We serve industries requiring dependable stainless steel products for furnaces, heating equipment, thermal processing systems and other high-temperature applications.
What Are Stainless Steel 309 Pipes & Tubes?
Stainless Steel 309 Pipes & Tubes are hollow steel products made from SS 309, a heat-resistant stainless steel grade containing approximately 22–24% chromium and 12–15% nickel. These alloying elements help the steel resist oxidation and retain its strength when exposed to high temperatures.
The pipes are mainly used to carry hot gases or fluids, while the tubes are used in equipment such as heat exchangers, furnace assemblies and industrial heating systems. SS 309 is particularly suitable for applications where materials face continuous heat, hot air or repeated heating and cooling.
Available in seamless and welded forms, Stainless Steel 309 Pipes & Tubes are used in furnaces, kilns, heat-treatment plants, boilers and thermal processing equipment. The grade is selected primarily for its high-temperature performance rather than for severe corrosion resistance in every chemical environment.

Stainless Steel 309 Pipes and Tubes
High-quality Stainless Steel 309 Pipes and Tubes manufactured for demanding applications across chemical, petrochemical, power generation, heat treatment, furnace and engineering industries. Available in seamless, ERW and EFW forms with various sizes, wall thicknesses and manufacturing specifications.
Why Choose Stainless Steel 309 Pipes & Tubes?
Stainless Steel 309 Pipes & Tubes are a reliable choice for industrial equipment exposed to high temperatures, hot gases and repeated heating cycles. Their high chromium and nickel content helps resist oxidation and surface scaling, making them suitable for furnaces, kilns and heat-treatment systems.
- High-Temperature Resistance: Performs well in demanding environments exposed to intense heat.
- Oxidation Resistance: Helps protect the steel surface from scaling at elevated temperatures.
- Good High-Temperature Strength: Maintains useful mechanical strength under suitable operating conditions.
- Long Service Life: Resists heat-related deterioration, helping reduce frequent replacement.
- Good Fabrication Properties: Can be formed and welded using suitable procedures.
- Multiple Grade Options: SS 309, 309S and 309H offer options for different welding and high-temperature requirements.
These properties make SS 309 Pipes & Tubes suitable for furnace equipment, industrial heating systems, thermal processing plants and hot gas handling applications.

Material and Grades of Stainless Steel 309 Pipes & Tubes
309S is the low-carbon version and the one most buyers ask for. Its carbon cap of 0.08% keeps welded joints clean and reduces the risk of carbide trouble near the seam. 309H allows carbon in the 0.04–0.10% range, which lifts creep strength for long, hot service. 309Cb and 309HCb add niobium to tie up carbon for extra stability.
All grades are supplied solution annealed. One caution applies to every variant of the grade. Holding 309 between about 650°C and 900°C for very long periods can form sigma phase, which makes the steel brittle once it cools. We advise designers to consider this when equipment sits in that range for years.
Stainless Steel 309 vs 310S Pipes & Tubes: Key Differences
| Point | 309 / 309S | 310S |
|---|---|---|
| Chromium | 22.0–24.0% | 24.0–26.0% |
| Nickel | 12.0–15.0% | 19.0–22.0% |

| Price level | Lower | Higher |
| Typical choice | Furnace parts, flue lines, mixed-metal joints | Extreme heat, carburising and cyclic duty |
Choose 309 when temperatures stay near or below 1000°C and cost matters. Step up to 310S when heat, thermal shock or carburising atmosphere pushes beyond that.

Stainless Steel 309 Pipes & Tubes Sizes, Dimensions and Schedules
Thin-wall schedules are popular for 309 because the steel is expensive per kilo and many hot lines carry low pressure. The thinner 5S and 10S walls cut weight, while heavier schedules cover pressure and mechanical load. The table links each size to its DN equivalent.
| NPS | DN | OD (mm) | Sch 5S (mm) | Sch 10S (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ¾" | 20 | 26.7 | 1.65 | 2.11 |
| 1¼" | 32 | 42.2 | 1.65 | 2.77 |
| 2" | 50 | 60.3 | 1.65 | 2.77 |

| 10" | 250 | 273.1 | 3.40 | 4.19 |
| 12" | 300 | 323.9 | 3.96 | 4.57 |
Tubes can be ordered by OD and wall in mm, inches or BWG. Custom diameters, cut-to-length pieces and special end work are made to drawing.

FAQs
Common questions about SS 309 pipes and tubes, temperature limits, welding, testing and supply.
Which temperature range suits SS 309 pipes?
Up to about 1000°C in oxidising air. Beyond that, or in carburising and sulphur-rich gas, 310S or a nickel alloy is the safer choice.
Can 309 pipe be welded to carbon steel?
Yes. 309 is widely used for joining stainless to carbon or low-alloy steel, with 309L filler commonly used on the weld.
Is 309 better than 304 for heat?
Yes. 304 starts scaling at much lower temperatures, while 309's higher chromium and nickel hold the oxide layer to roughly 1000°C.
Does 309 stainless steel resist sigma phase?
Not entirely. Very long exposure between about 650°C and 900°C can form sigma phase and reduce toughness at room temperature.
Which standard applies to 309 heat exchanger tubes?
ASTM A213 covers seamless tubes and A249 covers welded ones, in grades such as TP309S and TP309H.
How do I calculate the weight of a 309 pipe?
Use (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02491 with both dimensions in mm to get kg per metre. Multiply by length for total weight.
Is 309 magnetic?
In the annealed state it is essentially non-magnetic. Cold work or welding can add slight magnetism.
Can you supply custom sizes and lengths?
Yes. Non-standard OD and wall combinations, cut lengths, bends, and special ends are made to your drawing.
Which certificates come with the order?
We supply EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates, and third-party inspection reports when the purchase order asks for them.
Which tests can be added before dispatch?
Hydrostatic or eddy current testing, PMI, ultrasonic examination and IGC testing can be added on request, alongside the standard chemical and mechanical tests.
How are the pipes and tubes packed for shipment?
Pipes are capped and bundled in waterproof wrapping, then
