What Are Alloy Steel Seamless Tubes?

Alloy steel seamless tubes are tubular products made from alloy steel and formed without a welded seam. Alloying elements such as chromium, molybdenum, nickel, vanadium, and manganese are added to improve properties such as strength, heat resistance, toughness, and resistance to wear or corrosion. The seamless construction makes these tubes suitable for applications where reliable performance under pressure and temperature is important.

They are widely used in boilers, heat exchangers, power plants, oil & gas equipment, petrochemical systems, pressure vessels, and general engineering. Common grades include P5, P9, P11, P22, P91, P92, 16Mo3, and 4130. The appropriate grade and specification depend on the working temperature, pressure, fluid, tube dimensions, and applicable ASTM, ASME, or EN standard.

What Is the Difference Between Alloy Steel Seamless Tubes and Alloy Steel Seamless Pipes?

The short answer: tubes are sized by outside diameter and wall, with tight tolerances, and they are built to carry heat or fit machine parts. Pipes are sized by nominal pipe size and schedule, and they are built to carry fluid. A tube can be made in the same steel as a pipe, but the way you order it, test it and measure it is different.

For 16Mo3 under EN 10216-2, yield strength is 280 MPa minimum for walls up to 16 mm, tensile strength is 450–600 MPa and elongation is 22% minimum. For AISI 4130 and 4140, strength depends on the heat treatment you order.

Alloy Steel Seamless Tubes Size and Weight Chart

Weight depends on outside diameter and wall thickness. For carbon and low-alloy steel, we use this formula:

Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02466

OD and wall are in mm. Example: a 50.8 mm OD tube with a 3 mm wall weighs (50.8 − 3) × 3 × 0.02466 = 3.54 kg/m. Multiply by length for total weight.

Alloy Steel Seamless Tubes FAQs

Common questions about alloy steel seamless tube grades, dimensions, heat treatment, testing, and supply.

Which grade of Alloy Steel Seamless Tubes should I choose for a boiler?

For most boilers, pick T11 or T22. For very hot, high-pressure steam where creep strength matters, move to T91 or T92. For moderate heat, A209 T1 can save cost.

How do I choose between T11 and T22?

Look at the metal temperature and the fluid. T22 holds strength to a higher temperature and resists hydrogen better, while T11 costs less for moderate heat.

Can Alloy Steel Seamless Tubes be used for high-pressure service?

Yes. With no weld seam, the wall carries pressure evenly. Your design code sets the allowable stress and the wall thickness for the temperature.

Is heat treatment needed after bending or welding?

Often yes. Chrome-moly tubes usually need preheat and post-weld heat treatment, and T91 and T92 need tighter control than T11 or T22. Follow your approved welding procedure.

How do I weld Alloy Steel Seamless Tubes on site?

Use a matching filler metal, a low-hydrogen process and preheat as the procedure sets out. Check the interpass temperature as well, especially on T91 and T92.

What tolerances apply to OD and wall?

The product standard sets them. The tables above show typical A450 limits for cold-finished tubes. Hot-finished tubes carry wider limits.

What sizes can I order?

The chart above shows OD 19.05 to 114.3 mm in 2, 3 and 4 mm walls. Other sizes and walls can be quoted on request.

How do I calculate the weight of an order?

Use Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02466, with OD and wall in mm. Multiply by length and number of tubes. Real weight varies slightly with wall tolerance.

What affects the price of Alloy Steel Seamless Tubes?

Grade is the biggest factor, since chromium, molybdenum and vanadium move the cost. Size, wall, finish, quantity, testing, inspection and freight also count.

Which certificates come with the tubes?

Each order carries an EN 10204 3.1 certificate showing chemistry and mechanical results. A 3.2 certificate and third-party inspection are available on request.

Is every tube tested before it ships?

ASTM A213 requires a hydrostatic test or a non-destructive electric test on each tube, along with flattening and flaring tests. Tell us your preferred test when you enquire.

Are you a manufacturer or a supplier of Alloy Steel Seamless Tubes?

We are both. We manufacture near Mumbai and supply ready stock of popular sizes from the same location, subject to availability.

Can I order U-bent or special-shape tubes?

Send us your drawing and we will confirm what can be done. Straight tubes in standard sizes are the easiest to supply quickly.

Do you export Alloy Steel Seamless Tubes, and how do they ship?
