What Are Carbon Steel Welded Tubes?
Carbon steel welded tubes are hollow tubes made from flat carbon steel strip that the mill rolls into a round and welds along the seam. The mill slits a coil to the exact strip width, curls it through forming rolls, and heats the two edges with high-frequency current. Rollers squeeze the hot edges together, and they fuse without any filler metal. A cutter then trims the weld bead from the outside, and for many tubes, from the inside as well. Heat treatment of the seam follows, sizing rolls bring the tube to size, and a probe scans the weld along its whole length before the tube is cut.
Because the strip comes from a rolling mill with a very even thickness, welded tubes hold a very consistent wall. Because the process runs continuously, the mill can make long lengths with little scrap. The result is a tube that costs far less than a seamless one, which is why Indian buyers also call these tubes MS tubes, ERW tubes, or CRC tubes when the steel is cold rolled.

This allows us to support both regular supply requirements and project-specific orders.
What Is the Difference Between As-Welded and Cold Drawn Welded Carbon Steel Tubes?
Both start as a welded tube, but cold drawn welded tubes get one more step. The mill pulls the welded tube through a die, over a mandrel inside, at room temperature. That pull compresses the weld, removes the inside bead, tightens the outside diameter and wall, and raises the strength. As-welded tubes skip this step, so they cost less and suit jobs where an exact bore does not matter.
Choose as-welded tubes for frames, supports, low-pressure lines, and general fabrication. Choose cold drawn welded tubes for cylinders, bearings, hydraulic parts, and any job that needs a smooth bore and tight size.
| Point | As-Welded Tubes | Cold Drawn Welded (DOM) Tubes |
|---|---|---|
| Final Sizing | Sizing rolls after welding | Drawn through a die over a mandrel |
| OD and Wall Tolerance | Standard | Tight |
| Inside Weld Bead | Trimmed or left | Removed and compressed |
| Surface | Smooth, matt | Very smooth, clean, often bright |
| Strength | Standard for the grade | Higher, adjustable by heat treatment |

Rectangular tube weight uses Weight (kg/m) = 0.00785 × 2 × Wall × (Side A + Side B − 2 × Wall), with values in mm. The result ignores corner radii, so real weights run slightly lower.
Available Sizes, Dimensions and Tolerances
We supply carbon steel welded tubes from 1/4" to 6" OD, in walls from 22 BWG (0.71 mm) to 6.35 mm, and in square and rectangular sections from 20 × 20 mm to 100 × 100 mm. Tubes do not use schedule numbers. You give the outside diameter and the wall thickness, and the standard sets how far each can vary. BWG is the gauge number for wall thickness, and a lower BWG means a thicker wall. Cold drawn welded tubes hold a much smaller size variation than as-welded tubes, so ask for the tolerance class when it matters to your fit.
Standard lengths are 6 m, 9 m, and 12 m, plus random lengths and exact cut lengths. As a carbon steel welded tubes supplier in India, we hold the common sizes in stock, subject to availability.
| Product | Available Sizes | Wall Thickness | Standard Lengths |
|---|---|---|---|
| ERW Round Tubes | 1/4" to 6" OD | 22 BWG to 6.35 mm | 6 m / 9 m / 12 m / exact cut |
| Cold Drawn Welded (DOM) Tubes | 6 mm to 76 mm OD | 1.0 mm to 5 mm | 6 m / exact cut |
| Boiler and Heat Exchanger Tubes | 1/2" to 4" OD | 16 BWG to 10 BWG | 6 m / 9 m / 12 m / exact cut |
| Square and Rectangular Tubes | 20 × 20 mm to 100 × 100 mm | 1.5 mm to 5 mm | 6 m / 12 m / custom |
| U-Bend Tubes | 1/2" to 2" OD | 16 BWG to 10 BWG | Made to drawing |
Common Materials Used in Carbon Steel Welded Tubes
Carbon steel welded tubes use low- and medium-carbon steel strips, with different grades available for boiler, heat exchanger, mechanical, structural, and precision applications. The material selection depends on the required strength, temperature, pressure, and service conditions.
ASTM A178: Grades A, C, and D are used for boiler and superheater tubes.

Carbon Steel Welded Tubes FAQs
Common questions about carbon steel welded tube grades, sizes, standards, testing, and supply.
Are carbon steel welded tubes strong enough for pressure service?
Yes, within their design limits. ASTM A178 and A214 welded tubes serve low-pressure boilers, condensers, and heat exchangers. Design codes apply a weld joint factor, so very high-pressure and high-temperature duty usually goes to seamless tubes.
Which grade should I choose for a condenser or heat exchanger?
ASTM A214 is the standard welded grade for condensers and heat exchangers. For boilers and air heaters, choose ASTM A178.
What is the difference between ERW tubes and cold drawn welded tubes?
ERW tubes leave the weld line after sizing. Cold drawn welded tubes get a further pull over a mandrel, which removes the inside bead and tightens the size.
Do welded tubes have a weld bead inside?
The mill trims the outside bead on every tube. For as-welded tubes, the inside bead can be trimmed or left, depending on the standard, and cold drawn welded tubes carry no inside bead.
Can I bend and flare carbon steel welded tubes?
Yes. Low carbon welded tubes bend, flare, and flatten well, and we pass flaring and flattening tests on the lot. We also bend tubes into U-shapes to your radius.
Can welded tubes work in hydraulic systems?
They work in low-pressure hydraulic and pneumatic lines and as cylinder barrels. Cold drawn welded tubes to EN 10305-2 suit these jobs, and very high-pressure lines usually take seamless tubes.
Do carbon steel welded tubes rust?
Yes, carbon steel rusts in air and water. We supply tubes oiled, phosphated, varnished, or galvanized, and we cap the ends for storage and transit.
What sizes do your carbon steel welded tubes come in?
We supply round tubes from 1/4" to 6" OD, in walls from 22 BWG to 6.35 mm, plus square and rectangular tubes from 20 × 20 mm to 100 × 100 mm. Other sizes are available on request.
What decides the price of carbon steel welded tubes?
Coil price, grade, size, wall thickness, condition, tolerance class, quantity, and delivery port all shape the price. Send us your enquiry for a current quote.
Which certificate comes with the tubes?
Every order ships with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate. We issue 3.2 with third-party inspection on request.
Are you a carbon steel welded tubes manufacturer or a supplier?
Both. We manufacture the tubes and also work as a carbon steel welded tubes supplier in India, with ready
