What Are Corten Steel Pipes?
Corten steel pipes are pipes made from weathering steel, a type of low-alloy steel that naturally develops a protective rust-like surface when exposed to outdoor weather. This layer, called a patina, helps protect the steel from further corrosion and gives the pipe its well-known brown, weathered appearance.
The steel contains small amounts of copper, chromium, nickel, and phosphorus, which help the protective surface form and stay attached to the pipe. Unlike ordinary rust, the patina is more stable and slows down further corrosion. Corten steel pipes are also stronger than standard mild steel and are commonly used for bridges, buildings, outdoor structures, landscaping, towers, and industrial projects where durability and a natural weathered finish are required.

What Is the Difference Between Corten Steel Pipes and Mild Steel Pipes?
The short answer: Corten steel forms a protective rust layer and needs no paint in most open-air uses, while mild steel rusts steadily and needs paint or galvanising. Corten also has higher strength, but it costs more and does not suit constant wetness, buried service or heavy salt exposure.
| Point | Corten Steel Pipes | Mild Steel Pipes |
|---|---|---|
| Alloying | Copper, chromium, nickel, phosphorus | Little or none |
| Rust behaviour | Forms a tight, protective patina | Forms loose, flaking rust |
| Painting | Not needed in most open-air uses | Needed for lasting protection |
| Minimum yield | About 345 MPa | About 235 MPa |
| Maintenance | Low | Repainting at intervals |
| Constant wetness or soil contact | Not suitable | Painted or coated |
| Heavy salt exposure | Needs careful review | Painted or coated |
| Cost | Higher | Lower |
| Common standards | ASTM A588, A242, A847, EN 10025-5 | ASTM A53, A106, EN 10210 |
| Typical use | Bridges, façades, towers, landscape | General fabrication, piping |

Values apply to walls up to 19 mm for ASTM A242, 100 mm for ASTM A588, and 16 mm for the EN grades. Thicker walls carry slightly lower minimum yield values under each standard.
Corten Steel Pipes Size and Weight Chart
Weight depends on OD and wall thickness. Weathering steel has a density of about 7.85 g/cm³, so we use this formula:
OD and wall are in mm. Example: NPS 2 Sch 40 is (60.3 − 3.91) × 3.91 × 0.02466 = 5.44 kg/m. Multiply by length for total weight. Walls for each schedule are listed in the next section.
| NPS | OD (mm) | Sch 10 (kg/m) | Sch 40 (kg/m) | Sch 80 (kg/m) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1/2" | 21.3 | 1.00 | 1.27 | 1.62 |
| 1" | 33.4 | 2.09 | 2.50 | 3.24 |
| 2" | 60.3 | 3.93 | 5.44 | 7.48 |
| 3" | 88.9 | 6.46 | 11.29 | 15.27 |
| 4" | 114.3 | 8.37 | 16.07 | 22.32 |
| 6" | 168.3 | 13.83 | 28.26 | 42.56 |
| 8" | 219.1 | 19.97 | 42.55 | 64.64 |
Available Sizes, Dimensions and Schedules
Corten Steel Pipes follow ASME B36.10M for Sch 10, 40 and 80, and other ODs and walls can be made to your drawing. Architects and structural designers often order round pipes by OD and wall in mm, so quote the size either way. A schedule is a wall-thickness code, so for the same OD a higher number means a thicker wall. Confirm the wall against your structural design code.
| NPS | OD (mm) | Sch 10 (mm) | Sch 40 (mm) | Sch 80 (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1/2" | 21.3 | 2.11 | 2.77 | 3.73 |
| 1" | 33.4 | 2.77 | 3.38 | 4.55 |
| 2" | 60.3 | 2.77 | 3.91 | 5.54 |
| 3" | 88.9 | 3.05 | 5.49 | 7.62 |
| 4" | 114.3 | 3.05 | 6.02 | 8.56 |
| 6" | 168.3 | 3.40 | 7.11 | 10.97 |
| 8" | 219.1 | 3.76 | 8.18 | 12.70 |
Tolerances on OD, wall and length follow the product standard and depend on pipe size. Tell us if your drawing calls for closer limits.

Corten Steel Pipes FAQs
Common questions about Corten steel pipe grades, patina formation, coastal exposure, welding, and supply.
Which Corten standard should I choose?
Choose ASTM A588 for bridges and buildings built to US codes, and EN 10025-5 S355J2W for European projects. ASTM A847 is the tubing standard for pipes, and ASTM A242 suits lighter structural use. Follow your project specification.
How does Corten steel form its protective layer?
The alloying elements help rust build up as a dense, tightly bonded layer during repeated wet and dry cycles. That layer slows oxygen and water from reaching the steel underneath.
Do Corten steel pipes need painting?
Not in most open-air uses, because the patina protects the steel. Paint is optional for colour or for harsh areas, and a coating system must be chosen for weathering steel.
Can Corten steel be used near the coast?
Use caution. Chloride from salt spray can stop the patina from sealing properly. Check the exposure against ISO 9223 and ASTM G101, and ask your designer to confirm the grade and coating.
Does rust run-off stain nearby surfaces?
Yes, especially in the first year or two. Plan drainage and protect adjacent concrete, stone and paving from rust run-off.
How should I weld Corten steel pipes?
Use a weathering filler metal matched to the steel, such as E8018-W2 electrodes or ER80S-Ni1 wire, with a clean joint and the preheat your procedure requires. Matching filler keeps the weld's colour and weathering behaviour close to the pipe.
What sizes and schedules can I order?
The tables above cover NPS 1/2 to 8 in Sch 10, 40 and 80. Other sizes and walls can be quoted on request, and popular sizes sit in ready stock, subject to availability.
How do I calculate the weight of an order?
Use Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02466, with OD and wall in mm. Multiply by length and quantity. Real weight varies slightly with wall tolerance.
Are you a manufacturer or a supplier of Corten Steel Pipes?
We are both. We manufacture near Mumbai and supply ready stock of popular sizes from the same location, subject to availability.
