What Are Alloy Steel SSAW Pipes?
Alloy Steel SSAW Pipes are large-diameter pipes made by bending alloy steel coil into a spiral and welding the seam by the submerged arc process. SSAW stands for spiral submerged arc welded. You may also see it called HSAW, for helical submerged arc welded.
The coil is fed into the mill at an angle. The strip curls into a pipe, and the edges meet along a spiral line. Welding heads then lay a bead on the inside and the outside, under a blanket of flux, with filler metal added. Because the forming angle sets the diameter, one coil width can make many pipe sizes. That is why spiral pipe suits big diameters so well.
In practice, “alloy” here usually means micro-alloyed high-strength steel, with small additions of niobium, vanadium or titanium. Heat-resistant molybdenum steel such as 16Mo3 is also available.

Alloy Steel SSAW Pipes FAQs
Common questions about alloy steel SSAW pipe grades, dimensions, welding, testing, and supply.
Which grade of Alloy Steel SSAW Pipes should I choose for a gas pipeline?
Pick by design pressure and diameter. X52 and X60 suit moderate pressures, while X65 and X70 let you use thinner walls on high-pressure lines.
How do I choose between X65 and X70 pipe?
Compare wall thickness, weight and welding conditions. X70 is stronger, so the wall can be thinner, but it needs tighter welding control. Your design engineer should confirm the choice.
Can Alloy Steel SSAW Pipes be used for high-pressure service?
Yes, within the design code. Pipeline codes such as ASME B31.4 and B31.8 set wall and pressure limits, and your engineer applies them to the spiral seam as the code requires.
Does the spiral seam weaken the pipe?
No, when the weld is made and tested to the standard. The seam is tested by hydrostatic test and weld inspection, as the standard requires.
How do I weld Alloy Steel SSAW Pipes on site?
Use a filler metal matched to the grade, a low-hydrogen process and an approved welding procedure. Higher grades such as X70 need tighter control of heat input and preheat.
What tolerances apply to diameter and wall?
The pipe standard on your order sets them. Tell us the standard and grade at enquiry, and we quote against it.
What sizes can I order?
The chart above covers NPS 12 to 48 in 8, 12.7 and 16 mm walls. Other diameters and walls can be quoted on request.
How do I calculate the weight of an order?
Use Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02466, with OD and wall in mm. Multiply by length and number of pipes. Actual weight varies slightly with wall tolerance.
What affects the price of Alloy Steel SSAW Pipes?
Grade is the biggest factor, followed by diameter, wall thickness, quantity, weld inspection, third-party inspection and freight to your port.
Which certificates come with the pipes?
Each order carries an EN 10204 3.1 certificate showing chemistry and mechanical results. A 3.2 certificate and third-party inspection are available on request.
Is every pipe tested before it ships?
Pressure and weld tests follow the standard on your order. Tell us the tests you need when you send your enquiry.
Are you a manufacturer or a supplier of Alloy Steel SSAW Pipes?
We are both. We manufacture near Mumbai and supply ready stock of popular sizes from the same location, subject to availability.
Can I get chrome-moly grades in spiral pipe?
Chrome-moly grades are normally made as plate-based LSAW pipe under ASTM A691. For large-bore chrome-moly service, ask us about LSAW instead.
Do you export Alloy Steel SSAW Pipes, and how do they ship?
Yes. We export to 85+ countries from our Mumbai export office, and we pack the pipes to suit sea or air freight and your project needs.
