Material and Grades of ASTM A53 Grade B Carbon Steel Pipes
A53 has two grades, A and B, and Grade B is the one specified for most pressure work. It is made in two types.
Type S (seamless): Produced from a solid billet with no weld seam. It gets the full allowable stress under ASME B31.3 and suits higher-pressure and heavier-wall lines.
Type E (electric resistance welded): Formed from strip and welded with no filler metal. It is accurate in size, economical and widely used for general piping, with a joint factor of 0.85 under B31.3.
Grade B is not made in furnace-butt welded form, since that type is limited to Grade A. Both Type S and Type E can be supplied black or hot-dip galvanised. Many projects also ask for dual certification, such as A53 Grade B with A106 Grade B and API 5L Grade B. This is possible where the chemistry and properties meet each standard, so tell us at enquiry.
ERW vs Seamless ASTM A53 Grade B Pipes: Which Type Do You Need?
| Point | Type E (ERW) | Type S (Seamless) |
|---|---|---|
| How it is made | Strip is formed and welded along one seam | Pierced and rolled from a solid billet |
| Weld seam | Yes, tested and normalised | None |
| B31.3 joint factor | 0.85 | 1.00 |
| Allowable stress (B31.3) | About 117 MPa | About 138 MPa |
| Wall range | Thin to medium | Thin to very heavy |
| Size accuracy | Very good | Good |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Best for | Water, gas, fire lines, structural and utility piping | Higher pressure, heavier wall and critical service |
Choose ERW for general piping where cost matters and pressure is moderate. Choose seamless for higher pressure, heavier walls or lines where a failure would be costly. Many projects mix both, using ERW on utility runs and seamless on pressure sections.

Pressure Capacity of ASTM A53 Grade B Carbon Steel Pipes
The table gives an indicative working pressure for Schedule 40 pipe, using Barlow's formula P = 2 × S × t ÷ D, with an allowable stress S of 138 MPa (20 ksi, as used in ASME B31.3 at ambient temperature) for seamless pipe, and the 0.85 joint factor applied for ERW pipe. It uses the nominal wall and no corrosion allowance. Allowable stress falls as temperature rises, and mill tolerance also reduces capacity. Final design must follow ASME B31.3 or B31.1 for your service.
P is pressure, S is allowable stress, t is wall thickness and D is outside diameter. The values below are indicative only and must be verified against the applicable design code.
| NPS | OD (mm) | Sch 40 wall (mm) | Seamless pressure (bar) | ERW pressure (bar) |

ASTM A53 Grade B Carbon Steel Pipes Sizes, Dimensions and Schedules
A pipe is named by its nominal size, but its wall depends on the schedule. For sizes up to 10 inch, STD and Sch 40 have the same wall, and XS and Sch 80 match. On larger sizes they differ, as the table for 2 inch and 20 inch pipe shows. DN is the metric size for each NPS.
| Schedule | Wall at 2" / DN 50 (mm) | Wall at 20" / DN 500 (mm) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| STD | 3.91 | 9.53 | Standard general piping |
| Sch 40 | 3.91 | 15.09 | Standard process and utility piping |
| XS | 5.54 | 12.70 | Higher-pressure lines |
| Sch 80 | 5.54 | 26.19 | Heavy duty and higher pressure |
Under ASTM A53, outside diameter is held within ±1% of the specified size, and wall thickness within −12.5%. Pipe is supplied in single random and double random lengths, and we cut and bevel to your drawing.

FAQs
Common questions about ASTM A53 Grade B carbon steel pipes, seamless and ERW types, finishes and supply.
Why choose Grade B instead of Grade A?
Grade B is stronger, with a minimum yield of 240 MPa against 205 MPa, so it carries more pressure at the same wall. Grade A is softer and easier to bend and flange.
Is A53 Grade B the same as A106 Grade B?
No. The chemistry and strength are similar, but A106 covers seamless pipe for high-temperature service, while A53 covers welded and seamless pipe for ordinary uses, including galvanised pipe.
Can pipe be dual or triple certified?
Yes, where the chemistry and properties meet each standard. Pipe can often be certified to A53 Grade B together with A106 Grade B and API 5L Grade B. Tell us at enquiry.
How do I calculate the weight of A53 pipe?
Use (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02466, with both values in mm, to get kg per metre. Multiply by length for total weight.
Which end finish should I choose for small sizes?
Threaded and coupled ends suit screwed connections on small sizes, while plain or beveled ends suit welding. Tell us your joining method and we will prepare the ends.
What is the difference between STD and Sch 40?
For sizes up to 10 inch they have the same wall. For 12 inch and above, STD stays at 9.53 mm while Sch 40 gets thicker, so check the wall on your drawing.
Which documents come with an order?
EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates are included. Inspection reports and third-party certificates are available on request.
How is A53 pipe packed for export?
Pipes are bundled with end caps and strapped, with a protective coating applied where needed. Heat numbers are marked on each bundle for traceability.
