What Are Alloy Steel Boiler Tubes?

Alloy Steel Boiler Tubes are seamless or welded steel tubes made with alloying elements such as chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and vanadium to improve strength, heat resistance, oxidation resistance, and service life at elevated temperatures. They are used in boilers and thermal equipment where tubes must withstand high pressure, repeated heating, and demanding operating conditions.

Compared with ordinary carbon steel tubes, alloy steel grades offer better performance under prolonged exposure to high temperature and pressure. Grades such as ASTM A213 T11, T22, T91, T5, and T9, along with 16Mo3, are commonly selected according to the boiler design, operating temperature, pressure, and applicable standard.

As an Alloy Steel Boiler Tubes Manufacturer in India, we supply tubes in different grades, outside diameters, wall thicknesses, and lengths, with material testing and certification provided according to the required specification.

Types of Alloy Steel Boiler Tubes

Alloy steel boiler tubes are available in different grades, designs, and manufacturing conditions, depending on their application, operating temperature, and pressure. As an experienced Alloy Steel Boiler Tubes Manufacturer, we offer different tube types to meet the requirements of boilers, superheaters, reheaters, and other high-temperature applications.

  • Superheater tubes: T11, T22, T91 and T92, chosen by steam temperature.
  • Reheater tubes: the same grades, running at lower pressure but high heat.
  • Waterwall tubes: T11, T12, T22 or T23 in the furnace walls, where tubes meet radiant heat.
  • Low-alloy tubes (ASTM A209 T1): carbon-molybdenum steel for moderate-heat sections.
  • Creep-strength tubes (T91, T92, T23): advanced steels for supercritical and ultra-supercritical units.
  • EN-grade tubes (16Mo3, 13CrMo4-5, 10CrMo9-10): for boilers built to European codes.
  • Hot-finished tubes: heavier walls, common for superheaters and headers’ stubs.
  • Cold-drawn tubes: tighter size and a smoother surface for thinner walls.

What Is the Difference Between Alloy Steel Boiler Tubes and Carbon Steel Boiler Tubes?

The short answer: carbon steel boiler tubes (ASTM A192 and A210) suit lower-temperature parts such as economisers and low-pressure waterwalls. Alloy steel tubes keep their strength and resist oxidation at the high metal temperatures found in superheaters and reheaters. Carbon steel is generally kept below about 425°C of metal temperature, which is where alloy steel takes over.

Alloy Steel Boiler Tubes Size and Weight Chart

Boiler tubes are ordered by OD and wall. Weight follows the standard formula for carbon and low-alloy steel:

Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02466

OD and wall are in mm. Example: a 50.8 mm OD tube with a 4.0 mm wall weighs (50.8 − 4.0) × 4.0 × 0.02466 = 4.62 kg/m. All values below are in kg/m.

Wall (mm) 38.1 OD 44.5 OD 50.8 OD 57.15 OD 63.5 OD 76.2 OD
3.22.753.263.764.264.765.76
4.03.363.994.625.245.877.12
5.04.084.875.656.437.218.78
6.34.945.936.917.908.8910.86

T91 and T92 contain more chromium and tungsten, so real weight may differ slightly from the formula.

Available Sizes, Dimensions and Tolerances

Alloy Steel Boiler Tubes are ordered by OD, wall and length, and the OD range in the chart can be extended on request. Boiler designers usually specify the minimum wall, so the thinnest point meets the pressure calculation. For hot-finished tubes with an OD up to 101.6 mm, the OD may vary by +0.4 mm and −0.8 mm. Wall tolerance on tubes ordered by minimum wall depends on the thickness, as shown below.

Wall thickness (mm) Wall tolerance (hot-finished, OD up to 101.6 mm)
Up to 2.4+40% / −0
Over 2.4 to 3.8+35% / −0
Over 3.8 to 4.6+33% / −0
Over 4.6+28% / −0

Cold-drawn tubes carry tighter limits. Tell us your required OD and wall tolerance, and we will quote against it.

Alloy Steel Boiler Tubes FAQs

Common questions about alloy steel boiler tube grades, temperatures, testing, dimensions, and supply.

Which grade of Alloy Steel Boiler Tubes should I choose for a superheater?

Pick by steam temperature. T11 and T22 cover most subcritical units, while T91 and T92 suit supercritical and ultra-supercritical steam.

How do I choose between T22 and T91?

Look at metal temperature and design life. T91 has much higher creep strength, so it allows thinner walls at high heat. T22 costs less and works well at moderate temperatures.

When should I pick T23 for a waterwall?

Consider T23 when you want more strength than T22 and easier fabrication than 9Cr steels. Your boiler designer should confirm it against the design code.

Are alloy boiler tubes seamless or welded?

ASTM A213 covers seamless tubes only, and that is the form we supply for alloy boiler duty. Welded boiler tubes exist mainly in carbon steel.

Why do boiler designers specify minimum wall?

Minimum wall guarantees the thinnest point of the tube still meets the pressure calculation. An average-wall order allows a plus-minus variation around the nominal.

Is heat treatment needed after welding?

Usually yes. Chrome-moly steels need preheat and post-weld heat treatment, and T91, T92 and T23 need tighter control than T11 or T22. Follow an approved welding procedure.

What tolerances apply to OD and wall?

ASTM A1016 or A450 sets them, depending on the grade. The table above gives guide figures for hot-finished tubes.

What sizes can I order?

The chart above covers OD 38.1 to 76.2 mm in walls of 3.2 to 6.3 mm. Other sizes can be quoted on request.

How do I calculate the weight of a tube order?

Use Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02466, with OD and wall in mm. Multiply by length and quantity. Actual weight varies slightly with wall tolerance.

What affects the price of Alloy Steel Boiler Tubes?

Grade is the biggest factor, since chromium, molybdenum, tungsten and vanadium move the cost. OD, wall, finish, quantity, testing, inspection and freight also count.

Which certificates come with the tubes?

Each order carries an EN 10204 3.1 certificate showing chemistry and mechanical results. A 3.2 certificate and third-party inspection are available on request.

Is every tube tested before it ships?

ASTM A213 requires a hydrostatic test or a non-destructive electric test on each tube, with flattening and flaring tests on samples. Tell us your preferred test when you enquire.

Are you a manufacturer or a supplier of Alloy Steel Boiler Tubes?

We are both. We manufacture near Mumbai and supply ready stock of popular sizes from the same location, subject to availability.

Do you export Alloy Steel Boiler Tubes, and how are they packed?

Yes. We ship to 85+ countries from our Mumbai export office, and we pack the tubes to suit sea or air freight and your project needs.
