What Are ASTM A335 P91 Alloy Steel Pipes?
ASTM A335 P91 Alloy Steel Pipes are seamless alloy steel pipes designed for high-temperature and high-pressure applications. Made from modified 9Cr-1Mo steel (UNS K90901), these pipes contain chromium and molybdenum, along with small amounts of vanadium, niobium and nitrogen to improve their strength and heat resistance.
These added elements help the steel maintain its structure under high temperatures and heavy loads. As a result, P91 pipes offer excellent creep strength, which helps prevent gradual deformation during long periods of heat and pressure. Classified as creep-strength-enhanced ferritic (CSEF) steel, they are widely used in power plants, boilers and other industrial systems that require reliable performance under demanding operating conditions.

ASTM A335 P91 Alloy Steel Pipes Standards
| Standard | Why It Matters for P91 |
|---|---|
| ASTM A335 / ASME SA335 | The base standard, covering chemistry, heat treatment and testing |
| ASTM A999 | Adds general rules on tolerances, marking and inspection |
| ASME B36.10M | Fixes the pipe sizes and wall thicknesses |
| ASTM A213 (T91) | The tube version for boiler tubing and heat exchangers |
| ASTM A234 WP91 | Butt-weld fittings in the same alloy |
| ASTM A182 F91 | Forged flanges and fittings in the same alloy |
| ASTM A387 Gr 91 | Plate grade, used where pipe is fabricated from plate |
| ASTM A691 (91) | Fusion welded pipe from plate, for very large sizes |
| EN 10216-2 | European seamless pressure pipe standard for X10CrMoVNb9-1 |
Every lot is tested for chemistry, tensile strength, hardness and flattening, then proven with a hydrostatic test or non-destructive examination as the code demands. Hardness matters more on P91 than on other chrome-moly pipe, because it shows whether the heat treatment did its job. Positive material identification checks the alloy on the finished pipe, and a third-party inspector can witness the work.
ASTM A335 P91 Alloy Steel Pipes Material and Grades
P91 sits at the top of the standard A335 ladder in strength, and it is the grade most modern boiler designs are built around. ASTM A335 limits carbon to 0.08–0.12% and sets 8.00–9.50% chromium, 0.85–1.05% molybdenum, 0.18–0.25% vanadium and 0.06–0.10% niobium, with 0.030–0.070% nitrogen.
The small amounts of vanadium, niobium and nitrogen are the secret. Take them out and you are left with P9, which is a good pipe, but much weaker at heat.
Both Type 1 and Type 2 chemistries appear in the standard. If your specification names one, tell us when you enquire, so we can supply the right heat with the right records.
ASTM A335 P91 Alloy Steel Pipes Chemical Composition

ASTM A335 P91 Alloy Steel Pipes Size and Weight Chart
Weight per metre = (OD − wall) × wall × 0.02466, with OD and wall in mm. Treat the figures as estimates, because the wall tolerance moves the real weight.
OD and wall are in mm. Multiply the result by the pipe length to obtain the total weight.
| NPS | OD (mm) | Sch 80 | Sch 120 | Sch 160 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4" | 114.3 | 22.32 kg/m (8.56 mm) | 28.32 kg/m (11.13 mm) | 33.54 kg/m (13.49 mm) |
| 6" | 168.3 | 42.56 kg/m (10.97 mm) | 54.20 kg/m (14.27 mm) | 67.56 kg/m (18.26 mm) |
| 8" | 219.1 | 64.64 kg/m (12.70 mm) | 90.44 kg/m (18.26 mm) | 111.27 kg/m (23.01 mm) |
| 10" | 273.1 | 96.01 kg/m (15.09 mm) | 133.06 kg/m (21.44 mm) | 172.33 kg/m (28.58 mm) |
| 12" | 323.9 | 132.09 kg/m (17.48 mm) | 186.97 kg/m (25.40 mm) | 238.76 kg/m (33.32 mm) |
P91 steam lines often run in these heavier schedules. For other sizes and walls, we can share a complete weight chart on request.
ASTM A335 P91 vs P92 Alloy Steel Pipes
P92 is the closest alternative, and the choice usually comes down to how much more strength your design needs.
P92 starts from the same 9% chromium base but adds tungsten and reduces molybdenum. It reaches higher strength, with a minimum tensile of 620 MPa against 585 MPa for P91, and a minimum yield of 440 MPa against 415 MPa. That lets designers go a little thinner still on hot, high-pressure lines.
P91 has a much longer record in service and is the more widely stocked and specified grade. For most power plants and refineries, it gives all the strength required at a lower cost and with simpler sourcing. Choose P92 when the design runs at the top of the temperature range and every millimetre of wall counts.
Elevated Temperature and Corrosion Performance of ASTM A335 P91 Alloy Steel Pipes
P91 is built for hot steam. It is normally used in the range of about 540–620 °C, where its creep strength beats P22 by a wide margin. Higher strength means thinner walls for the same pressure, which cuts weight, lowers thermal stress and helps plants that cycle on and off.
Its 9% chromium gives good resistance to oxidation and steam scaling, so inner and outer surfaces last well in service.
The care goes into fabrication. P91 only performs as intended when it is normalized and tempered correctly, and a weld that is under-tempered or over-heated loses strength. Preheat of about 200–250 °C and post-weld heat treatment of about 740–780 °C are typical, with hardness checked afterwards and the temperature kept below the lower critical point. Your welding procedure specification and code have the final word.
Welded joints in P91 can also suffer a type of cracking in the fine-grained zone beside the weld, known as Type IV cracking. Good procedure control and correct tempering are the best defence.
P91 is not stainless. It will rust in damp air, so keep it coated until installation, and choose stainless or duplex where corrosion, rather than heat, is the problem.
ASTM A335 P91 Alloy Steel Pipes Sizes, Dimensions and Schedules
P91 pipe is supplied from ½" up to 24" NB. Because P91 is strong, designers can often choose a lighter wall than they would need in P22, so it is worth running your wall calculation to the code before ordering. Heavier schedules up to XXS serve high-pressure headers and large main steam lines.
Where standard sizes do not fit, we can make odd OD and wall pairs to your drawing. Pipes ship in single random, double random or cut lengths, with plain or beveled ends. A coat of varnish or paint goes on before dispatch, which keeps rust off during transport and yard storage.
