What Are Alloy 20 Pipes?
Alloy 20 pipes are corrosion-resistant pipes made from UNS N08020, a nickel-iron-chromium alloy developed for handling aggressive chemical environments, especially sulphuric acid. The material is also known as 20Cb-3 and is commonly identified by EN material number 2.4660. Its combination of nickel, chromium, copper and molybdenum provides strong resistance to general corrosion, while niobium helps improve resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding.
Alloy 20 pipes are available in seamless and welded construction. Seamless pipes are produced from solid billets, while welded pipes are formed from plate or strip and welded before the required finishing and heat treatment. They can be supplied in different NPS sizes, schedules, wall thicknesses, lengths and finishes according to the applicable specification and project requirements.
Alloy 20 Pipes

| Property | Minimum value |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength | 551 MPa (80 ksi) |

Alloy 20 Pipes Size and Weight Chart
Weight depends on OD and wall thickness. Alloy 20 has a density of about 8.08 g/cm³, so we use this formula:
OD and wall are in mm. Example: NPS 2 Sch 40S is (60.3 − 3.91) × 3.91 × 0.02538 = 5.60 kg/m. Multiply by length for total weight. Walls for each schedule are listed in the next section.
| NPS | OD (mm) | Sch 10S (kg/m) | Sch 40S (kg/m) | Sch 80S (kg/m) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1/2" | 21.3 | 1.03 | 1.30 | 1.66 |
| 1" | 33.4 | 2.15 | 2.58 | 3.33 |
| 2" | 60.3 | 4.04 | 5.60 | 7.70 |
| 3" | 88.9 | 6.65 | 11.62 | 15.72 |
| 4" | 114.3 | 8.61 | 16.54 | 22.97 |
| 6" | 168.3 | 14.23 | 29.09 | 43.80 |
| 8" | 219.1 | 20.55 | 43.79 | 66.53 |
| 10" | 273.1 | 28.60 | 62.07 | 83.93 |
| 12" | 323.9 | 37.04 | 76.04 | 100.31 |
Available Sizes, Dimensions and Schedules
Alloy 20 Pipes follow ASME B36.19M for Sch 5S, 10S, 40S and 80S, and ASME B36.10M for Sch 160. A schedule is a wall-thickness code, so for the same OD a higher number means a thicker wall. Acid lines often run on the lighter schedules because Alloy 20 is strong, but confirm the wall against the design code and your corrosion allowance. Other sizes and walls can be quoted on request.
| NPS | OD (mm) | Sch 5S (mm) | Sch 10S (mm) | Sch 40S (mm) | Sch 80S (mm) | Sch 160 (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1/2" | 21.3 | 1.65 | 2.11 | 2.77 | 3.73 | 4.78 |
| 1" | 33.4 | 1.65 | 2.77 | 3.38 | 4.55 | 6.35 |
| 2" | 60.3 | 1.65 | 2.77 | 3.91 | 5.54 | 8.74 |

| 6" | 168.3 | 2.77 | 3.40 | 7.11 | 10.97 | 18.26 |
| 8" | 219.1 | 2.77 | 3.76 | 8.18 | 12.70 | 23.01 |
| 10" | 273.1 | 3.40 | 4.19 | 9.27 | 12.70 | 28.58 |
| 12" | 323.9 | 3.96 | 4.57 | 9.53 | 12.70 | 33.32 |
Tolerances on OD, wall and length follow ASTM B829 for seamless pipe and ASTM B775 for welded pipe, and they depend on pipe size.

Alloy 20 Pipes FAQs
Common questions about Alloy 20 pipe grades, acid service, welding, dimensions, and supply.
Which chemicals suit Alloy 20 pipes?
Alloy 20 is made for sulphuric acid and also handles phosphoric acid and many organic acids and mixed chemical streams. Check the iso-corrosion data for your exact concentration, temperature and impurities before you finalise the choice.
When should I choose Alloy 20 over 316L?
Choose Alloy 20 when sulphuric acid, hot acid or chloride cracking is attacking 316L. For mild service, 316L costs less and is often enough.
Should I order seamless or welded Alloy 20 pipe?
Seamless pipe suits pressure duty and critical acid lines. Welded pipe costs less, reaches larger diameters and has a shorter lead time.
Do I need post-weld heat treatment on Alloy 20?
Normally no. Niobium ties up the carbon, so the weld zone resists intergranular attack in the as-welded condition. Your fabrication procedure and design code still govern.
How should I weld Alloy 20 pipe?
Use TIG welding with a matching filler such as ER320LR, a clean joint and low heat input. Keep the joint free of oil, paint and marking ink.
Does Alloy 20 resist chloride stress corrosion cracking?
Yes. The high nickel content gives it much better resistance than the 300-series stainless steels. It is still not immune in every chloride environment, so check the conditions against your design basis.
What tolerances apply to OD and wall?
ASTM B829 sets them for seamless pipe and ASTM B775 for welded pipe. The limits depend on pipe size, and cold-drawn pipe holds tighter limits than hot-finished pipe.
What sizes and schedules can I order?
The tables above cover NPS 1/2 to 12 in Sch 5S, 10S, 40S, 80S and 160. Other sizes and walls can be quoted on request, and popular sizes sit in ready stock, subject to availability.
How do I calculate the weight of an order?
Use Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02538, with OD and wall in mm. Multiply by length and quantity. Real weight varies slightly with wall tolerance.
What affects the price of Alloy 20 Pipes?
Nickel, copper and molybdenum content set the base cost. Size, wall, seamless or welded form, finish, testing, quantity, inspection and freight also count.
Which certificates and tests come with the pipes?
Each order carries an EN 10204 3.1 certificate showing chemistry and mechanical results. A 3.2 certificate and third-party inspection are available on request.
Can you supply matching fittings and flanges?
Yes. Alloy 20 fittings to ASTM B366 and flanges to ASTM B462 can be supplied with the pipe, so the whole line has the same corrosion resistance.
Are you a manufacturer or a supplier of Alloy 20 Pipes?
We are both. We manufacture near Mumbai and supply ready stock of popular sizes from the same location, subject to availability.
Do you export Alloy 20 Pipes, and how are they packed?
Yes. We ship to 85+ countries from our Mumbai export office, and we pack the pipes to suit sea or air freight and your project needs.
