What Are Stainless Steel 316 Electropolished Seamless Tubes?
Stainless steel 316 electropolished seamless tubes are seamless tubes made from 316 austenitic stainless steel that have been electropolished to give a smooth, clean, corrosion-resistant surface.
Two things make them work:
- The steel: 316 holds about 16% to 18% chromium, 10% to 14% nickel and 2% to 3% molybdenum. The molybdenum raises resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chlorides, with a pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) of about 24, against about 19 for 304.
- The finish: electropolishing dissolves a thin layer of metal in an acid bath under electric current. It removes peaks, burrs and embedded iron and leaves a chromium-rich surface film.
The tube itself is cold drawn from a pierced billet and solution annealed, so it has no weld seam and an even wall. Tubes can be electropolished on the outside (OD), the inside (ID) or both. The result is a surface with less area for bacteria and product residue to hold on to, and that cleans faster in clean-in-place (CIP) and sterilise-in-place (SIP) cycles.

What Is the Difference Between Stainless Steel 316 Electropolished Seamless Tubes and Mechanically Polished Seamless Tubes?
The short answer: electropolishing removes metal and levels the surface, while mechanical polishing grinds and smears it. The electropolished tube is smoother at the microscopic level, cleaner and more corrosion resistant. Choose electropolished tube for pharmaceutical, biotech and sanitary lines, and mechanically polished tube where appearance matters but cleanliness does not.
| Point | Electropolished 316 Tubes | Mechanically Polished 316 Tubes |
|---|---|---|
| How the surface is made | Anodic dissolution in acid under current | Abrasive grinding and buffing |
| Surface at microscopic level | Smooth, with peaks removed | Scratched, with smeared metal and grit |
| Surface roughness (Ra) | Lowered further than the starting finish | Depends on grit used |
| Embedded iron and particles | Removed | Can remain |
| Chromium-rich oxide layer | Yes, improved | Not improved |
| Corrosion resistance | Higher | Lower |
| Cleanability (CIP / SIP) | Excellent | Fair |
| Bore (ID) finish | Possible on long, small-bore tubes | Hard to reach on small bores |
| Cost | Higher | Lower |
| Typical use | Pharmaceutical, biotech, sanitary lines | Decorative and general lines |

Stainless Steel 316 Electropolished Seamless Tubes Size and Weight Chart
Weight depends on OD and wall thickness. 316 stainless steel has a density of about 7.98 g/cm³, so we use this formula:
OD and wall are in mm. Example: 1/2 in OD, 16 BWG (1.65 mm) is (12.70 − 1.65) × 1.65 × 0.02507 = 0.457 kg/m. Multiply by length for total weight. Electropolishing removes only a very thin layer, so the weight changes by a negligible amount.
| OD (in) | OD (mm) | 18 BWG, 1.24 mm (kg/m) | 16 BWG, 1.65 mm (kg/m) | 14 BWG, 2.11 mm (kg/m) | 12 BWG, 2.77 mm (kg/m) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Available Sizes, Dimensions and Tolerances
Stainless Steel 316 Electropolished Seamless Tubes are ordered by OD and wall thickness, with the wall given in BWG gauge or in mm. Instrumentation tube starts at 6.35 mm OD, and process tube runs up to 76.2 mm OD in common walls. Other ODs, metric walls and lengths can be quoted on request. A higher BWG number means a thinner wall.
| BWG | Wall (in) | Wall (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 12 | 0.109 | 2.77 |
| 14 | 0.083 | 2.11 |
| 16 | 0.065 | 1.65 |
| 18 | 0.049 | 1.24 |
| 20 | 0.035 | 0.89 |
Common OD and wall pairs for clean process tube are 1/2 in × 1.65 mm, 3/4 in × 1.65 mm, 1 in × 1.65 mm, 1-1/2 in × 1.65 mm, 2 in × 1.65 mm, 2-1/2 in × 1.65 mm and 3 in × 1.65 mm, with 2.11 mm on request for pressure or higher corrosion allowance. Tolerances on OD, wall and length follow ASTM A269 or A213 together with ASTM A1016, and electropolishing removes a thin surface layer, so quote the final dimensions you need.

Stainless Steel 316 Electropolished Seamless Tubes FAQs
Common questions about 316 grade selection, electropolishing, surface roughness, CIP/SIP, and supply.
Should I choose 316 or 316L for electropolished tubes?
Choose 316L for pharmaceutical, biotech and any line that is welded, because its low carbon avoids weld decay. Choose 316 for lines that are not welded on site, and 316Ti for higher-temperature chemical service.
What is the difference between 316L 1.4404 and 1.4435?
Grade 1.4435 has more nickel and a little more molybdenum, with tighter limits, so it holds a stable austenitic structure and resists corrosion slightly better. Many pharmaceutical and biotech projects specify it, so state the EN number your specification names.
What surface roughness can I specify?
Specify Ra as a maximum, for example 0.5, 0.38 or 0.25 µm. Lower figures need a smoother starting tube and a longer polish, so tell us the value your project calls for.
Should I order ID, OD or ID and OD electropolished tube?
Order ID-only polish when only the bore touches the product. Order ID and OD polish for the cleanest line, for exposed runs and for cleanrooms.
Can electropolished tubes handle CIP and SIP cycles?
Yes. The smooth surface cleans fast and resists the hot caustic, acid and steam used in cleaning and sterilising. Check the cleaning chemicals, chloride level and temperature against your design basis.
Does electropolishing change the tube size?
It removes a very thin surface layer, normally a few micrometres to tens of micrometres. That has little effect on OD and wall, but quote the final dimensions you need if the tolerance is tight.
How should I weld electropolished tubes?
Use orbital TIG welding with an argon purge on the inside, which gives clean, smooth joints. Remove heat tint on the weld and passivate it after welding to restore the finish.
What sizes and tolerances apply?
The tables above cover OD 6.35 to 76.2 mm in common walls. Tolerances follow ASTM A269 or A213 and ASTM A1016. Other sizes and walls can be quoted on request, and popular sizes sit in ready stock, subject to availability.
How do I calculate the weight of an order?
Use Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02507, with OD and wall in mm. Multiply by length and quantity. Real weight varies slightly with wall tolerance.
Which certificates and tests come with the tubes?
Each order carries an EN 10204 3.1 certificate showing chemistry and mechanical results. A 3.2 certificate, third-party inspection, Ra measurement, bore inspection and a ferroxyl test are available on request.
