What Are Alloy Steel ERW Pipes?
Alloy Steel ERW Pipes are pipes made from alloy steel strip that is rolled into a round shape and sealed along one seam by electric resistance welding. In this process, high-frequency current heats the strip edges. Rollers then press the hot edges together, so no filler metal is added.
“Alloy” means the steel carries extra elements such as nickel, chromium, molybdenum or copper. Nickel keeps the steel tough in the cold. Molybdenum keeps it strong when hot. Chromium adds hardness and wear resistance. After welding, the seam is heat treated, so the weld zone behaves like the rest of the pipe.

What Is the Difference Between Alloy Steel ERW Pipes and Alloy Steel Seamless Pipes?
The short answer: ERW pipe is made from rolled strip and has one welded seam, while seamless pipe is pierced from a solid billet and has no seam. ERW pipe costs less and has very even wall thickness. Seamless pipe is the choice for very heavy walls and for high-pressure, high-temperature duty.
| Point | Alloy Steel ERW Pipes | Alloy Steel Seamless Pipes |
|---|---|---|
| Starting material | Alloy steel strip | Solid billet |
| Seam | One longitudinal weld, heat treated | None |
| Wall thickness | Very uniform | Can vary more along the length |
| Heavy walls | Limited at the thick end | Available in very heavy walls |
| Pressure design | Piping codes apply a weld joint factor | No weld joint factor |
| Cost and lead time | Usually lower and faster | Usually higher and longer |
| Chrome-moly grades (A335 P11, P22, P91) | Not covered, A335 is seamless only | Covered |
| Best fit | Cold service, moderate pressure, mechanical tubing | High-pressure, high-temperature and heavy-wall lines |
Alloy Steel ERW Pipes Chemical Composition

Alloy Steel ERW Pipes Size and Weight Chart
The weight of Alloy Steel ERW Pipes depends on outside diameter and wall thickness. We calculate it with this formula for carbon and low-alloy steel:
OD and wall are in mm. Example: NPS 4, Sch 40 is (114.3 − 6.02) × 6.02 × 0.02466 = 16.07 kg/m. Multiply by the pipe length for total weight.

Available Sizes, Dimensions and Schedules
Alloy Steel ERW Pipes follow the ASME B36.10M dimension series. NPS 1/2 to 12 appears in the chart above, and other sizes can be quoted on request. Schedule means a standard wall thickness for each nominal size. A higher schedule number means a thicker wall. Very heavy walls, such as Sch 160 on large sizes, are usually better made seamless.

Alloy Steel ERW Pipes FAQs
Common questions about alloy steel ERW pipe grades, sizes, testing, dimensions, and supply.
Which grade of Alloy Steel ERW Pipes should I pick for service near −100°C?
Choose ASTM A333 Grade 3 or Grade 7. Both are impact tested at −101°C. For milder cold down to about −73°C, Grade 9 usually costs less.
How do I choose between A333 and 16Mo3 pipes?
Look at the main problem. If the line is cold and needs notch toughness, pick A333. If the line runs hot under pressure, pick 16Mo3 under EN 10217-2.
Can Alloy Steel ERW Pipes be used for high-pressure lines?
Yes, within limits. Piping codes such as ASME B31.3 apply a weld joint factor to welded pipe, so allowable pressure can be lower than for seamless pipe of the same size and wall. Your designer should check the code against your design pressure.
Is the weld seam heat treated?
Yes. Welded A333 pipe must be heat treated after welding, by normalising or normalising and tempering. This keeps the weld zone as tough as the pipe body.
How should I weld or bend alloy steel ERW pipes on site?
Use a filler metal that matches the grade, a low-hydrogen process and a written welding procedure. Nickel and chrome-moly steels also need preheat and, in some cases, post-weld heat treatment. Follow the procedure your welding engineer approves.
What tolerances apply to the pipe size and wall?
ASTM A999 sets the limits. OD tolerance depends on the nominal size, for example ±0.8 mm for NPS over 1-1/2 up to 4, and wall may run up to 12.5% under nominal.
What sizes and schedules can I order?
The chart above covers NPS 1/2 to 12 in Sch 10, Sch 40 and Sch 80. Other sizes and walls can be quoted on request. For very thick walls, ask us about seamless pipe.
How do I calculate the weight of an order?
Use Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02466, with OD and wall in mm. Multiply by pipe length and number of pieces for the total. Real weight varies slightly with wall tolerance.
What affects the price of Alloy Steel ERW Pipes?
Grade is the biggest factor, because nickel content moves the cost. Wall thickness, quantity, heat treatment, impact testing, third-party inspection, end finish and freight to your port also count.
Which certificates come with the pipes?
Each order carries an EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate showing chemistry and mechanical results. A 3.2 certificate and third-party inspection are available on request.
Is every pipe tested before it ships?
ASTM A333 requires each length to pass a hydrostatic test or a non-destructive electric test. Tell us which one you prefer when you send your enquiry.
Are you a manufacturer or a supplier of Alloy Steel ERW Pipes?
We are both. We manufacture at our facility near Mumbai and supply ready stock of popular sizes from the same location, subject to availability.
Can Chrome-moly grades like P11 and P22 be supplied as ERW pipe?
No. ASTM A335 covers seamless pipe only. For chrome-moly service at high temperature, choose seamless. For ERW at moderate temperatures, 16Mo3 is the usual route.
Do you export Alloy Steel ERW Pipes, and how do they ship?
Yes. We export to 85+ countries from our Mumbai export office, and we pack the pipes to suit sea or air freight and your project needs.
