What Are Stainless Steel 904L Pipes?

Stainless Steel 904L Pipes are pipes made from a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel, UNS N08904, with about 25% nickel, 20% chromium, 4.5% molybdenum and 1.5% copper. It sits in the group called super-austenitic stainless steels, a step above 316L in alloy content.

Nickel and molybdenum give it strong resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride fluids. Copper gives it unusual resistance to sulphuric acid. Its carbon content is very low, so it resists attack at welds. The pipe can be seamless or welded, and both are solution annealed, then pickled to a clean surface. 904L is non-magnetic, as austenitic steels are.

What Is the Difference Between Stainless Steel 904L Pipes and Stainless Steel 316L Pipes?

The short answer: 904L has about twice the nickel and molybdenum of 316L, plus copper. That gives it far better resistance to sulphuric acid and to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion. It also costs much more, so 316L stays the choice for milder duty.

Stainless Steel 904L Pipes Size and Weight Chart

Weight depends on OD and wall, and the wall depends on the schedule. 904L has a density of about 8.00 g/cm³, so we use this formula:

Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02513

OD and wall are in mm. Example: NPS 3 Sch 10S is (88.9 − 3.05) × 3.05 × 0.02513 = 6.58 kg/m. The next section lists the wall for each schedule.

Available Sizes, Dimensions and Schedules

Stainless Steel 904L Pipes follow the schedules of ASME B36.19M. The chart above covers NPS 1/2 to 12, and other sizes and walls can be quoted on request. Because 904L is costly, many designs use thin walls such as Sch 5S and 10S. Your engineer should confirm the wall against the design code. The table gives the wall for each schedule.

Stainless Steel 904L Pipes FAQs

Common questions about 904L pipe applications, material selection, welding, dimensions, and supply.

Which fluids is 904L best for?

It is best for sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, acetic acid and chloride-bearing fluids that corrode 316L. Always check the acid strength and temperature against corrosion data for your case.

How do I choose between 904L and 316L?

Choose 316L for mild chloride and general process duty. Choose 904L when 316L pits, or when sulphuric or phosphoric acid is present, and accept the higher cost.

How does 904L compare with duplex 2205?

Both have a PREN near 35. Duplex 2205 is stronger and costs less, but 904L resists sulphuric acid better and has no ferrite, so it suits acid duty. Duplex suits chloride cracking and high-pressure duty.

How should I weld 904L pipe?

Use a matching filler such as ER385, or an over-alloyed nickel filler, with low heat input and a qualified procedure. Post-weld heat treatment is not normally needed, and the joint should be pickled and passivated.

Can 904L be used at high temperature?

It is made mainly for corrosion service at moderate temperature. Long exposure between roughly 600°C and 900°C can form brittle phases, so check the limit with your design code.

Why is pickling and passivation needed?

Pickling removes heat tint and scale, and passivation restores the protective surface film. Both help the pipe resist corrosion from the first day in service.

What tolerances apply to OD and wall?

ASTM A999 sets them. The wall may run up to 12.5% under nominal, and OD limits depend on the pipe size.

What sizes can I order?

The charts above cover NPS 1/2 to 12 in Sch 5S, 10S, 40S and 80S. Larger sizes in welded form and other walls can be quoted on request.

How do I calculate the weight of an order?

Use Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02513, with OD and wall in mm. Multiply by length and quantity. Real weight varies slightly with wall tolerance.

What affects the price of Stainless Steel 904L Pipes?

Nickel and molybdenum prices set most of the cost. Size, wall, form (seamless or welded), testing, inspection, quantity and freight also count.
