What Are Nickel Alloy Heat Exchanger Tubes?
Nickel alloy heat exchanger tubes are thin-wall tubes made from nickel-based alloys that carry heat between two fluids inside an exchanger, condenser or cooler. One fluid flows inside the tube and the other flows around it, so the wall must conduct heat well and resist both fluids.
Nickel alloys are chosen when stainless steel would pit, crack or scale. They resist chlorides, sulphuric and phosphoric acid, caustic soda and high temperature, and they stay tough through repeated heating and cooling. Most tubes are seamless and cold drawn to give an even wall and a smooth bore, which helps heat transfer and cleaning. Welded and drawn tubes are also used where the size and standard allow.
Tubes are ordered by exact outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness, usually in BWG gauge, and they are held to tight tolerances because they must slide through baffles and seal in the tubesheet.

What Is the Difference Between Nickel Alloy Heat Exchanger Tubes and Stainless Steel Heat Exchanger Tubes?
The short answer: stainless steel tubes cost less and work well in mild service, while nickel alloy tubes last longer where chlorides, strong acids or high heat attack stainless. Use stainless where 304 or 316 survives, and step up to nickel alloy when stainless tubes pit, crack or scale.
| Point | Nickel Alloy Heat Exchanger Tubes | Stainless Steel Heat Exchanger Tubes |
|---|---|---|
| Base metal | Nickel, about 30–99% | Iron with 16–26% chromium |
| Chloride resistance | High, with strong resistance to stress corrosion cracking | Limited; pitting and cracking can occur |
| Acid resistance | Strong in sulphuric, phosphoric, hydrochloric and mixed acids | Good in mild and oxidising media |
| Heat | Keeps strength and resists scaling at high temperature | Limited at the top end |
| Thermal conductivity | Lower than copper alloys, similar to or slightly below stainless | Similar |
| Density | 7.94–8.89 g/cm³ | About 7.9–8.0 g/cm³ |
| Cost | Higher, driven by nickel and molybdenum | Lower |
| Common standards | ASTM B163, B444, B622 | ASTM A213, A249, A269 |
| Typical use | Seawater, acid and sour-service exchangers | General process and utility exchangers |

Nickel Alloy Heat Exchanger Tubes Size and Weight Chart
Weight depends on OD, wall thickness and alloy density. Inconel 625 has a density of about 8.44 g/cm³, so we use this formula:
OD and wall are in mm. Example: 3/4 in OD, 16 BWG (1.65 mm) is (19.05 − 1.65) × 1.65 × 0.02652 = 0.761 kg/m. Multiply by length for total weight. For other alloys, swap in the factor from the second table below.
| OD (in) | OD (mm) | 14 BWG, 2.11 mm (kg/m) | 16 BWG, 1.65 mm (kg/m) | 18 BWG, 1.24 mm (kg/m) |

Available Sizes, Dimensions and Tolerances
Nickel Alloy Heat Exchanger Tubes are ordered by OD and wall thickness, with the wall given in BWG gauge or in mm. Common exchanger ODs are 5/8, 3/4 and 1 in, and the tables cover 1/4 in to 2 in (6.35 to 50.8 mm). A higher BWG number means a thinner wall. Other ODs and metric walls can be quoted on request, and lengths are cut to your bundle drawing. For U-bend tubes, give the bend radius and leg lengths on the drawing.
| BWG | Wall (in) | Wall (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 0.134 | 3.40 |
| 12 | 0.109 | 2.77 |
| 14 | 0.083 | 2.11 |
| 16 | 0.065 | 1.65 |
| 18 | 0.049 | 1.24 |
| 20 | 0.035 | 0.89 |
| 22 | 0.028 | 0.71 |
Tolerances on OD, wall and length follow ASTM B829 and the product standard, and TEMA sets the tube dimensions for exchanger design. Tell us if your drawing calls for closer limits.

Common questions about nickel alloy heat exchanger tube grades, seawater service, U-bends, testing, and supply.
Which nickel alloy grade should I choose for my exchanger?
Choose by the fluids. Monel 400 and Inconel 625 suit seawater, Incoloy 825 suits sulphuric and phosphoric acid, Hastelloy C276 suits mixed acids and wet chlorine, Incoloy 800H suits high-temperature heaters, and Nickel 200 suits caustic soda.
When should I choose nickel alloy over stainless steel tubes?
Choose nickel alloy when chlorides, strong acids, sour gas or high temperature are shortening the life of stainless tubes. For mild duty, 304 or 316 is often enough.
Should I order seamless or welded and drawn tubes?
Seamless tubes are the usual choice for pressure duty and critical service. Welded and drawn tubes can cost less in some sizes and suit lower-pressure exchangers where the standard allows.
Do you supply U-bend tubes?
Yes, on request. Give the bend radius, leg lengths and tube count on the drawing, and say if the bends need stress relief.
How should I fix tubes into the tubesheet?
Tubes can be expanded, seal-welded or strength-welded into the tubesheet. For welding, use a matching filler such as ERNiCrMo-3 for Inconel 625 or ERNiCrMo-4 for Hastelloy C276. Keep the joint clean of oil, paint and marking ink, and use low heat input.
How do I choose the wall thickness?
Pick the wall from the design pressure, corrosion allowance and tube-joining method, then confirm it against the exchanger code. Common walls run from 14 BWG to 18 BWG for heat transfer duty, and thicker walls suit higher pressure or heavy corrosion allowance.
Which tests are done on heat exchanger tubes?
Tests follow ASTM B163 or the alloy standard and ASTM B829. They include chemical analysis, tensile, flattening and flaring tests, and a hydrostatic or eddy current test on every tube. Third-party witnessing is available on request.
Can nickel alloy tubes be used in sour service?
Alloys such as Inconel 625, Incoloy 825 and Hastelloy C276 are widely used in sour service under NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, provided the material meets the condition and hardness limits in that standard. State the sour-service requirement when you enquire.
What tolerances apply to OD and wall?
ASTM B829 and the product standard set them, and TEMA covers the exchanger tube dimensions. Cold-drawn tube holds tighter limits than hot-finished tube, and the limits depend on tube size.
What sizes can I order?
The tables above cover OD 1/4 in to 2 in (6.35 to 50.8 mm) in common BWG walls. Other ODs, walls and lengths can be quoted on request, and popular sizes sit in ready stock, subject to availability.
How do I calculate the weight of an order?
Use Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall) × Wall × factor, with OD and wall in mm and the factor from the alloy table above. Multiply by length and quantity. Real weight varies slightly with wall tolerance.
What affects the price of Nickel Alloy Heat Exchanger Tubes?
Grade is the main factor, because nickel and molybdenum content move the cost. OD, wall, tube form, finish, testing, quantity, inspection and freight also count.
Which certificates come with the tubes?
Each order carries an EN 10204 3.1 certificate showing chemistry and mechanical results. A 3.2 certificate and third-party inspection are available on request.
Are you a manufacturer or a supplier of Nickel Alloy Heat Exchanger Tubes?
We are both. We manufacture near Mumbai and supply ready stock of popular sizes from the same location, subject to availability.
Do you export Nickel Alloy Heat Exchanger Tubes, and how are they packed?
Yes. We ship to 85+ countries from our Mumbai export office, and we pack the tubes to suit sea or air freight and your project needs.
