API 5L X42 Carbon Steel Pipes Manufacturer in India
API 5L X42 Carbon Steel Pipes Manufacturer in India
Sachiya Steel International is an ISO 9001:2015 and TÜV-certified API 5L X42 Carbon Steel Pipes Manufacturer in India, established in 2005. X42 is a line pipe grade with a minimum yield strength of 290 MPa and a minimum tensile strength of 415 MPa, about 18% stronger in yield than Grade B. That strength allows thinner walls and lighter pipelines at the same pressure. Every order comes with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate.
We supply seamless and welded X42 pipe to PSL 1 and PSL 2, from ⅛ inch to 24 inches and larger on request. Each length is hydrostatically tested to API 5L, with tensile, flattening or bend and chemistry checks tied to its heat number, and PSL 2 pipe also receives Charpy impact testing. We ship to buyers in 85+ countries. Send us your size, wall, PSL level and delivery condition, and we will quote to your specification.
What Are API 5L X42 Carbon Steel Pipes?
API 5L X42 Carbon Steel Pipes are line pipes manufactured according to API 5L specifications for transporting oil, natural gas, and water in pipeline systems. Grade X42 offers a minimum yield strength of 42,000 psi (approximately 290 MPa), making it suitable for pipeline applications that require moderate strength and reliable performance. These pipes are available in seamless and welded forms, depending on project requirements, and can be supplied in different sizes, wall thicknesses, and finishes. Their strength and versatility make them a common choice for oil and gas transportation, energy infrastructure, and industrial pipeline projects.

Material and Grades of API 5L X42 Carbon Steel Pipes
API 5L grades are named for strength. Grade B (L245) is the base, and the X grades follow: X42, X46, X52, X56, X60, X65, X70 and above. In each case the number is the minimum yield strength in thousands of psi. X42 is the first of the X grades, so it sits just above Grade B.
X42 is available at two product specification levels. PSL 1 is the basic level with standard chemistry and strength limits. PSL 2 adds tighter chemistry, a range on yield and tensile strength, mandatory impact testing and extra traceability.
Delivery condition matters too. PSL 1 pipe is supplied as-rolled or normalised. PSL 2 X42 can be as-rolled (R), normalised (N), quenched and tempered (Q) or thermomechanically rolled (M). Tell us which your project calls for, since it affects both toughness and price.
If your line carries sour fluids, tell us at enquiry. PSL 2 pipe can be supplied to the sour service requirements of API 5L and NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, subject to confirmation of the grade, process and testing for your project.
API 5L X42 vs Grade B vs X52 Pipes: Which Grade Do You Need?
| Point | Grade B | X42 | X52 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum yield strength | 245 MPa | 290 MPa | 360 MPa |
| Minimum tensile strength | 415 MPa | 415 MPa | 460 MPa |
| Wall saving against Grade B, same pressure | – | About 15% | About 32% |
| Weldability | Easiest | Very good | Good, needs closer control |
| Cost | Lowest | Moderate | Higher |
| Typical use | Water, plant and low-pressure lines | Gathering lines, flowlines, water transmission | Higher-pressure transmission lines |
Choose X42 when you want more strength than Grade B without moving to the cost and welding care of X52. Choose Grade B for low-pressure and plant piping. Choose X52 or higher for long, high-pressure transmission lines where the wall saving justifies the cost.

Indicative Design Pressure of API 5L X42 Carbon Steel Pipes
The table gives an indicative design pressure for common large sizes, using the hoop stress formula P = 2 × SMYS × t × F ÷ D, with a minimum yield (SMYS) of 290 MPa and a design factor F of 0.72, as used for liquid pipelines under ASME B31.4. It uses the nominal wall and no corrosion allowance. Gas pipelines under ASME B31.8 use design factors that depend on class location, and temperature and joint factors may also apply. Final design must be carried out by the project designer.
P is design pressure, SMYS is specified minimum yield strength, t is nominal wall thickness, F is design factor and D is outside diameter. The values below are indicative only and must be verified against the applicable pipeline design code.

API 5L X42 Carbon Steel Pipes Sizes, Dimensions and Tolerances
Line pipe is ordered by outside diameter, wall thickness and length. Small sizes follow ASME B36.10M schedules, while large sizes are ordered by OD and wall in mm or inches. Because X42 is stronger than Grade B, walls are often a step thinner for the same design pressure.
| Size range | Common wall (mm) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| NPS 2 to 6 | Sch 40 to Sch 80 | Plant, gathering and utility lines |
| NPS 8 to 12 | 6.35 to 14.27 | Gathering lines, flowlines and process piping |
| NPS 16 to 24 | 7.92 to 19.05 | Pipelines and water mains |
| NPS 30 and above | 9.53 to 25.4 | Transmission lines and large-diameter water mains |
Typical outside diameter and wall tolerances under API 5L are below.
| Item | Tolerance |
|---|---|
| Pipe body OD up to 60.3 mm | ±0.4 mm |
| Pipe body OD above 60.3 mm up to 610 mm | ±0.75% |

| Tensile test | Confirms yield strength, tensile strength and elongation against the X42 minimums |
| Flattening or guided bend test | Shows the pipe and its weld deform without cracking |
| Chemical analysis | Checks heat and product chemistry against the PSL limits |

| Weld seam NDT | Ultrasonic or other NDT of the weld on welded PSL 2 pipe |
| Dimensional check | Measures OD, wall, length, straightness and out-of-roundness |
| Visual inspection | Looks for surface defects, laps, seams and dents |
| Third-party inspection | On request, to your inspection and test plan |
Welding and Field Joining of API 5L X42 Carbon Steel Pipes
X42 welds well with the same methods used on other pipeline grades. Most pipelines are joined under API 1104, which sets rules for welder qualification, procedure and testing.
Low-hydrogen processes and consumables are the usual choice, and cellulosic electrodes are often used for root passes in the field. Preheat is rarely needed on thin and medium walls in mild weather, but heavier walls, cold conditions and high joint restraint can call for it. PSL 2 pipe has a carbon equivalent limit, which keeps hardness in the heat-affected zone under control.
Beveled ends are standard for butt welding. If you need a particular bevel angle, root face or land, tell us in your enquiry and we will prepare the ends to match.
Coatings and Finishes of API 5L X42 Carbon Steel Pipes
