What Are Stainless Steel 316 Pipes and Tubes?

Stainless Steel 316 Pipes and Tubes are hollow products made from an austenitic stainless steel alloy containing chromium, nickel and molybdenum. The addition of molybdenum improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in chloride-containing environments such as seawater and coastal conditions.

SS 316 pipes carry liquids, gases and chemicals through industrial systems, while tubes are commonly used in heat exchangers, instrumentation and equipment requiring precise dimensions. Compared with SS 304, grade 316 generally performs better in environments exposed to salts and many corrosive chemicals.

These products are widely used in marine engineering, chemical processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, food processing and water treatment plants. Available in seamless and welded forms, Stainless Steel 316 Pipes and Tubes come in different diameters, wall thicknesses and lengths to meet specific operating and project requirements.

Why Choose Stainless Steel 316 Pipes and Tubes?

Stainless Steel 316 Pipes and Tubes are a practical choice for industries where exposure to salt, moisture and chemicals can cause corrosion. The addition of molybdenum gives SS 316 better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion than SS 304 in many chloride-containing environments. This helps the material perform reliably in marine, chemical processing and water treatment applications.

Key reasons to choose SS 316 include:

  • Better Corrosion Resistance: Handles many corrosive environments, including those containing chlorides.
  • High Durability: Offers dependable performance in demanding industrial conditions.
  • Good Heat Resistance: Maintains useful properties across a range of operating temperatures.
  • Easy Fabrication: Supports common forming, machining and welding processes.
  • Low Maintenance: Helps reduce corrosion-related repairs when properly selected and maintained.
  • Wide Industrial Use: Suitable for chemical plants, pharmaceutical equipment, marine systems and food processing.

Choosing the right SS 316 product depends on the operating environment, temperature, pressure and required dimensions.

Material and Grades of Stainless Steel 316 Pipes and Tubes

The base grade is 316, and it comes in a few useful variants. We supply each one in pipe and tube form.

316: The standard molybdenum grade, with carbon up to 0.08%. It suits most chemical, marine and food applications.

316L: Low carbon, up to 0.03%. It is the preferred pick for heavily welded systems because it avoids weld decay.

316H: Higher carbon, between 0.04% and 0.10%, for better strength in hot service.

316Ti: Stabilised with titanium for long exposure to heat in the 450–850°C range.

316LN: Low carbon with added nitrogen, used when higher strength is needed alongside weldability.

Dual-certified 316/316L is also available and meets both chemistry limits in one pipe. All grades are supplied in the solution annealed condition.

Stainless Steel 316 vs 316L Pipes and Tubes: What Is the Difference?

316 and 316L share the same chromium, nickel and molybdenum. The difference lies in carbon, and that one number changes how each behaves after welding and under load.

Point 316 316L
Carbon0.08% max0.03% max
Minimum yield strength205 MPa170 MPa
Minimum tensile strength515 MPa485 MPa
Behaviour after weldingCan sensitise in thick sectionsResists weld decay
Best forHigher strength, hot serviceHeavy welding, corrosive fluids

If your pipe will be welded on site and never heat treated, 316L is the safer choice. If strength at temperature matters more, go with 316 or 316H. For simple water, food or air lines with no chlorides, 304 can be enough and costs less.

FAQs

Common questions about SS 316 pipes and tubes, grade selection, standards, finishes and testing.

Why is 316 better than 304 near the sea?

316 contains molybdenum, which helps the surface resist pitting from chloride in salt air and spray. 304 lacks it and can show rust spots sooner.

When should I pick 316L instead of 316?

Pick 316L for heavily welded systems that will not be heat treated afterward. The lower carbon prevents weld decay.

Which standard should I specify for 316 pipes?

Use ASTM A312 for pipe. Use A213 or A249 for exchanger tubes, and A269 for general tubing.

How do I calculate the weight of 316 pipe?

Use (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02507, with both values in mm, to get kg per metre. Multiply by length for total weight.

How is 316 different from 316Ti?

316Ti has titanium added to protect against carbide formation during long heat exposure. It is chosen for hot service, while 316 suits ordinary corrosion duty.

Can you supply polished 316 tubes for hygienic use?

Yes. We offer bright annealed, No. 4 and mirror finishes for sanitary and pharma applications.

Do you make custom sizes and lengths?

Yes. Special OD and wall combinations, cut lengths and bends are made to your drawing.

Which certificates come with the order?

We supply EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates. Third-party inspection reports are available when the purchase order asks for them.

Which tests can I request before shipment?

Chemical analysis, mechanical tests and hydrotest or eddy current are standard. PMI, IGC, ultrasonic and radiography can be added on request.

Can 316 handle hot service?

It is used up to around 800°C depending on pressure and medium. For long exposure to heat, 316H or 316Ti is usually a better choice.
