What Are Stainless Steel LSAW Pipes?
Stainless steel LSAW pipes are large-diameter pipes made from stainless steel plate with a straight weld running along their length. LSAW means Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded. They are also known as DSAW (Double Submerged Arc Welded) pipes, while some applications refer to them as EFW (Electric Fusion Welded) pipes under fusion-welded stainless steel standards such as ASTM A358.
The manufacturing process starts with carefully inspected stainless steel plate. The long edges are prepared for welding, and the plate is formed into a round shape using JCO, UO, or three-roll bending methods. The seam is then welded from both the inside and outside. Depending on the grade and application, TIG or plasma welding may be used for the root, followed by submerged arc welding. The filler metal matches the pipe grade, such as 308L for 304L and 316L for 316L.
After welding, the pipe undergoes solution annealing at around 1,040°C or higher to restore corrosion resistance in the weld area. We then straighten and size the pipe before pickling and passivation. Welds can be checked using radiographic or ultrasonic testing, followed by hydrostatic testing. Since LSAW pipes use thick stainless steel plate, they can handle large diameters and heavy wall thicknesses for demanding applications.

What Is the Difference Between Stainless Steel LSAW Pipes and Stainless Steel ERW Pipes?
The difference is the starting material, the weld, and the size. ERW pipes start as thin coil and weld with high-frequency current and no filler, so the mill makes them fast and cheap in small and medium sizes, up to about 24 inches. LSAW pipes start as thick plate and weld with arc welding and filler metal, so the mill reaches large diameters and heavy walls that coil mills cannot roll.
Choose ERW for small and medium lines with thin walls. Choose LSAW for large diameters, thick walls, and heavy-duty process or duct lines.

Stainless Steel LSAW Pipes Mechanical Properties
Mechanical properties show how much load the pipe carries before it stretches (yield) or breaks (tensile). Values are minimum unless marked max.
| Grade | Tensile Strength ksi (MPa) | Yield Strength ksi (MPa) | Elongation % | Hardness (max) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 304 | 75 (515) | 30 (205) | 35 | – |

| 2507 | 116 (800) | 80 (550) | 15 | 310 HBW / 32 HRC |
Strength is only half the picture for a welded pipe, because design codes also give the weld a joint efficiency. Under ASTM A358, Class 1 and Class 3 pipes (fully radiographed) earn the highest joint efficiency, and the lower classes earn less. The mill test certificate lists the exact values for each heat, plus the weld test results.

Common Materials
Stainless steel LSAW pipes are available in several material grades, with austenitic stainless steels commonly used for applications involving water, food, chemicals, and general industrial service. Grade 304L (UNS S30403) offers good corrosion resistance, while 316L (UNS S31603) contains molybdenum for better resistance to chlorides and acids. Their low carbon content also helps protect the weld area after fabrication.
321 Stainless Steel: Titanium-stabilized grade that performs well at temperatures of around 425°C to 850°C.
347 Stainless Steel: Niobium-stabilized grade suitable for elevated-temperature applications and welded service.
904L (UNS N08904): Offers strong resistance to aggressive acids, including hot sulphuric and phosphoric acid.
Duplex 2205 (UNS S32205): Combines high strength with good resistance to chloride-related corrosion and stress cracking.
Super Duplex 2507 (UNS S32750): Provides higher strength and excellent resistance to severe chloride environments.
Experienced stainless steel LSAW pipe suppliers can provide these grades according to the required standard, weld class, surface finish, and inspection requirements. Engineers also use PREN = %Cr + 3.3 × %Mo + 16 × %N to compare resistance to pitting in chloride environments. A higher PREN value generally indicates better pitting resistance.
Available Sizes, Dimensions and Schedules
We make stainless steel LSAW pipes from 8" to 48" OD, in walls from 3 mm to 25 mm. Large pipes are ordered by outside diameter and wall thickness in mm, not by schedule number, although ASME B36.19M schedules like 10S and 40S still guide the wall for sizes up to 30". The standard sets the allowed tolerances on diameter, wall, and out-of-roundness. Because a welded pipe is rolled from plate, you can also order a non-standard diameter and wall if your drawing needs it. Standard lengths run from 6 m to 12 m, and we cut custom lengths on request.
As a stainless steel LSAW pipes supplier in India, we hold selected grades of plate in stock, subject to availability, and we form pipe to order.

Stainless Steel LSAW Pipes FAQs
Common questions about stainless steel LSAW pipe grades, weld classes, dimensions, testing, and supply.
Why do stainless steel LSAW pipes follow ASTM A358?
ASTM A358 is the standard for fusion welded austenitic stainless steel pipe made from plate, which is exactly how LSAW pipes are built. It sets the weld classes, the tests, and the heat treatment.
Which ASTM A358 class should I order?
Class 1 gives the highest joint efficiency, because the pipe is welded on both sides and fully radiographed, so it suits critical lines. Class 5 uses spot radiography at a lower cost. Class 2 and Class 4 skip radiography and suit low-risk service.
Should I choose 304L or 316L for a large-diameter line?
Choose 304L for water, food, and mild chemicals. Choose 316L when the line sees chlorides, brine, or dilute acids. Both grades hold low carbon, which protects the weld zone.
When does duplex make more sense than 316L for a big pipe?
Duplex 2205 gives nearly twice the yield strength of 316L, so you can use a thinner wall on a large diameter and save weight and cost. It also resists chloride stress cracking much better.
Are the pipes solution annealed after welding?
Yes. We heat every pipe to 1,040°C or higher and cool it quickly, which restores corrosion resistance in the weld zone.
Which filler metal do you use?
We use filler metal that matches the pipe grade, such as 308L for 304L and 316L for 316L, so the weld keeps the same corrosion resistance as the plate.
Can you grind the weld flush inside the pipe?
Yes, on request. A flush inside surface gives smoother flow and fewer crevices where deposits can collect.
Can you supply non-standard diameters and walls?
Yes. Because we roll pipe from plate, we can form many diameters and walls to your drawing.
What sizes do your stainless steel LSAW pipes come in?
We make pipes from 8" to 48" OD, in walls from 3 mm to 25 mm. Larger sizes and heavier walls are available on request.
What decides the price of stainless steel LSAW pipes?
Nickel and molybdenum prices, plate grade, diameter, wall thickness, weld class, inspection scope, quantity, and delivery port all shape the price. Send us your enquiry for a current quote.
Which certificate comes with the pipes?
Every order ships with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate. We issue 3.2 with third-party inspection on request.
Are you a stainless steel LSAW pipes manufacturer or a supplier?
Both. We manufacture the pipes and also work as a stainless steel LSAW pipes supplier in India, with plate in
