What Are Nickel Alloy Inconel 601 Pipes and Tubes?
Nickel Alloy Inconel 601 Pipes and Tubes are made from a nickel-chromium alloy developed for equipment that operates at high temperatures and faces oxidation or corrosive conditions. The addition of aluminium helps form a protective oxide layer on the material’s surface, allowing it to resist scaling during prolonged exposure to heat. Also known as Alloy 601, this material carries the designation UNS N06601 and is valued for its heat resistance and mechanical strength.
These pipes and tubes are used in industrial furnaces, heat treatment equipment, chemical processing plants and thermal systems. Pipes commonly carry gases or fluids through process lines, while tubes are used in radiant tubes, heat exchangers and furnace components. Their ability to withstand elevated temperatures makes them suitable for applications that require reliable performance during continuous heating and repeated thermal cycles.

Nickel Alloy Inconel 601 Pipes and Tubes Mechanical and Physical Properties
| Property | Requirement (annealed) |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength | 550 MPa (80 ksi) min |
| Yield Strength (0.2% offset) | 205 MPa (30 ksi) min |
| Elongation | 30% min |
| Density | approx. 8.11 g/cm³ |
| Melting Range | approx. 1301 – 1411 °C |
| Thermal Expansion (20–100 °C) | approx. 13.8 µm/m·°C |
| Thermal Conductivity (20 °C) | approx. 11 W/m·K |
| Elastic Modulus | approx. 207 GPa |
| Magnetic Response | Non-magnetic at room temperature |
Thermal conductivity is low compared with carbon steel, so 601 tube heats and cools more slowly. This should be factored into furnace and exchanger design.
Nickel Alloy Inconel 601 vs 600 vs 800H: Choosing the Right Heat-Resistant Alloy
Buyers often compare these three, and the right pick depends on what is attacking the metal.
| Point | Inconel 601 | Inconel 600 | Alloy 800H |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nickel | 58 – 63% | 72% min | 30 – 35% |
| Chromium | 21 – 25% | 14 – 17% | 19 – 23% |
| Aluminium | 1.0 – 1.7% | None | 0.15 – 0.60% |
| Best At | Scale resistance in hot, cycling air | Corrosion plus heat, caustic, chlorides | Creep strength at high temperature |
| Approx. Air Limit | About 1200 °C | About 1100 °C | About 1100 °C |
| Relative Cost | High | High | Lower |
Pick 601 when scaling and thermal cycling are the main problem. Pick 600 when corrosion in caustic or chlorides matters as much as heat. Pick 800H when creep strength under load matters more, or when budget is tight.
High-Temperature Performance of Nickel Alloy Inconel 601 Pipes and Tubes
The aluminium-chromium scale on 601 stays attached through thermal shock, which is why furnace tubes made from it last through many cycles. It also resists carburization and nitriding well, and handles oxidizing, sulfur-bearing gases better than Alloy 600. For plain oxidation, a useful limit in air is around 1150–1200 °C.
There are limits. Strength drops quickly above about 800 °C, so 601 is chosen for scale resistance, not for heavy creep loads. Check creep data for your design temperature. Long exposure between about 550 and 750 °C can form precipitates that cost some room-temperature ductility, so handle equipment carefully after long service. Reducing sulfur atmospheres, especially above about 315 °C, still attack nickel alloys, so avoid them.
601 is not the right alloy for strong aqueous acids. For wet, highly corrosive service, Alloy 625 or C-276 are better picks.
Welding, Forming and Heat Treatment of Nickel Alloy Inconel 601 Pipes and Tubes
601 welds well with standard methods. A matching filler such as ERNiCrFe-11 is common, and the joint should be clean and free of sulfur, oil and marker paint before welding, since nickel alloys are sensitive to contamination. Keep heat input moderate and interpass temperature low.
Cold forming raises strength and hardness, so heavy bending usually needs a solution anneal afterwards. After welding or forming, pickle the surface to remove heat tint. Always follow a qualified welding procedure for your project.
