Sachiya Steel International is an ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and TÜV-certified, MSME-registered maker of ASTM A335 P5 Alloy Steel Pipes. We have been operating from Mumbai since 2005, with production at our Vasai facility. As an ASTM A335 P5 Alloy Steel Pipes Manufacturer in India, we supply refineries, power plants and petrochemical units in 85+ countries. P5 is a 5% chromium, ½% molybdenum seamless pipe made for hot service. It holds its strength under heat and resists scaling and sulfidation far better than plain carbon steel, at a lower price than P9 or stainless. Every pipe is made to ASTM A335 / ASME SA335 and ships with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate.
What Are ASTM A335 P5 Alloy Steel Pipes?
ASTM A335 P5 Alloy Steel Pipes are seamless ferritic alloy steel pipes designed for high-temperature service. Made from a 5% chromium and 0.5% molybdenum steel grade (UNS K41545), these pipes are used in boilers, industrial heaters, refineries, and process piping systems that operate under heat and pressure.
Chromium helps the pipes resist oxidation and sulfur-related corrosion, while molybdenum improves high-temperature strength and resistance to creep. Creep occurs when metal slowly deforms under constant stress at elevated temperatures. These properties make ASTM A335 P5 pipes suitable for demanding industrial applications where carbon steel may not provide the required heat resistance and long-term performance.

Why Choose ASTM A335 P5 Alloy Steel Pipes?
ASTM A335 P5 Alloy Steel Pipes are a practical choice for piping systems that handle high temperatures, pressure, and demanding process conditions. Their chromium-molybdenum composition helps them resist oxidation and sulfur-related attack, making them suitable for refinery equipment, boilers, industrial heaters, and petrochemical processing lines.
Another advantage is their ability to maintain useful strength during prolonged exposure to heat. Molybdenum helps improve resistance to creep, while chromium supports oxidation resistance. These properties make P5 pipes suitable for steam lines, heat exchangers, and other high-temperature systems where ordinary carbon steel may not meet service requirements.
The ASTM A335 specification also provides defined requirements for seamless ferritic alloy steel pipes used in high-temperature service. This helps engineers specify the appropriate material, dimensions, and testing requirements for their applications. The final choice should depend on operating temperature, pressure, corrosion conditions, and the applicable design code.

ASTM A335 P5 Alloy Steel Pipes Material and Grades
P5 is one grade in a family of chromium-molybdenum pipes. The number tells you roughly how much chromium it carries, and more chromium means more heat and sulfur resistance.
In ASTM A335, P5 has 4–6% chromium and 0.45–0.65% molybdenum. Related grades include P5b, which carries higher silicon (1.00–2.00%), and P5c. P5 sits above P11 and P22 in heat resistance and below P9 and P91, so it covers the middle ground where P22 starts to scale but P9 is more than the job needs.
If your drawing names P5 together with a Charpy or hardness requirement, tell us when you enquire so the heat can be chosen and tested for it.
ASTM A335 P5 vs P9 Alloy Steel Pipes
These two come up together more than any other pair. P9 is the step up, with nearly double the chromium and double the molybdenum, and that buys more oxidation and creep resistance at higher temperature.
| Point | ASTM A335 P5 | ASTM A335 P9 |
|---|---|---|
| Nominal Composition | 5Cr-½Mo | 9Cr-1Mo |
| UNS Number | K41545 | S50400 |
| Chromium | 4.00 – 6.00% | 8.00 – 10.00% |
| Molybdenum | 0.45 – 0.65% | 0.90 – 1.10% |
| Tensile / Yield (min) | 415 / 205 MPa | 415 / 205 MPa |
| Typical Upper Service Range | Around 600 °C | Around 650 °C |
| Relative Cost | Lower | Higher |
Pick P5 when your design temperature sits comfortably within its range and the process does not call for more. Pick P9 where temperatures push higher or the sulfidation risk is severe.
Elevated Temperature and Corrosion Performance of ASTM A335 P5 Alloy Steel Pipes
P5 is a creep-resistant steel. Under long heat and pressure, it keeps its shape better than plain carbon steel, and its chromium builds a protective scale that stands up to oxidation up to about 600 °C.
It also resists sulfidation, which is the attack by sulfur compounds in crude and refinery streams. For hot hydrogen service, 5Cr-½Mo is a recognised choice and sits higher on the Nelson curves than carbon steel.
Treat welding with care. P5 is air-hardening, so a weld that cools too fast can turn hard and crack. Preheat of roughly 200–300 °C and post-weld heat treatment of roughly 700–760 °C are normal, but follow your own welding procedure specification.
It is not stainless steel. In wet, salty or acidic conditions it will rust, so keep it painted or varnished in storage, and use stainless or duplex where corrosion, not heat, is the problem.
