What Are Welded Tubes?
Welded tubes are hollow tubes made by rolling flat steel strip into a round shape and welding the seam. The mill slits a coil to the exact strip width, then passes the strip through forming rolls that curl it into an open tube. A welding head joins the two edges. Stainless steel tubes use TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding, and carbon steel tubes use high-frequency electric resistance welding.
Next, the mill trims or rolls down the weld bead so the outside and inside stay smooth. Most stainless tubes then go through solution annealing, which softens the weld zone and restores corrosion resistance. Sizing rolls bring the tube to its final diameter, and an eddy current probe scans the full weld length. If you need tighter tolerances, the mill pulls the tube through a die, and the result is called a welded and drawn tube. Because the strip is rolled to a very even thickness, welded tubes hold a uniform wall. They also come in long continuous lengths with little scrap, which keeps the price lower than seamless tubes.
Welded Tubes
High-quality welded tubes manufactured for demanding applications across oil & gas, petrochemical, power generation, construction, automotive and engineering industries. Available in multiple materials, diameters, wall thicknesses and manufacturing specifications.
Types of Welded Tubes
Welded tubes come in different types based on the welding process, tube condition, shape, application, and surface finish. Each option offers specific benefits depending on the required performance and end use.
Types by Welding Process
TIG welded tubes are widely used for stainless steel applications where clean and controlled welds are important. Laser welded tubes produce a narrow weld zone and work well for thin-wall applications. ERW tubes are commonly used for carbon steel applications where efficient production and consistent weld quality are required.
Types by Condition
As-welded tubes retain their welded condition after production, while welded and annealed tubes receive heat treatment to improve their properties and relieve stresses. Welded and cold drawn tubes undergo additional cold working to achieve closer dimensional tolerances and improved surface quality.
Types by Shape and Application
Welded tubes are available in round, square, rectangular, and oval shapes. Boiler and heat exchanger tubes are designed for heat and pressure service, while sanitary tubes are used in dairy, food, and pharmaceutical systems. Mechanical and structural tubes are used for equipment, frames, and fabricated structures, while decorative tubes are commonly used in architectural applications.
Types by Surface Finish
Common finishes include annealed and pickled, bright annealed, and polished surfaces. Annealed and pickled tubes have a clean matte appearance, bright annealed tubes offer a smooth and bright surface, and polished tubes can be supplied with satin or mirror finishes depending on the application.

Common Materials for Welded Tubes
Stainless steel is widely used for welded tubes because of its corrosion resistance, strength, and clean surface. Common grades include 304/304L (UNS S30400/S30403) and 316/316L (UNS S31600/S31603) for food, chemical, water, and general industrial applications. 321, 347, and 904L are suitable for higher-temperature or more corrosive environments, while 201 and 430 are often used for decorative and mechanical applications.
Carbon steel welded tubes manufactured to ASTM A178, ASTM A214, and ASTM A500 are used for boilers, condensers, structural work, and general engineering. Duplex grades UNS S32205 and S32750 offer higher strength and good resistance to chloride environments.
A welded tubes manufacturer can recommend the suitable material based on the fluid, operating pressure, temperature, corrosion conditions, and applicable design code. Always specify the grade, standard, and tube condition when placing an order.
What Is the Difference Between Welded Tubes and Seamless Tubes?
The main difference is the seam. Welded tubes come from rolled strip and carry one longitudinal weld. Seamless tubes come from a solid billet and carry none. Modern welded tubes have annealed, tested welds and an even wall, so they serve most boiler, heat exchanger, sanitary, mechanical, and structural jobs at a lower price. Seamless tubes suit the highest pressures and temperatures. Also note that design codes such as ASME B31.3 apply a weld joint factor to welded tubes, often 0.85, unless the weld is fully examined, so the allowed pressure can be lower than for the same seamless tube.
Choose welded tubes when you want a lower price, long lengths, and a good finish. Choose seamless tubes when the tube runs very hot or very high pressure.
| Point | Welded Tubes | Seamless Tubes |
|---|---|---|
| Made From | Rolled steel strip | Solid round billet |
| Seam | One welded seam, annealed | None |
| Wall Thickness | Very even | Can vary more |
| Length | Long continuous lengths | Limited by the piercing mill |
| Shapes | Round, square, rectangular, oval | Mostly round |
| Pressure and Heat | Low to high (with joint factor) | High |
| Price | Lower | Higher |
| Lead Time | Shorter | Longer |
| Best For | Sanitary lines, boilers, heat exchangers, frames, decorative work | Very high pressure and temperature service |
Welded Tubes Chemical Composition

Square tube weight uses Weight (kg/m) = 0.00785 × 4 × Wall × (Side − Wall), with values in mm. The result ignores corner radii, so real weights run slightly lower. We also make rectangular and oval sections to your drawing.
Available Sizes, Dimensions and Tolerances
We supply welded tubes from 1/4" to 6" OD, in walls from 22 BWG (0.71 mm) to 10 BWG (3.40 mm) and heavier walls up to 6.35 mm. Tubes do not use schedule numbers. You order them by outside diameter and wall thickness, and the standard sets how far each can vary. A welded and drawn tube holds a much smaller size variation than an as-welded tube, which is why heat exchangers and sanitary lines often call for drawn tubes.
Standard lengths are 6 m and 12 m, plus random lengths and exact cut lengths for heat exchangers. As a welded tubes supplier in India, we hold ready stock of popular sizes, subject to availability, and we bend tubes into U-shapes on request.
| Product | Available Sizes | Wall Thickness | Standard Lengths |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stainless Steel Welded Tubes | 1/4" to 6" OD | 22 BWG to 6.35 mm | 6 m / 12 m / exact cut |
| Carbon Steel Welded Tubes | 1/4" to 6" OD | 22 BWG to 6.35 mm | 6 m / 12 m / exact cut |
| Square and Rectangular Welded Tubes | 20 × 20 mm to 100 × 100 mm | 1.5 mm to 5 mm | 6 m / 12 m / custom |
| Sanitary and Polished Welded Tubes | 1/2" to 4" OD | 16 BWG to 12 BWG | 6 m / exact cut |

Welded Tubes FAQs
Common questions about welded tube grades, sizes, standards, testing, and supply.
Are welded tubes weaker than seamless tubes?
Not by much. Welded tubes with an annealed, tested weld match the strength of the tube body. Design codes apply a weld joint factor, so the allowed pressure can be slightly lower.
What is the difference between TIG welded and ERW tubes?
TIG welding suits stainless steel and uses an inert gas shield. ERW uses high-frequency current to heat the strip edges and press them together, and it suits carbon steel.
What is a welded and drawn tube?
A welded and drawn tube is a welded tube that the mill pulls through a die. The extra step tightens the size and improves the surface.
What is the difference between ASTM A249, A269, and A554?
ASTM A249 covers welded boiler and heat exchanger tubes. ASTM A269 covers general service tubes, and ASTM A554 covers mechanical and decorative tubing.
Can welded tubes be used in boilers and heat exchangers?
Yes. ASTM A249 stainless tubes and ASTM A178 and A214 carbon steel tubes are made for boilers, condensers, and heat exchangers.
Which welded tube grades do you supply?
We supply stainless steel 201, 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, 347, 430, and 904L, duplex 2205 and 2507, and carbon steel to ASTM A178, A214, A513, and A500.
What sizes do your welded tubes come in?
We supply welded tubes from 1/4" to 6" OD, in walls from 22 BWG to 6.35 mm, plus square and rectangular sections. Other sizes are available on request.
Which certificate do I get with welded tubes?
Every order ships with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate. We issue 3.2 with third-party inspection on request.
Are you a welded tubes manufacturer or a supplier?
Both. We manufacture welded tubes and also work as a welded tubes supplier in India, with ready stock of popular sizes.
Do you export welded tubes outside India?
We ship to more than 85+ countries and handle export packing and paperwork.
