What Are Monel 400/K500 Seamless Pipes?
Monel 400/K500 Seamless Pipes are nickel-copper alloy pipes manufactured without a longitudinal welded seam, offering excellent corrosion resistance and reliable performance in demanding industrial environments. Monel 400 provides good resistance to seawater, marine atmospheres, and various chemical solutions, while Monel K500 combines similar corrosion resistance with higher strength and hardness through age hardening.
These pipes are used in marine engineering, chemical processing, oil and gas, offshore equipment, and other applications requiring durable materials. Monel 400 is commonly identified by UNS N04400, while Monel K500 is identified by UNS N05500. Depending on the product form and application, relevant material specifications may include ASTM B165 for nickel-copper alloy seamless pipe and tube. The appropriate grade should be selected according to operating conditions, pressure, temperature, dimensions, and applicable project requirements.

What Is the Difference Between Monel 400/K500 Seamless Pipes and Copper Nickel Seamless Pipes?
The short answer: Monel 400 and K500 are stronger than copper nickel, resist hydrofluoric acid and fast-flowing seawater far better and cost more. Copper nickel resists marine fouling and is cheaper, so it suits ordinary seawater piping. Choose nickel-copper for severe duty and copper nickel for routine seawater service.
| Factor | Monel 400/K500 Seamless Pipes | Copper Nickel Seamless Pipes (90/10, 70/30) |
|---|---|---|
| Base | About 63% nickel, 28 to 34% copper | 70 to 90% copper, 10 to 30% nickel |
| Strength | Higher, much higher in K500 | Lower |
| Seawater velocity limit | High | About 3.5 to 4.5 m/s |
| Marine fouling | Prone to growth | Resists growth |
| Hydrofluoric acid | Excellent resistance | Poor |
| Caustic and brine | Excellent | Good |
| Cost | Higher | Lower |
| Typical use | HF units, severe seawater, sour service | Ships, coastal cooling, desalination |
Monel 400/K500 Seamless Pipes Chemical Composition
Chemistry sets corrosion resistance and, in K500, the ability to age harden. The table shows the main elements. Values are percentage by weight, maximum unless shown as a range. A dash means no limit is set.
| Element | Alloy 400 (N04400) | Alloy K500 (N05500) |
|---|---|---|
| Nickel (Ni, incl. Co) | 63.0 min | 63.0 min |
| Copper (Cu) | 28.0–34.0 | 27.0–33.0 |
| Aluminium (Al) | — | 2.30–3.15 |
| Titanium (Ti) | — | 0.35–0.85 |
| Iron (Fe) | 2.5 | 2.0 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 2.0 | 1.5 |
| Carbon (C) | 0.30 | 0.25 |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.50 | 0.50 |
| Sulphur (S) | 0.024 | 0.01 |
Monel 400/K500 Seamless Pipes Mechanical Properties
Alloy 400 is sold in the annealed condition for most pipe. K500 gets most of its strength from age hardening, so its properties depend on heat treatment. The first table gives the ASTM B165 minimums for annealed Alloy 400.
| Alloy and condition | Tensile min, MPa (ksi) | Yield min, MPa (ksi) | Elongation min (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alloy 400, annealed | 485 (70) | 195 (28) | 35 |
For K500, typical annealed tensile strength is about 650 MPa. After age hardening, it typically rises above 1,000 MPa. The test results on your certificate show the actual values for the condition supplied. The second table gives typical physical properties.
| Property | Alloy 400 | Alloy K500 |
|---|---|---|
| Density | 8.80 g/cm³ | 8.44 g/cm³ |
| Melting range | 1300–1350°C | 1315–1350°C |
| Thermal conductivity | About 22 W/m·K | About 17.5 W/m·K |
| Thermal expansion (20–100°C) | About 13.9 µm/m·K | About 13.7 µm/m·K |
| Modulus of elasticity | About 180 GPa | About 180 GPa |
Monel 400/K500 Seamless Pipes Size and Weight Chart
Weight depends on OD and wall, and the wall depends on the schedule. The two alloys have different densities, so we use two constants:
OD and wall are in mm. Example: NPS 4 Sch 40S in Alloy 400 is (114.3 − 6.02) × 6.02 × 0.02765 = 18.02 kg/m. Walls for each schedule are listed in the next section.

Monel 400/K500 Seamless Pipes FAQs
Common questions about Alloy 400 and K500 selection, heat treatment, sour service, welding, and supply.
Which alloy should I choose, Alloy 400 or K500?
Choose Alloy 400 for piping in seawater, hydrofluoric acid, brine and caustic. Choose K500 when you need much higher strength, as in shafts and high-load parts, and accept the extra heat treatment.
Is Monel 400 the same as Alloy 400 or UNS N04400?
They name the same nickel-copper alloy. Monel is a trademark, and the UNS number defines the chemistry. We supply pipe to UNS N04400 and the standards named on your order.
What does age hardening do to K500?
Aging heats the alloy to about 590°C for several hours. Fine particles form in the metal and raise strength sharply. Machining and forming are easier before aging.
Can Alloy 400 be used with oxidising acids?
It is a poor choice for strongly oxidising acids such as nitric acid, and for fluids carrying oxidising salts. Check the fluid before you specify.
Can these pipes be used in sour service?
Alloy 400 and K500 can be used within the limits of NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, which set hardness, temperature and H2S limits. State the sour-service requirement when you enquire.
How do I weld Alloy 400 pipe?
Use a matching nickel-copper filler metal, a clean joint and a qualified procedure. Keep the joint free of sulphur, lead and other contaminants, which can cause cracking.
What tolerances apply to OD and wall?
ASTM B829 sets them. Tell us your limits at enquiry, and we will quote against them.
What sizes can I order?
The charts above cover NPS 1/2 to 12 in Sch 10S, 40S and 80S. Other sizes and walls can be quoted on request.
How do I calculate the weight of an order?
Use (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02765 for Alloy 400 or × 0.02652 for K500, with OD and wall in mm. Multiply by length and quantity. Real weight varies slightly with wall tolerance.
Are you a manufacturer or a supplier of Monel 400/K500 Seamless Pipes?
We are both. We manufacture near Mumbai and supply ready stock of popular sizes from the same location, subject to availability.
