Material and Grades of API 5L Grade B Carbon Steel Pipes

API 5L grades are named for strength. Grade A (L210) is the lowest, Grade B (L245) comes next, and the X grades follow: X42, X46, X52, X56, X60, X65, X70 and above. The number after X is the minimum yield strength in thousands of psi, so X42 has a minimum yield of 42,000 psi. Grade B is the only non-X grade above A, and its yield is about 35,500 psi.

Grade B is available at two product specification levels. PSL 1 is the basic level with standard chemistry and strength limits. PSL 2 adds tighter chemistry, a range on yield and tensile strength, mandatory impact testing and extra traceability.

Delivery condition matters too. PSL 1 pipe is supplied as-rolled or normalised. PSL 2 Grade B can be as-rolled (BR), normalised (BN), quenched and tempered (BQ) or thermomechanically rolled (BM). Tell us which your project calls for, since the condition affects both toughness and price.

Indicative Design Pressure of API 5L Grade B Carbon Steel Pipes

The table gives an indicative design pressure for common large sizes, using the hoop stress formula P = 2 × SMYS × t × F ÷ D, with a minimum yield (SMYS) of 245 MPa and a design factor F of 0.72, as used for liquid pipelines under ASME B31.4. It uses the nominal wall and no corrosion allowance. Gas pipelines under ASME B31.8 use design factors that depend on class location, and temperature and joint factors may also apply. Final design must be carried out by the project designer.

P = (2 × SMYS × t × F) ÷ D

P is design pressure, SMYS is specified minimum yield strength, t is nominal wall thickness, F is design factor and D is outside diameter. The values below are indicative only and must be verified against the applicable pipeline design code.

FAQs

Common questions about API 5L Grade B carbon steel pipes, PSL levels, coatings and supply.

How do PSL 1 and PSL 2 differ?

PSL 2 has tighter chemistry, a range on strength, a carbon equivalent limit and mandatory Charpy impact and weld NDT. PSL 1 is the basic level for general service.

Is API 5L Grade B the same as A106 Grade B or A53 Grade B?

Not exactly. The strength is similar, but each standard has its own rules on manufacture, testing and use. API 5L is for pipelines, A106 for hot seamless service and A53 for general use.

How is Grade B named in ISO 3183?

It is called L245, where the number is the minimum yield strength in MPa. The grade also appears as L245N, L245M or L245Q in some delivery conditions.

How do I calculate the weight of API 5L pipe?

Use (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02466, with both values in mm, to get kg per metre. Multiply by length for total weight.

How is the hydrostatic test carried out?

Each length is pressure tested to the value given in API 5L for its size, wall and grade, and held for the required time. The results are recorded on the certificate.

What end finish is used for field welding?

Beveled ends with a 30-degree bevel are standard for butt welding. We can also supply plain ends or threaded and coupled ends on small sizes.

Which coatings can you supply?

Pipe can be supplied black, varnished, primed, epoxy coated or 3LPE coated, depending on your service. Tell us your coating specification at enquiry.

Can pipe be dual certified?

Yes, where the chemistry and properties meet each standard. Pipe can often be certified to API 5L Grade B together with A53 Grade B and A106 Grade B. Tell us at enquiry.

What lengths are available?

Standard random lengths are R1 (about 4.9 to 7.6 m) and R2 (about 10.7 to 13.7 m). We also cut to fixed length on request.

Which documents come with an order?

EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates are included. Inspection reports and third-party certificates are available on request.

How is API 5L pipe packed for export?

Pipes are bundled with end caps and strapped, with a protective coating applied where needed. Heat numbers are marked on each pipe or bundle for traceability.
