Material and Grades of Stainless Steel 304 Pipes and Tubes

Stainless Steel 304 Pipes and Tubes are made from austenitic stainless steel containing chromium and nickel, which provide good corrosion resistance, strength and durability. As experienced Stainless Steel 304 Pipes and Tubes suppliers, we offer materials that meet different industrial and fabrication requirements.

The standard grade is SS 304 (UNS S30400), which is widely used in food processing, chemical equipment, heat exchangers and general piping systems.

SS 304: Offers good corrosion resistance, formability and weldability for everyday industrial applications.

SS 304L: A low-carbon variant suitable for welded applications where reduced carbide precipitation is important.

SS 304H: A higher-carbon variant designed for applications requiring improved strength at elevated temperatures.

Material selection depends on operating temperature, corrosion exposure, fabrication needs and applicable project specifications. Material test certificates help verify the supplied grade and chemical composition.

Stainless Steel 304 Pipes and Tubes: What Is the Difference?

The two grades look the same and weld the same way. The difference is in the chemistry and where each one survives.

Feature SS 304 SS 316
Chromium18.0–20.0%16.0–18.0%
Nickel8.0–11.0%10.0–14.0%
MolybdenumNone2.0–3.0%
Chloride resistanceModerateStrong

Choose 304 when the fluid is water, steam, food products, mild acids or air. Choose 316 when chlorides, brine or aggressive chemicals are present. Paying for molybdenum where it is not needed adds cost with no benefit.

Stainless Steel 304 Pipes and Tubes Size and Weight Chart

Weights are theoretical and calculated with the formula (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02491, giving kg per metre with dimensions in mm. Actual weight varies within the tolerance of the applicable standard.

Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02491

OD and wall are in mm. Multiply the result by the pipe or tube length to obtain the total weight.

FAQs

Common questions about SS 304 pipes and tubes, standards, finishes, testing and supply.

Which standard should I specify for SS 304 pipes?

ASTM A312 is the standard for pipe in seamless and welded form. Tubes for heat exchangers use A213 or A249, and general tubing uses A269.

Can you supply both seamless and welded SS 304 pipes?

Yes. We supply seamless, ERW and EFW pipes and tubes, and recommend the form based on pressure, size and budget.

Is SS 304 magnetic?

In the annealed state it is non-magnetic. Cold working can create slight magnetism, which does not affect corrosion resistance in normal service.

How is the weight of an SS 304 pipe calculated?

Use (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02491, with both values in mm, to get kg per metre. Multiply by the length for total weight.

Does SS 304 rust?

It resists rust in most environments. It can pit or stain in chloride-rich settings such as seawater, brine and some cleaning agents.

Can you supply custom lengths and non-standard sizes?

Yes. Cut lengths, odd OD and wall combinations and special ends are made to drawing or purchase specification.

What finishes are available?

Annealed and pickled, bright annealed, mill finish, 2B and polished finishes are available for pipes and tubes.

Which tests are done before dispatch?

Chemical analysis, mechanical tests, hydrostatic or eddy current testing, PMI and dimensional checks. IGC testing is available on request.

How is the material packed for export?

Pipes are bundled with end caps and wrapped in waterproof sheeting, then loaded in wooden cases or steel-strapped bundles. Tubes are placed in cartons or wooden crates with each lot marked for traceability.
