What Are Carbon Steel Seamless Pipes?

A carbon steel seamless pipe is a hollow pipe with no weld, made from steel whose strength comes mainly from carbon and manganese. In the grades on this page, carbon runs from about 0.25% to 0.35%, and the steel carries no deliberate alloy additions such as chromium or nickel. Indian buyers also call these pipes MS seamless pipes, CS seamless pipes, or black seamless pipes.

The mill makes them by piercing a hot billet and rolling it into a pipe, so the wall has the same strength all the way around. That combination gives you a pipe that is tough, easy to weld, easy to bend and fabricate, and much cheaper than alloy or stainless steel pipe.

Carbon steel has two limits that every one should know. It rusts, so it needs paint, coating, or a corrosion allowance in the wall. It also has a working temperature window. For long service above roughly 425°C, the steel can slowly lose strength through graphitization, and below about -29°C, ordinary grades can turn brittle. Above that window, designers move to chrome-moly pipe, and below it they move to ASTM A333.

Types of Carbon Steel Seamless Pipes

Carbon steel seamless pipes are available in different types depending on pressure, temperature, fluid, and the application. We manufacture and supply the following types for industrial and engineering requirements:

  • Pressure Seamless Pipes: Used for steam, oil, gas, and fluid service under pressure.
  • Line Pipes: Used to transport oil, gas, water, and other fluids through pipelines.
  • Boiler and Heat Exchanger Pipes: Used in boilers, condensers, heat exchangers, and power equipment.
  • Low-Temperature Pipes: ASTM A333 grades are suitable for applications where the pipe operates at low temperatures.
  • Structural Seamless Pipes: Used for construction, mechanical equipment, supports, and general engineering.
  • High-Temperature Pipes: Suitable grades are used in power plants and process equipment exposed to elevated temperatures.

With our experience as a carbon steel seamless pipes manufacturer, we supply these pipe types in different grades, sizes, wall thicknesses, and lengths according to the required standard and application.

ASTM A106 Gr. B Seamless Pipes, ASTM A53 Seamless Pipes, API 5L Seamless Line Pipes, ASTM A333 Low Temperature Pipes, Black and Galvanized Carbon Steel Pipes, Carbon Steel Seamless Pipes Manufacturers and Suppliers in India

We rank among the carbon steel seamless pipes manufacturers in India that buyers call when a shutdown date is fixed. Our yard near Mumbai holds popular sizes in SCH 40, SCH 80, and SCH 160, so a standard order can leave within days, and made-to-order pipes follow on a shorter lead time than most import routes.

For hot, high-pressure service, our ASTM A106 Gr. B and Gr. C pipes carry steam and process fluids in refineries and power plants. For general plant lines, ASTM A53 seamless pipes in black or galvanized finish cover water, air, and fire-fighting systems. When your project needs pipeline steel, our API 5L seamless line pipes in PSL1 and PSL2 run from Gr. B up to X70. For cold service, our ASTM A333 Gr. 6 pipes work down to -45°C, and Gr. 3 goes much lower.

As a carbon steel seamless pipes supplier, we treat the pipe and its paperwork as one product. Each length carries stencilled marks, a heat number that traces back to the mill test report, and a coating or protection level that matches your route to site.

Common Materials

Carbon steel is widely used for seamless pipes because it offers good strength, durability, weldability, and cost efficiency. Common grades include ASTM A106 Grade B, ASTM A53 Grade B, API 5L Grade B, X42, X52, and ASTM A333 Grade 6. Higher-strength grades can be selected when the application requires greater pressure or mechanical strength.

Low-temperature carbon steel grades such as ASTM A333 are used where impact toughness is important, while API 5L grades are commonly selected for pipeline applications. The suitable material depends on operating pressure, temperature, fluid, corrosion conditions, and the applicable design standard.

We work as carbon steel seamless pipes suppliers, providing different grades, sizes, wall thicknesses, lengths, and finishes according to project and application requirements.

What Is the Difference Between Carbon Steel, Alloy Steel and Stainless Steel Seamless Pipes?

The difference comes down to what is in the steel and what the pipe must survive. Carbon steel seamless pipes rely on carbon and manganese, so they are strong and cheap but they rust. Alloy steel seamless pipes add chromium and molybdenum, so they keep their strength at high temperature. Stainless steel seamless pipes carry at least 10.5% chromium, so they resist rust and chemicals but cost several times more per metre.

Pick carbon steel when the fluid is not corrosive and the temperature stays moderate. Pick alloy steel for hot steam and creep-prone service. Pick stainless steel when the fluid attacks carbon steel.

For weld planning, engineers use the carbon equivalent: CE = C + Mn/6 + (Cr + Mo + V)/5 + (Ni + Cu)/15. A value under about 0.43 welds easily without preheat, and a higher value calls for preheat and slower cooling. Because Gr. C carries more carbon and manganese than Gr. A or B, it usually needs the most careful welding.

To work out the weight of any size, use Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02466, with both values in mm. We supply larger sizes up to 24" NPS on request.

Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02466

Available Sizes, Dimensions and Schedules

A schedule is a wall-thickness code, and the same schedule gives a different wall in mm for each pipe size. That is why a 2" SCH 40 pipe and a 6" SCH 40 pipe do not share one wall. The outside diameter stays fixed for each NPS, so a thicker wall shrinks the bore and raises the pressure the pipe can carry.

We roll carbon steel seamless pipes from 1/8" to 24" NPS. Standard lengths are single random (16–22 ft) and double random (36–40 ft), and we cut 6 m, 12 m, or any custom length. As a carbon steel seamless pipes supplier in India, we hold the common schedules in ready stock, subject to availability.

Carbon Steel Seamless Pipes FAQs

Common questions about carbon steel seamless pipe grades, sizes, schedules, testing, and supply.

Which carbon steel seamless pipe grade is used the most?

ASTM A106 Gr. B leads because it balances strength, weldability, and price for steam, oil, and process lines up to high temperature.

What is the difference between ASTM A106 and ASTM A53 seamless pipes?

ASTM A106 covers only seamless pipe and is made for high-temperature service, with a minimum silicon content. ASTM A53 covers seamless and welded pipe for general service, so it suits water, air, and low-pressure lines.

How does ASTM A106 Gr. B differ from API 5L Gr. B?

The two grades have similar strength. A106 is written for high-temperature plant piping, and API 5L is written for pipelines, with PSL2 adding tighter chemistry and toughness tests.

What temperature can carbon steel seamless pipe handle?

Carbon steel works well up to about 425°C for long service and down to about -29°C for ordinary grades. Below that, use ASTM A333, and above that, use chrome-moly alloy steel pipe.

Do carbon steel seamless pipes rust?

Yes. Carbon steel rusts in air and water, so we supply pipes with oil, varnish, galvanizing, or 3LPE, FBE, and epoxy coatings depending on the service.

What is the difference between SCH 40 and SCH 80 pipe?

SCH 80 has a thicker wall than SCH 40 for the same NPS, so it carries higher pressure but weighs more and has a smaller bore.

What is the difference between carbon steel seamless and ERW pipes?

Seamless pipes have no weld and suit higher pressure and temperature. ERW pipes have one welded seam, cost less, and suit water, gas, and structural work.

What sizes do your carbon steel seamless pipes come in?

We supply pipes from 1/8" to 24" NPS in schedules from SCH 10 to XXS, plus custom walls on request.

Which certificate comes with the pipes?

Every order ships with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate. We issue 3.2 with third-party inspection on request.

Are you a carbon steel seamless pipes manufacturer or a supplier?

Both. We manufacture the pipes and also work as a carbon steel seamless pipes supplier in India, with ready stock of popular sizes.
