What Are Alloy Steel LSAW Pipes?
Alloy Steel LSAW Pipes are large-diameter pipes made from alloy steel plate, bent into a round shape and welded along one straight seam by the submerged arc process. LSAW stands for longitudinal submerged arc welded. The arc burns under a blanket of flux, and filler metal is added from both the inside and the outside of the seam.
The plate is formed by the JCO or UOE press method. After welding, the pipe is often cold expanded to hold its roundness and size. Because the pipe starts as plate, makers can pick the alloy and wall thickness freely. This is why LSAW suits large sizes and heavy walls that ERW machines cannot reach.

What Is the Difference Between Alloy Steel LSAW Pipes and Alloy Steel ERW Pipes?
The short answer: LSAW pipe is made from plate and welded with filler metal in the submerged arc process, while ERW pipe is made from coil and welded by electric resistance without filler. LSAW goes to larger diameters and much heavier walls. ERW is faster to make and cheaper in the smaller sizes. Seamless pipe is the third route, and it is usually chosen for small bores at the highest pressures.
| Point | Alloy Steel LSAW Pipes | Alloy Steel ERW Pipes |
|---|---|---|
| Starting material | Alloy steel plate | Alloy steel strip (coil) |
| Welding | Submerged arc, inside and outside, with filler | High-frequency resistance, no filler |
| Diameter range | Large bore | Small to medium bore |
| Wall thickness | Heavy walls available | Limited at the thick end |
| Chrome-moly grades | Available under ASTM A691 | Not covered by an ASTM chrome-moly ERW standard |
| Weld inspection | Radiography is an option | Seam tested by hydro or electric test |
| Cost and lead time | Higher, plate-dependent | Lower and faster |
| Best fit | Large steam, process and power lines | Smaller lines and mechanical tubing |

Alloy Steel LSAW Pipes Size and Weight Chart
Weight depends on outside diameter and wall thickness. For carbon and low-alloy steel, we use this formula:
OD and wall are in mm. Example: NPS 24 with a 19.05 mm wall gives (609.6 − 19.05) × 19.05 × 0.02466 = 277.42 kg/m. Multiply by pipe length for total weight. The chart uses common plate thicknesses of 12.7, 19.05 and 25.4 mm.
| NPS | OD (mm) | 12.7 mm wall (kg/m) | 19.05 mm wall (kg/m) | 25.4 mm wall (kg/m) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 16" | 406.4 | 123.30 | 181.97 | 238.64 |
| 20" | 508.0 | 155.12 | 229.70 | 302.28 |
| 24" | 609.6 | 186.94 | 277.42 | 365.92 |
| 30" | 762.0 | 234.67 | 349.02 | 461.38 |
| 36" | 914.4 | 282.40 | 420.61 | 556.84 |
| 42" | 1066.8 | 330.13 | 492.20 | 652.30 |
| 48" | 1219.2 | 377.85 | 563.80 | 747.75 |
Available Sizes, Dimensions and Schedules
Alloy Steel LSAW Pipes are ordered by OD and wall thickness. Because the pipe is rolled from plate, you can specify the exact wall in millimetres instead of choosing a fixed schedule. The chart above covers NPS 16 to 48, and other sizes can be quoted on request. If you prefer a standard schedule, the table shows the ASME B36.10M walls for common sizes.
| NPS | OD (mm) | Standard wall (mm) | Extra strong wall (mm) | Sch 40 wall (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 16" | 406.4 | 9.53 | 12.70 | 12.70 |
| 18" | 457.2 | 9.53 | 12.70 | 14.27 |
| 20" | 508.0 | 9.53 | 12.70 | 20.62 |
| 24" | 609.6 | 9.53 | 12.70 | 24.61 |
Wall thickness follows plate thickness, so the plate standard sets the allowed under-thickness. Your order form should give the OD, wall, length and any bevel detail.

Alloy Steel LSAW Pipes FAQs
Common questions about alloy steel LSAW pipe grades, plate standards, welding, dimensions, and supply.
Which grade of Alloy Steel LSAW Pipes should I choose for a steam line?
For most steam lines, pick A691 1¼CR or 2¼CR. Move to Grade 91 when the temperature and pressure are high enough that thinner walls save real weight and cost.
How do I choose between 5CR and 9CR pipe?
Start with the fluid and temperature. 5CR works well for sulphur-bearing refinery lines, and 9CR gives more oxidation resistance when the metal runs hotter.
Can Alloy Steel LSAW Pipes be used for high-pressure service?
Yes. ASTM A691 is written for high-pressure, high-temperature service. Your design code sets the allowable stress and any weld joint factor, so your designer should confirm the wall.
What does the weld class on an A691 pipe mean?
The class tells the maker which heat treatment and weld radiography to apply to the pipe. Give us your class requirement at enquiry so the quote matches the code.
How do I weld Alloy Steel LSAW Pipes on site?
Use a filler metal that matches the chrome-moly grade, preheat as your procedure requires, and apply post-weld heat treatment where the code asks for it. Grade 91 needs tighter control than the lower grades, so follow an approved procedure.
What tolerances apply to wall thickness?
The pipe wall comes from the plate thickness, and the plate standard limits how far below nominal it may fall. We quote against the standard named in your order.
What sizes can I order?
The chart above covers NPS 16 to 48 in plate walls of 12.7, 19.05 and 25.4 mm. Other sizes and walls can be quoted on request.
How do I calculate the weight of an order?
Use Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02466, with OD and wall in mm. Multiply by length and quantity for total weight, remembering that actual weight shifts a little with plate tolerance.
What affects the price of Alloy Steel LSAW Pipes?
Plate grade is the biggest factor, since chromium, molybdenum and vanadium move the cost. Wall thickness, diameter, heat treatment, weld radiography, third-party inspection, quantity and freight also count.
Which certificates come with the pipes?
Each order carries an EN 10204 3.1 certificate showing chemistry and mechanical results. A 3.2 certificate and third-party inspection are available on request.
Is every pipe tested before it ships?
Pressure and weld tests follow the ASTM or EN standard on your order, and you can name the test and class you need when you enquire.
Are you a manufacturer or a supplier of Alloy Steel LSAW Pipes?
We are both. We manufacture near Mumbai and supply ready stock of popular sizes, subject to availability.
Can I buy ERW pipe instead for a large-bore chrome-moly line?
Not for chrome-moly grades. ASTM A691 covers fusion-welded pipe, and LSAW is the usual route for large sizes. For smaller bores in other alloys, ERW is an option.
Do you export Alloy Steel LSAW Pipes, and how do they ship?
Yes. We export to 85+ countries from our Mumbai export office, and we pack the pipes to suit sea or air freight and your project needs.
