Material and Grades of API 5L X52 Carbon Steel Pipes
X52 belongs to the family of API 5L X grades, running from X42 up through X46, X52, X56, X60, X65, X70 and beyond. Each number is the minimum yield strength in thousands of psi. X52 is the grade most buyers choose when Grade B is too weak and X60 is more than they need.
PSL 1 pipe follows the basic requirements. PSL 2 adds a lower carbon cap, lower sulphur and phosphorus, a carbon equivalent limit, a ceiling on strength and mandatory Charpy impact testing. The delivery condition then shapes the steel's properties:
| Suffix | Delivery condition | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| R | As-rolled | Rolled and left as is, the basic condition |
| N | Normalised | Heated and cooled in air to refine the grain |
| Q | Quenched and tempered | Hardened and tempered for higher strength and toughness |
| M | Thermomechanically rolled | Controlled rolling and cooling for strength with low carbon |
Tell us which suffix your specification calls for, and whether the line will handle sour fluids. Sour service needs extra chemistry and testing limits, which we confirm against your requirements at enquiry.

Design Pressure of API 5L X52 Carbon Steel Pipes by Class Location
Gas pipelines under ASME B31.8 use a design factor that gets stricter as population density rises. The table applies P = 2 × SMYS × t × F ÷ D to a 24-inch (609.6 mm) pipe, with SMYS of 360 MPa and temperature and joint factors taken as 1.0. It uses the nominal wall and no corrosion allowance.
P is design pressure, SMYS is specified minimum yield strength, t is nominal wall thickness, F is design factor and D is outside diameter. These values are for orientation only. The final design pressure, wall and test pressure must come from your pipeline designer under the governing code.
| Class location | Design factor F | Pressure, 9.53 mm wall (bar) | Pressure, 12.70 mm wall (bar) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Class 1, Division 1 | 0.80 | 90 | 120 |

API 5L X52 Carbon Steel Pipes Sizes, Dimensions and Tolerances
Line pipe is ordered by outside diameter and wall in millimetres or inches, not by schedule. For small sizes we also quote against ASME B36.10M schedules, so a 6-inch Sch 80 order is no problem.
API 5L allows pipe body diameter to vary by ±0.4 mm up to 60.3 mm OD, ±0.75% from 60.3 mm up to 610 mm, and ±0.5% above that. Wall tolerance on seamless pipe up to 25 mm is +15% and −12.5%, and welded pipe between 5 mm and 15 mm is held to ±10%. Because these limits are real, a wall specified as a minimum, not a nominal, can change the thickness you order, so confirm which one your design uses.
Pipe arrives in random lengths of about 4.9 to 7.6 m (R1) or 10.7 to 13.7 m (R2), or cut to a fixed length. Ends are plain or beveled at the angle your welding procedure requires.
How Much Steel Do API 5L X52 Carbon Steel Pipes Save in Pipeline Design?
Pipeline wall thickness follows a simple rule: the higher the pipe's yield strength, the thinner the wall can be for the same pressure. The table works it out for a 24-inch line at 80 bar, using the hoop stress formula t = P × D ÷ (2 × SMYS × F) with a design factor F of 0.72.
| Grade | Minimum yield | Wall needed | Weight (kg/m) | Steel per km |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grade B | 245 MPa | 13.82 mm | 203.07 | 203 t |
| X42 | 290 MPa | 11.68 mm | 172.19 | 172 t |
| X52 | 360 MPa | 9.41 mm | 139.23 | 139 t |
Against Grade B, X52 saves about 31% of the steel, or roughly 64 tonnes per kilometre. Against X42, it saves about 19%. Less steel also means lower freight, lighter handling and fewer weld-metal passes. These figures ignore corrosion allowance, so add your own on top before you finalise a wall.
Testing and Inspection of API 5L X52 Carbon Steel Pipes
| Test | What it proves for X52 |
|---|---|
| Hydrostatic test | Every length holds the test pressure with no leak |
| Tensile test | Yield and tensile strength meet 360 MPa and 460 MPa minimums |
| Flattening and guided bend | The pipe and its weld bend without cracking |
| Chemical analysis | Carbon, manganese, sulphur, phosphorus and micro-alloys sit inside PSL limits |
| Charpy impact (PSL 2) | The steel stays tough at 0°C |
| Weld seam NDT (welded PSL 2) | The seam has no hidden defects |
| Dimensional and visual checks | Diameter, wall, straightness and surface meet the standard |
| Third-party inspection | Independent witnessing to your inspection and test plan, on request |
Corrosion Protection and Coatings for API 5L X52 Carbon Steel Pipes
API 5L X52 Carbon Steel Pipes may require protective coatings to reduce corrosion caused by moisture, soil conditions, chemicals, and other environmental factors. The right coating depends on the pipeline's location, operating conditions, and project specifications. We offer coating options to meet different pipeline protection requirements.
Fusion-Bonded Epoxy (FBE): Provides a protective barrier against corrosion and is commonly used for buried and underground pipelines.
Three-Layer Polyethylene (3LPE): Combines epoxy, adhesive, and polyethylene layers to provide corrosion protection and resistance to mechanical damage.
Three-Layer Polypropylene (3LPP): Offers corrosion protection and higher temperature resistance for suitable pipeline applications.
Liquid Epoxy Coating: Applied to specified surfaces to protect against corrosion in suitable service environments.
Internal Coatings: Selected according to the transported fluid and operating conditions to help protect the pipe's inner surface.

FAQs
Common questions about API 5L X52 carbon steel pipes, strength, wall design, welding and coatings.
Is X52 the same as L360?
Yes. X52 is the API name and L360 is the ISO 3183 name for the same strength class, 360 MPa minimum yield.
When should I pick X52 over X42?
Pick X52 when you want a thinner, lighter wall for the same pressure, or a higher pressure in the same wall. X42 is simpler and cheaper per tonne, so check which gives the lower installed cost.
How thick should a 24-inch X52 wall be for 80 bar?
With a design factor of 0.72 and no corrosion allowance, about 9.4 mm. A higher class location, a corrosion allowance or a larger test factor will increase it.
Does X52 need preheat for welding?
Often not on thin and medium walls in mild weather, but heavy walls, cold conditions and high restraint can call for it. Follow your qualified procedure under API 1104.
How do I calculate the weight of X52 pipe?
Use (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02466, with both values in mm, to get kg per metre. Multiply by length for total weight.
Is X52 stronger than A106 Grade B?
Yes. X52 has a minimum yield of 360 MPa against 240 MPa for A106 Grade B. A106 is chosen for hot seamless service, while X52 is chosen for pipelines.
Which coating is best for buried X52 pipe?
FBE and 3LPE are the common buried-pipe coatings, usually with cathodic protection. 3LPE gives more mechanical protection, while FBE suits moderate temperatures.
Which documents come with an order?
EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates are included. Inspection reports and third-party certificates are available on request.
