What Are ASTM A335 P92 Alloy Steel Pipes?
ASTM A335 P92 Alloy Steel Pipes are seamless steel pipes made to handle very high temperatures and pressure. Manufacturers make these pipes using a special alloy containing chromium, molybdenum, tungsten and other elements that help the steel stay strong when exposed to extreme heat. P92 pipes are designed for demanding industrial conditions where ordinary steel pipes may not perform well.
These pipes are mainly used in thermal power plants, steam pipelines, boilers and other systems that operate at high temperatures for long periods. Their high strength and resistance to gradual weakening from heat and pressure make them a suitable choice for modern power generation plants that need reliable performance and long service life.

ASTM A335 P92 Alloy Steel Pipes Material and Grades
P92 is a chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy steel developed for demanding high-temperature applications. Its carefully controlled chemical composition helps maintain strength and resist gradual deformation under prolonged heat and pressure. The addition of tungsten distinguishes P92 from P91 and contributes to its high-temperature creep resistance.
| Element | Typical composition (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 0.07–0.13 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 8.50–9.50 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 0.30–0.60 |
| Tungsten (W) | 1.50–2.00 |
| Vanadium (V) | 0.15–0.25 |
| Niobium (Nb) | 0.04–0.09 |
| Nitrogen (N) | 0.03–0.07 |
| Boron (B) | 0.001–0.006 |
The exact chemical composition and testing requirements should be verified against the applicable ASTM A335 specification and purchase order. We can review your project requirements to help supply the appropriate grade with the required material documentation.

For most hot, high-pressure lines P91 is a proven and widely stocked choice. P92 earns its place where the design is pushed to the upper end of temperature and pressure and a thinner wall saves weight, cost and thermal stress.
Elevated Temperature and Corrosion Performance of ASTM A335 P92 Alloy Steel Pipes
P92 is a creep-strength-enhanced ferritic steel. Fine particles of vanadium and niobium carbonitrides, plus tungsten in solution, hold the structure together while the pipe sits under pressure at roughly 600–650 °C. It is built for ultra-supercritical steam, where lower grades need far thicker walls.
Because it is a ferritic steel, it expands less and conducts heat better than austenitic stainless steel. Combined with its thinner wall, this lowers thermal stress during starts and stops, which helps plants that cycle often.
Its 9% chromium gives good resistance to oxidation and steam scaling.
Fabrication needs discipline. Preheat of about 200–250 °C and post-weld heat treatment of about 740–780 °C are typical, with hardness checked afterwards and the temperature kept below the lower critical point. If a weld is under-tempered or overheated, the pipe loses strength. Cracking in the fine-grained zone beside the weld, known as Type IV cracking, is a known risk, and procedure control is the best defence. Follow your welding procedure specification and code.
P92 is not a corrosion-resistant stainless steel. It will rust in damp air, so keep the pipe coated until installation, and use stainless or duplex where corrosion matters more than heat.
ASTM A335 P92 Alloy Steel Pipes Size and Weight Chart
Weight per metre = (OD − wall) × wall × 0.02466, with OD and wall in mm. Use the result as an estimate, because the wall tolerance moves the actual weight.
OD and wall are in mm. Multiply the result by the pipe length to obtain the total weight.
| NPS | OD (mm) | Sch 100 Wall | Sch 100 kg/m | Sch 140 Wall | Sch 140 kg/m |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10" | 273.1 | 18.26 mm | 114.75 | 25.40 mm | 155.15 |
| 12" | 323.9 | 21.44 mm | 159.92 | 28.58 mm | 208.14 |
| 14" | 355.6 | 23.83 mm | 194.96 | 31.75 mm | 253.56 |
| 16" | 406.4 | 26.19 mm | 245.55 | 36.53 mm | 333.19 |
P92 steam lines tend to be heavy-wall, so these schedules reflect typical use. A full chart for any other size or wall can be sent on request.
ASTM A335 P92 Alloy Steel Pipes Sizes, Dimensions and Schedules
P92 pipe is available from ½" to 24" NB. Because the grade is strong, you can often choose a thinner wall than P91 or P22 would need for the same duty, so run the wall calculation to your code before you order. For very high-pressure headers and large steam pipes, heavier schedules and custom thick walls are available.
Non-standard OD and wall combinations can be made to your drawing. Pipes come in single random, double random or cut lengths, with plain or beveled ends. A varnish or paint coat is applied before dispatch, which keeps rust off pipes in transport and in the yard.
