What Are Carbon Steel ERW Pipes?
A carbon steel ERW pipe is a welded pipe made from low carbon steel strip. The mill unrolls a hot rolled coil, curls the strip into a round, and passes a high-frequency electric current through the two edges. The edges heat up and soften, and rollers squeeze them together until they fuse into one seam. No filler wire is used. Then the mill trims the weld bead, heat-treats the seam, sizes the pipe, and tests it.
The steel itself is simple. Carbon stays around 0.30% or lower, with manganese for strength, so the pipe welds, bends, and threads easily on site. Indian buyers also call these pipes MS ERW pipes, black pipes, or GI pipes when galvanized.
Because the strip comes off a rolling mill with very even thickness, the wall of an ERW pipe is very uniform. Because the process runs continuously, the pipe also costs less per tonne than seamless pipe. The trade-off is the seam, which is why design codes give welded pipe a joint factor and why the highest-pressure, hottest lines still use seamless pipe.

Common Materials
Carbon steel ERW pipes are generally produced from low-carbon steel, selected for good strength, weldability, and consistent forming during the ERW process. Common specifications include ASTM A53 Grade A and B, ASTM A135 Grade A and B, ASTM A500 Grade B and C, API 5L Grade B through X70, and IS 1239 light, medium, and heavy classes.
For European requirements, grades such as EN 10217-1 P235TR2 and P265TR2 and EN 10255 S195T are also available for suitable applications. The grade is selected according to the required pressure, mechanical properties, service conditions, and applicable standard.
We are a carbon steel ERW pipes manufacturer with experience in producing different grades, sizes, wall thicknesses, lengths, and finishes. When placing an order, the grade, standard, size, and finish should be specified together to ensure the pipe matches the intended application.
What Is the Difference Between Carbon Steel ERW Pipes and Seamless Pipes?
The difference is the seam, and the seam changes price, pressure limits, and design rules. Carbon steel ERW pipes have one welded seam and cost less. Seamless pipes have none and suit the highest pressure and temperature. Design codes reflect this. Under ASME B31.3, A53 Type E welded pipe carries a quality factor of 0.85, while seamless A106 pipe carries 1.00, so the same wall can carry a little less pressure in ERW.
Choose ERW when the line carries water, air, gas, or oil at moderate pressure, or when you build structures. Choose seamless when steam, high temperature, or high pressure sets the design.

Available Sizes, Dimensions and Schedules
We roll carbon steel ERW pipes from 1/2" to 24" NPS. A schedule is a wall-thickness code, so SCH 40 gives a different wall in mm at each pipe size, while the outside diameter stays fixed for each NPS. For Indian projects, IS 1239 light, medium, and heavy classes set the wall by nominal bore instead.
Standard lengths are 6 m and 12 m, plus single random (16–22 ft) and double random (36–40 ft). We cut to any length your site needs. As a carbon steel ERW pipes supplier in India, we hold the common sizes in black and galvanized finish, subject to availability.
| Product | Available Sizes | Wall Thickness | Standard Lengths |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black ERW Pipes | 1/2" to 24" NPS | SCH 10 to SCH 80, IS 1239 | 6 m / 12 m / random / custom |
| Galvanized ERW Pipes | 1/2" to 12" NPS | SCH 40, IS 1239 medium and heavy | 6 m / custom |
| API 5L ERW Pipes | 1/2" to 24" NPS | SCH 10 to SCH 80 | 6 m / 12 m / random / custom |
| Square and Rectangular ERW Pipes | Up to 200 × 200 mm | 1.6 mm to 10 mm | 6 m / 12 m / custom |

Carbon Steel ERW Pipes FAQs
Common questions about carbon steel ERW pipe grades, sizes, standards, testing, and supply.
What does "Type E" mean on an ASTM A53 pipe?
"Type E" means electric resistance welded. "Type S" means seamless, and "Type F" means furnace butt welded.
Are carbon steel ERW pipes weaker than seamless pipes?
The pipe body has similar strength. The design code applies a joint factor to the seam, so the allowed pressure can be a little lower than for seamless pipe.
What is the difference between black and galvanized ERW pipes?
Black pipe has a natural steel finish and suits indoor and buried lines that get other protection. Galvanized pipe wears a zinc coat and suits water, weather, and fire-fighting service.
What does Gr. B mean on an ERW pipe?
Gr. B is the stronger of the two common grades. It has a minimum yield strength of 35 ksi (240 MPa), against 30 ksi (205 MPa) for Gr. A.
Can carbon steel ERW pipes carry gas?
Yes. API 5L and ASTM A53 ERW pipes carry natural gas in distribution and gathering lines within the limits of ASME B31.8 and your project specification.
Can I weld, bend, and thread carbon steel ERW pipes?
Yes. Low carbon steel welds easily, bends without cracking, and takes standard pipe threads, which is why plumbers and fabricators like it.
What sizes do your ERW pipes come in?
We supply carbon steel ERW pipes from 1/2" to 24" NPS in schedules from SCH 10 to SCH 80 and in IS 1239 classes. Other walls are available on request.
What decides the price of carbon steel ERW pipes?
Coil price, grade, size, wall, galvanizing or coating, quantity, and delivery port all shape the price. Send us your enquiry for a current quote.
Which certificate comes with the pipes?
Every order ships with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate. We issue 3.2 with third-party inspection on request.
Are you a carbon steel ERW pipes manufacturer or a supplier?
Both. We manufacture the pipes and also work as a carbon steel ERW pipes supplier in India, with ready stock of popular sizes.
Do you export carbon steel ERW pipes?
Yes. We ship to more than 85+ countries and handle export packing and paperwork.
