What Are Cu-Ni 90/10 Pipes?

Cu-Ni 90/10 pipes are pipes made from a copper-nickel alloy containing about 90% copper and 10% nickel. Small additions of elements such as iron and manganese are used in many commercial grades to improve strength, corrosion resistance, and overall performance. The alloy is well known for its resistance to seawater corrosion, erosion, and biofouling, while also offering good strength and weldability. Cu-Ni 90/10 pipes are commonly supplied as UNS C70600 and related 90/10 copper-nickel grades, with seamless or welded construction available according to the required specification.

What Is the Difference Between Cu-Ni 90/10 Pipes and Stainless Steel 316L Pipes?

The short answer: 90/10 copper-nickel resists pitting and marine growth in seawater, while 316L stainless is stronger but can pit and crevice-corrode in warm, still or chlorinated seawater. Use 316L for fresh water and mild chemicals, and 90/10 for seawater cooling, fire mains and ballast lines.

Cu-Ni 90/10 Pipes Size and Weight Chart

Weight depends on OD and wall thickness. Cu-Ni 90/10 has a density of about 8.94 g/cm³, so we use this formula:

Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02809

OD and wall are in mm. Example: NPS 4 Sch 40S is (114.3 − 6.02) × 6.02 × 0.02809 = 18.31 kg/m. Multiply by length for total weight. Walls for each schedule are listed in the next section.

Available Sizes, Dimensions and Schedules

Cu-Ni 90/10 Pipes follow ASME B36.19M for Sch 5S, 10S, 40S and 80S, and other ODs and walls can be made to your drawing. A schedule is a wall-thickness code, so for the same OD a higher number means a thicker wall. Small bores often need a heavier wall to keep seawater velocity and erosion in check, so confirm the wall against your design code.

Cu-Ni 90/10 Pipes FAQs

Common questions about Cu-Ni 90/10 pipe seawater velocity, protective film, marine growth, welding, and supply.

What seawater velocity can Cu-Ni 90/10 take?

As a rule of thumb, 90/10 is designed for velocities up to about 3.5 m/s, and less in small bores. Above that, erosion can wear the film, so choose 70/30 for faster flow. Follow your design code and project specification for the final limit.

How long does the protective film take to form?

It starts within hours of contact with clean seawater and thickens over the first weeks and months, then keeps improving. Filling the line with clean, flowing seawater before commissioning helps the film form evenly.

Does Cu-Ni 90/10 resist marine growth?

Yes. Copper ions released at the surface discourage barnacles, mussels and weed, so the pipe stays cleaner than steel or stainless. Keep the water moving, because long stagnant periods reduce the effect.

Can Cu-Ni 90/10 be used in polluted seawater?

Use caution. Sulphide in polluted or stagnant water can damage the protective film. Avoid long idle periods in harbour water, and flush the line with clean seawater before service.

Is there a galvanic risk with steel flanges and valves?

Yes. Copper-nickel is nobler than carbon steel, so steel parts in the same seawater line can corrode faster. Use insulating kits, compatible coatings or matching copper-nickel flanges where possible.

How should I weld Cu-Ni 90/10 pipes?

Use TIG or MIG welding with an ERCuNi filler or ECuNi electrodes, a clean joint and low heat input. Keep the joint free of oil, paint, sulphur and lead. Preheat is normally not needed.

Is Cu-Ni 90/10 better than 316L stainless steel for seawater?

For flowing seawater cooling, fire mains and ballast lines, usually yes, because it resists pitting, crevice corrosion and marine growth. Stainless 316L is stronger and costs less, so it suits fresh water and mild chemical lines.

What sizes, schedules and tolerances apply?

The tables above cover NPS 1/2 to 12 in Sch 5S, 10S, 40S and 80S. Tolerances follow ASTM B466 for seamless pipe and ASTM B467 for welded pipe. Other sizes and walls can be quoted on request, and popular sizes sit in ready stock, subject to availability.

How do I calculate the weight of an order?

Use Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02809, with OD and wall in mm. Multiply by length and quantity. Real weight varies slightly with wall tolerance.
