What Are Stainless Steel ERW Pipes?
Stainless steel ERW pipes are welded pipes made from flat stainless steel strips. During production, the mill unrolls a steel coil, cuts the strip to the required width, and shapes it through forming rolls until the edges meet. High-frequency electric current heats the edges, and pressure rolls join them together without using filler metal. The pipe then goes through trimming, sizing, heat treatment, and testing.
Heat treatment helps improve the strength and corrosion resistance of the welded area. The pipe is heated to around 1,040°C or higher and then cooled quickly. This process helps restore the properties of the stainless steel around the weld. Pickling and passivation clean the surface and help form a uniform protective chromium oxide layer.
ERW pipes have consistent wall thickness and a smooth finish because they start from precisely rolled stainless steel strips. They are also available in long lengths and usually produce less material waste than seamless pipes. This makes them suitable for handrails, tanks, piping skids, food processing lines, and other industrial applications.

What Is the Difference Between Stainless Steel ERW Pipes and Stainless Steel EFW Pipes?
The difference is the weld and the starting material. ERW pipes start as coil and weld with high-frequency current and no filler, so the mill can run long, fast, continuous lengths in small to medium sizes. EFW pipes, short for electric fusion welded, start as plate and weld with arc welding and filler metal, so they reach very large diameters and heavy walls. The EFW standard is ASTM A358.
Choose ERW for sizes up to 24 inches, thin to medium walls, and tight budgets. Choose EFW for large diameters, thick walls, and heavy-duty process lines.
| Point | Stainless Steel ERW Pipes | Stainless Steel EFW Pipes |
|---|---|---|
| Starting Material | Coil or strip | Plate |
| Welding Method | High-frequency resistance, no filler | Electric arc fusion, with filler |
| Governing Standard | ASTM A312, A554 | ASTM A358 |
| Size Range | 1/2" to 24" NPS | 6" to 100" NPS and larger |
| Wall Thickness | Thin to medium | Medium to very heavy |
| Weld Appearance | Narrow, trimmed flush | Visible, wider weld bead |
| Production Speed | Fast, continuous | Slower, plate by plate |
| Price | Lower | Higher |
| Best For | Process lines, handrails, tanks, frames | Large ducts, heavy-wall process lines, big headers |

Common Materials
Different stainless steel grades offer different levels of corrosion resistance, strength, temperature resistance, and cost. Stainless steel ERW pipe suppliers can provide these grades based on the application, required standard, and surface finish.
Grade 304: The most widely used stainless steel grade. It contains about 18% chromium and 8% nickel and offers good resistance to water, food, and mild chemicals.
Grade 316: Contains around 2% to 3% molybdenum, giving it better resistance to chlorides, coastal environments, brine, and cleaning chemicals.
Grade 304L: A low-carbon version of 304. Its lower carbon content helps maintain corrosion resistance in the weld area.
Grade 316L: A low-carbon version of 316 that provides good corrosion resistance after welding and suits demanding process applications.
Grade 321: A titanium-stabilized grade designed for elevated-temperature applications, generally from about 425°C to 850°C.
Grade 347: A niobium-stabilized grade that performs well in high-temperature and welded applications.
Grade 904L (UNS N08904): Contains higher amounts of nickel and molybdenum, making it suitable for demanding acidic and corrosive environments.
Grade 201 (UNS S20100): Uses manganese and nitrogen to replace some nickel. It offers a lower-cost option but has lower corrosion resistance than 304.
Grade 202 (UNS S20200): Similar to 201, with manganese and nitrogen replacing some nickel. It is mainly suitable for indoor and decorative applications.
Grade 430 (UNS S43000): A magnetic ferritic stainless steel with no nickel, commonly used for indoor, decorative, and general applications.
When ordering, specify the grade, applicable standard, and surface finish together. Two pipes may look similar but can perform very differently depending on their stainless steel grade.
Available Sizes, Dimensions and Schedules
We supply stainless steel ERW pipes from 1/2" to 24" NPS in schedules 5S, 10S, 40S, and 80S, and OD-based pipes from 19.05 mm to 101.6 mm in walls from 1.0 mm to 3.0 mm. A schedule is a code for wall thickness, so the same schedule gives a different wall in mm at each pipe size, while the outside diameter stays fixed for each NPS. Handrail and furniture pipes follow OD and wall in mm instead of schedules, and the tolerance class decides how neatly the pipe fits fittings and couplers.
Standard lengths are 6 m, 20 ft, and random lengths, and we cut to exact length. As a stainless steel ERW pipes supplier in India, we hold common grades and sizes in stock, subject to availability.

Stainless Steel ERW Pipes FAQs
Common questions about stainless steel ERW pipe grades, sizes, finishes, testing, and supply.
Should I choose 304 or 316 ERW pipes for a food or dairy line?
Grade 304L suits most food and dairy lines. Choose 316L when the line sees chlorides, brine, or strong cleaning chemicals.
Can 201 or 202 ERW pipes replace 304?
Not where corrosion matters. Grades 201 and 202 hold less nickel, so they resist corrosion less, and they suit dry, indoor, decorative use only.
Can stainless steel ERW pipes carry pressure?
Yes, within their design limits. ASTM A312 welded pipe serves pressure lines, and design codes such as ASME B31.3 apply a weld joint factor, often 0.85, so the allowed pressure can be lower than for seamless pipe of the same wall.
When should I choose seamless pipes instead of ERW pipes?
Choose seamless pipes for high pressure, high temperature, or critical corrosion service. Choose ERW pipes for moderate duty, thin walls, and lower cost.
Do you cut, bend, and polish the pipes?
Yes. We cut to exact length, bevel the ends, and polish to the grit you choose.
What sizes do your stainless steel ERW pipes come in?
We supply pipes from 1/2" to 24" NPS in schedules 5S to 80S, plus OD-based pipes from 19.05 mm to 101.6 mm. Other sizes are available on request.
What decides the price of stainless steel ERW pipes?
Nickel and molybdenum prices, grade, size, wall thickness, finish, quantity, and delivery port all shape the price. Send us your enquiry for a current quote.
Is the weld seam tested on every pipe?
Yes. An eddy current probe scans the full weld of every pipe, and we add hydrostatic, flattening, and flaring tests as the standard requires.
Are the pipes heat-treated after welding?
Process pipes to ASTM A312 are solution annealed after welding, which restores corrosion resistance in the weld zone. Decorative pipes to ASTM A554 ship in the condition the order specifies.
Which certificate comes with the pipes?
Every order ships with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate. We issue 3.2 with third-party inspection on request.
Are you a stainless steel ERW pipes manufacturer or a supplier?
Both. We manufacture the pipes and also work as a stainless steel ERW pipes supplier in India, with ready stock of common grades and sizes.
Do you export stainless steel ERW pipes?
Yes. We ship to 85+ countries and handle export packing and paperwork.
