What Is the Difference Between Carbon Steel SSAW Pipes and Carbon Steel ERW Pipes?

Both pipes start as coil, but they differ in the weld, the size, and the job. ERW pipes carry one straight seam made by high-frequency current with no filler, and they stop near 24 inches. SSAW pipes carry a long spiral seam made by submerged arc welding with filler wire, and they reach 48 inches and beyond. The spiral also lays the weld at an angle to the main hoop stress, so the seam takes less direct load than a straight one.

Choose ERW for small and medium lines, building services, and general fabrication. Choose SSAW for big water mains, gas gathering lines, piling, and any line larger than ERW mills roll.
