What Are Copper Nickel Seamless Pipes?
Copper Nickel Seamless Pipes are pipes with no weld seam, made from a copper alloy that carries 10% to 30% nickel, plus small amounts of iron and manganese. The pipe is extruded or pierced from a solid billet, then drawn or rolled to size.
The alloy forms a thin, tough film on its surface in seawater. This film protects the metal from corrosion and from erosion. Copper in the alloy also discourages barnacles and other marine growth, so pipes stay cleaner and flow stays high. The two main alloys are 90/10 (10% nickel) and 70/30 (30% nickel), and 70/30 gives better resistance to fast-flowing, polluted or warm seawater.
Copper Nickel Seamless Pipes
High-quality copper nickel seamless pipes manufactured for demanding applications across marine, chemical, petrochemical, power generation, oil and gas, construction and engineering industries. Available in multiple grades, sizes, wall thicknesses and manufacturing specifications.
Types of Copper Nickel Seamless Pipes
As a Copper Nickel Seamless Pipes Manufacturer, we supply pipes in different copper-nickel grades, tempers, wall thicknesses, and end finishes for marine and seawater applications.
- 90/10 Copper Nickel Pipes (C70600): A general-purpose seawater alloy containing about 10% nickel, with iron added for improved seawater resistance.
- 70/30 Copper Nickel Pipes (C71500): Contains about 30% nickel and is selected for higher flow velocities and more demanding seawater service.
- 70/30 Copper Nickel Pipes (C71640): A strengthened copper-nickel alloy with higher iron and manganese for demanding marine applications.
- Annealed Pipes: Heat-treated pipes with improved ductility, making them easier to bend and flare during fabrication.
- Drawn Pipes: Cold-drawn pipes offering tighter dimensions and a smoother surface.
- Light-Wall Pipes: Such as Schedule 10S, used for suitable low-pressure seawater lines.
- Standard-Wall Pipes: Such as Schedule 40S, commonly selected for general seawater piping.
- Heavy-Wall Pipes: Such as Schedule 80S, used where greater wall thickness is required for higher-pressure service.
- Plain-End and Bevelled-End Pipes: Supplied with plain or prepared ends; bevelled ends can be prepared to the applicable welding specification.

What Is the Difference Between Copper Nickel Seamless Pipes and Stainless Steel Seamless Pipes?
The short answer: copper nickel resists seawater corrosion and marine fouling better than stainless steel, and it is far less prone to crevice attack in still water. Stainless steel is much stronger and handles higher pressure, higher flow and non-marine fluids better. For plain seawater piping, copper nickel is often the longer-lasting choice.
| Factor | Copper Nickel Seamless Pipes | Stainless Steel Seamless Pipes (316L) |
|---|---|---|
| Seawater corrosion | Excellent | Good, but pitting and crevice risk in still water |
| Marine fouling | Resists growth | Prone to growth |
| Strength | Lower | Higher |
| Flow velocity limit in seawater | About 3.5 to 4.5 m/s | Higher |
| Sulphide-polluted water | Sensitive | Better |
| Weight per metre | Heavier (density 8.94) | Lighter (density about 7.9) |
| Cost | Higher per tonne, long life | Lower per tonne |
| Typical use | Ships, offshore seawater systems, desalination | General process, chemical and food lines |

Copper Nickel Seamless Pipes FAQs
Common questions about copper nickel seamless pipe alloys, seawater flow, welding, dimensions, and supply.
Which alloy should I choose, 90/10 or 70/30?
Pick 90/10 for normal seawater flow and cost-sensitive jobs. Pick 70/30 when flow is fast, the water is warm or polluted, or the line is critical.
What flow velocity can copper nickel pipes handle?
As a design guide, 90/10 handles seawater up to about 3.5 m/s and 70/30 up to about 4.5 m/s. Higher speeds can wear the protective film, so your designer should check the limit against the code.
Why does iron matter in copper nickel?
Iron, with manganese, strengthens the protective surface film. It improves resistance to erosion in fast-moving seawater. That is why C71640 carries more iron and manganese than C71500.
Is copper nickel affected by polluted water?
Yes. Sulphides in polluted harbour water can damage the protective film. Clean seawater gives the best life, and flushing with clean water during shutdown helps.
Can copper nickel be connected to steel pipe?
Yes, but copper nickel and steel form a galvanic pair in seawater, and steel can corrode faster. Use insulating flanges or sleeves, or a coated steel section, near the joint.
How do I weld copper nickel pipes?
Use a matching copper-nickel filler metal such as ERCuNi, a clean joint and a qualified procedure. Keep the joint free of oil, sulphur and lead.
What tolerances apply to OD and wall?
ASTM B466 sets them. Tell us your limits at enquiry, and we will quote against them.
What sizes can I order?
The chart above covers NPS 1/2 to 12 in Sch 10S, 40S and 80S. Other sizes and walls can be quoted on request.
How do I calculate the weight of an order?
Use Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02809, with OD and wall in mm. Multiply by length and quantity. Real weight varies slightly with wall tolerance.
What affects the price of Copper Nickel Seamless Pipes?
Alloy is the biggest factor, since copper and nickel prices move the cost, and 70/30 costs more than 90/10. Size, wall, condition, testing, inspection, quantity and freight also count.
Which certificates come with the pipes?
Each order carries an EN 10204 3.1 certificate showing chemistry and mechanical results. A 3.2 certificate and third-party inspection are available on request.
Is every pipe tested before it ships?
ASTM B466 requires a hydrostatic test or an eddy current test on each pipe. Tell us your preferred test when you enquire.
Are you a manufacturer or a supplier of Copper Nickel Seamless Pipes?
We are both. We manufacture near Mumbai and supply ready stock of popular sizes from the same location, subject to availability.
Do you export Copper Nickel Seamless Pipes, and how are they packed?
Yes. We ship to 85+ countries from our Mumbai export office, and we pack the pipes to suit sea or air freight and your project needs.
