-party certificates are available on request.
How is 904L pipe packed for export?
Pipes are capped, bundled and wrapped in waterproof sheeting, then strapped or crated. Heat numbers are marked on each bundle for traceability.
