What Is the Difference Between Stainless Steel SSAW Pipes and Stainless Steel LSAW Pipes?
The difference is the starting material and the seam. SSAW pipes start as coil and carry a long spiral seam. LSAW pipes start as plate and carry one short straight seam. Coil costs less and arrives in long lengths, so SSAW pipes cost less and come in many diameters from a single coil width. Plate gives thicker walls, so LSAW pipes suit heavier duty. The spiral also lays the weld at an angle to the main hoop stress, so the seam takes less direct load, but the seam is longer and the mill must examine every metre of it.

Under ASME B31.3, a longitudinal or spiral weld normally earns 0.85, and full radiographic examination can raise it.
