Material and Grades of API 5L X65 Carbon Steel Pipes
X65 belongs to the API 5L X series, above X60 and below X70. Mills reach 450 MPa through micro-alloying with niobium, vanadium and titanium, together with controlled rolling or quench and temper. This keeps carbon low, so the steel stays tough at low temperatures and weldable in the field.
PSL 1 follows the basic requirements. PSL 2 adds a lower carbon cap, tighter sulphur and phosphorus, a carbon equivalent limit, a ceiling on strength and mandatory Charpy testing. For X65, PSL 2 is delivered quenched and tempered (Q, seamless) or thermomechanically rolled (M, mainly welded), so tell us which your specification names.
Sour Service and Offshore Requirements for API 5L X65 Carbon Steel Pipes
X65 is a regular choice for sour gas and offshore lines, but the grade name alone does not make it suitable. These services are added to PSL 2 pipe through annexes of the standard, and each adds a suffix letter to the grade.
| Suffix and annex | Service | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| S, Annex H | Sour service (H₂S) | Chemistry and hardness limits, plus HIC testing to NACE TM0284 and SSC testing to NACE TM0177 |
| O, Annex J | Offshore | Enhanced Charpy toughness, stricter carbon equivalent limits and extra NDE |
| Annex G | Gas pipelines | Requirements for resisting ductile fracture propagation, through Charpy and DWTT |
| Annex B | Any critical line | A qualified manufacturing procedure verified before production |
An X65MS pipe, for example, is thermomechanically rolled, sour service pipe. An X65QO pipe is quenched and tempered offshore pipe. If your line carries H₂S or sits offshore, tell us the suffix, fluid conditions and design temperature at enquiry. We confirm the grade, process and testing for your project before quoting, and the certificate should show compliance with the annex.

API 5L X65 vs X60 vs X52 vs X70 Pipes: How Much Wall Does Each Grade Need?
The matrix shows the wall required for a design pressure of 100 bar at three common diameters, using t = P × D ÷ (2 × SMYS × F) with a design factor of 0.72 and no corrosion allowance.
| Pipe size | X52 (360 MPa) | X60 (415 MPa) | X65 (450 MPa) | X70 (485 MPa) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24" (609.6 mm) | 11.76 mm | 10.20 mm | 9.41 mm | 8.73 mm |
| 36" (914.4 mm) | 17.64 mm | 15.30 mm | 14.11 mm | 13.09 mm |
| 48" (1219.2 mm) | 23.52 mm | 20.40 mm | 18.81 mm | 17.46 mm |
Moving from X60 to X65 cuts the required wall by about 8%, and the saving grows in millimetres as diameter rises. A 48-inch line needs about 1.6 mm less wall in X65 than in X60. Whether that pays off depends on the extra price per tonne, the welding cost and your inspection regime, so compare installed cost, not just steel weight.
API 5L X65 Carbon Steel Pipes Size and Weight Chart
Weight per metre is (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02466, with dimensions in mm. Mill tolerances move the real weight slightly.
OD and wall are in mm. Multiply the result by the pipe length to obtain the total weight.
| NPS | OD (mm) | 14.27 mm wall kg/m | 17.48 mm wall kg/m | 22.23 mm wall kg/m |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24" | 609.6 | 209.50 | 255.24 | 321.99 |
| 30" | 762.0 | 263.12 | 320.93 | 405.54 |
| 36" | 914.4 | 316.75 | 386.62 | 489.08 |
| 42" | 1066.8 | 370.38 | 452.32 | 572.62 |
| 48" | 1219.2 | 424.01 | 518.01 | 656.17 |
Sizes, Dimensions and Tolerances of API 5L X65 Carbon Steel Pipes
Line pipe is ordered by outside diameter and wall in millimetres or inches, not by schedule. API 5L allows pipe body diameter to vary by ±0.75% from 60.3 mm up to 610 mm and by ±0.5% above that. Seamless pipe wall up to 25 mm is held to +15% and −12.5%.
For field welding, ends are normally beveled at 30 degrees (with a tolerance of +5 and −0 degrees), leaving a root face of about 1.6 mm (±0.8 mm) on walls above 3.2 mm. If your welding procedure needs a different bevel, land or compound profile, give us the drawing and we will prepare the ends to match.
Because heavy walls and tight design margins are common on X65 lines, state on the order whether the wall is a nominal or a minimum, and what length range you need (R1, R2 or fixed).
Welding API 5L X65 Carbon Steel Pipes
X65 welds well when the procedure is controlled, and most pipelines are joined under API 1104 or a project-specific code. Weld metal should match or slightly overmatch the pipe strength, so the joint does not become the weak point, while heat input and interpass temperature are kept within the qualified range.
Many contractors use mechanised gas metal arc welding for large-diameter lines, with cellulosic or low-hydrogen processes for tie-ins and repairs. The low carbon equivalent of PSL 2 pipe helps keep heat-affected zone hardness down. For sour service, weld hardness must also stay below the project limit, so weld procedure qualification should include hardness traverses.
Tell us your welding process and consumables at enquiry. It lets us check that the pipe chemistry and delivery condition suit your procedure.

Coating and Cathodic Protection for API 5L X65 Carbon Steel Pipes
Buried and subsea X65 needs a coating, almost always paired with cathodic protection. Fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE) suits moderate temperatures, and three-layer polyethylene (3LPE) gives extra mechanical protection in rocky or rough backfill. Offshore lines may add a concrete weight coating for stability. Tell us the coating system, thickness and cutback length, and we will help coordinate the work and confirm the plan with your inspector.

FAQs
Common questions about API 5L X65 carbon steel pipes, sour service, offshore use and welding.
How much stronger is X65 than X60?
X65 has a minimum yield of 450 MPa against 415 MPa for X60, which is about 8% higher. The tensile minimum rises from 520 MPa to 535 MPa.
Is X65 the same as L450?
Yes. X65 is the API name and L450 is the ISO 3183 name for the same strength class.
Does X65 have to be PSL 2?
PSL 1 exists for X65, but most gas, offshore and sour lines specify PSL 2. It adds mandatory Charpy testing, tighter chemistry and a cap on strength.
Can X65 be used for sour service?
Yes, if it is ordered and supplied to Annex H, with HIC and SSC testing and the required chemistry and hardness limits. Check that the certificate states compliance.
How is X65 welded in the field?
With a qualified procedure under API 1104 or a project code, using weld metal that matches or slightly overmatches the pipe. Mechanised processes are common on large diameters.
How do I calculate the weight of X65 pipe?
Use (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02466, with both values in mm, to get kg per metre. Multiply by length for total weight.
Which coating suits subsea or buried X65 pipe?
FBE and 3LPE are the common choices, with cathodic protection. Offshore lines may add concrete weight coating. The coating system should follow your project specification.
Which documents come with an order?
EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates are included. Inspection reports, Charpy, DWTT, HIC and SSC records and third-party certificates are available on request.
