Every order includes an EN 10204 Type 3.1 certificate, while popular sizes may be available from ready stock, subject to availability.

What Are Stainless Steel 304 Electropolished Seamless Tubes?

Stainless steel 304 electropolished seamless tubes are seamless tubes made from 304 austenitic stainless steel and then electropolished, an electrochemical finishing process that smooths and brightens the metal surface. The tube is first cold drawn from a pierced billet and solution annealed, so it has no weld seam and an even wall. It is then made the anode in a bath of acid electrolyte, normally a mix of phosphoric and sulphuric acid, and a controlled current dissolves a thin layer of metal from the surface. The process works hardest on the high points, so it levels the surface, rounds off micro-burrs and removes embedded iron, scale and smeared metal. What remains is a bright, smooth surface covered with a chromium-rich oxide layer.

Electropolishing differs from mechanical polishing in a simple way. Mechanical polishing drags and smears metal across the surface and can leave grit and fine scratches. Electropolishing removes metal instead, so the surface is cleaner and has no directional marks. Tubes can be electropolished on the outside (OD), the inside (ID) or both.

What Is the Difference Between Stainless Steel 304 Electropolished Seamless Tubes and Stainless Steel 316L Electropolished Seamless Tubes?

The short answer: 316L adds molybdenum, which gives it better resistance to chlorides and pitting, while 304 costs less and suits clean service without strong chloride. Use 304 for food, dairy, beverage and clean water, and 316L for pharmaceutical, biotech and chloride-bearing lines.

Stainless Steel 304 Electropolished Seamless Tubes Size and Weight Chart

Weight depends on OD and wall thickness. 304 stainless steel has a density of about 7.93 g/cm³, so we use this formula:

Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02491

OD and wall are in mm. Example: 1 in OD, 16 BWG (1.65 mm) is (25.40 − 1.65) × 1.65 × 0.02491 = 0.976 kg/m. Multiply by length for total weight. Electropolishing removes only a very thin layer, so the weight changes by a negligible amount.

Available Sizes, Dimensions and Tolerances

Stainless Steel 304 Electropolished Seamless Tubes are ordered by OD and wall thickness, with the wall given in BWG gauge or in mm. Small-bore instrumentation tube starts at 6.35 mm OD, and process tube runs up to 76.2 mm OD in common walls. Other ODs, metric walls and lengths can be quoted on request. A higher BWG number means a thinner wall.

OD (in) OD (mm) Walls commonly ordered (mm)

3/8"9.530.89, 1.24, 1.65

2"50.801.65, 2.11
2-1/2"63.501.65, 2.11
3"76.201.65, 2.11

Tolerances on OD, wall and length follow ASTM A269 or A213 together with ASTM A1016. Tell us if your drawing calls for closer limits. Electropolishing removes a thin surface layer, so quote the final dimensions you need.

Common Materials in Stainless Steel 304 Electropolished Seamless Tubes

We manufacture and supply Stainless Steel 304 Electropolished Seamless Tubes in commonly specified grades to suit different welding requirements, operating temperatures, and cleanliness standards.

304 (S30400, 1.4301): The standard 304 stainless steel grade, containing approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel. It is widely used in food processing, dairy, and beverage applications.

304L (S30403, 1.4307): A low-carbon grade suitable for welded piping systems, offering improved resistance to weld decay.

304H (S30409, 1.4948): A higher-carbon grade designed for applications requiring greater strength at elevated temperatures.

Dual-Certified 304/304L: Combines the requirements of both grades in one tube, making it a common choice for clean process lines.

As Stainless Steel 304 Electropolished Seamless Tubes Suppliers, we offer these grades in various diameters, wall thicknesses, lengths, and electropolished finishes to meet specific project requirements.

Stainless Steel 304 Electropolished Seamless Tubes FAQs

Common questions about 304 grade selection, electropolishing, surface roughness, dimensions, and testing.

Should I choose 304, 304L or 316L for electropolished tubes?

Choose 304L for welded clean process lines, because its low carbon avoids weld decay. Choose 304 for food, dairy and beverage lines that are not welded on site, and 316L for pharmaceutical, biotech or chloride-bearing service.

How does electropolishing differ from mechanical polishing?

Electropolishing dissolves a thin layer of metal and levels the surface, while mechanical polishing drags metal across the surface and can leave scratches and embedded grit. The electropolished surface is smoother, cleaner and easier to sanitise.

What surface roughness can I specify?

Specify Ra as a maximum, for example 0.5, 0.38 or 0.25 µm. Lower figures need a smoother starting tube and a longer polish, so tell us the value your project calls for.

Should I order ID, OD or ID and OD electropolished tube?

Order ID-only polish when only the bore touches the product. Order ID and OD polish for the cleanest line, for exposed runs and for cleanrooms. OD-only polish suits visible and architectural use.

Does electropolishing change the tube size?

It removes a very thin surface layer, normally a few micrometres to tens of micrometres. That has little effect on OD and wall, but quote the final dimensions you need if the tolerance is tight.

What sizes and tolerances apply?

The tables above cover OD 6.35 to 76.2 mm in common walls. Tolerances follow ASTM A269 or A213 and ASTM A1016. Other sizes and walls can be quoted on request, and popular sizes sit in ready stock, subject to availability.

How do I calculate the weight of an order?

Use Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02491, with OD and wall in mm. Multiply by length and quantity. Real weight varies slightly with wall tolerance.

Which certificates and tests come with the tubes?

Each order carries an EN 10204 3.1 certificate showing chemistry and mechanical results. A 3.2 certificate, third-party inspection, Ra measurement, bore inspection and a ferroxyl test are available on request.
