What Are Carbon Steel Heat Exchanger Tubes?

Carbon steel heat exchanger tubes are tubular components that transfer heat between two fluids without allowing them to mix. They are installed inside shell and tube heat exchangers, where one fluid flows through the tubes while another moves around them inside the shell. Heat passes through the tube wall, allowing the equipment to heat or cool the process fluid efficiently.

These tubes need accurate dimensions, suitable wall thickness, clean internal surfaces, and reliable mechanical properties to work properly with the tubesheet and withstand operating conditions. Common specifications include ASTM A179, ASTM A214, ASTM A192, ASTM A210, and ASTM A334, with the appropriate grade selected according to temperature, pressure, and service requirements.

Types of Carbon Steel Heat Exchanger Tubes

Carbon steel heat exchanger tubes come in different forms depending on the exchanger design, operating conditions, and installation requirements. The tube material, manufacturing process, dimensions, and finish all affect how well the tubes perform during heat transfer and service.

  • Seamless Heat Exchanger Tubes: Made without a welded seam and commonly selected for applications involving higher pressure or demanding service conditions.
  • Welded Heat Exchanger Tubes: Produced by forming and welding steel strip, offering a practical option for many standard heat transfer applications.
  • U-Bend Heat Exchanger Tubes: Bent into a U-shape for exchangers where compact construction and thermal expansion control are important.
  • Straight Heat Exchanger Tubes: Supplied in straight lengths for conventional shell and tube exchanger designs and easier installation.
  • Cold Drawn Heat Exchanger Tubes: Further processed to achieve closer dimensional tolerances and improved surface finish.
  • Boiler & Heat Recovery Tubes: Used in equipment such as economisers and heat recovery systems where the tubes face elevated temperatures and continuous heat transfer.

As a Carbon Steel Heat Exchanger Tubes Manufacturer, we can supply different tube forms, sizes, wall thicknesses, grades, and finishes according to the exchanger design and applicable standard.

ASTM A179 Heat Exchanger Tubes, ASTM A214 Condenser Tubes, ASTM A192 and A210 Tubes, U-Bend Tubes, Low Temperature Heat Exchanger Tubes, Carbon Steel Heat Exchanger Tubes Manufacturers and Suppliers in India

We are one of the carbon steel heat exchanger tubes manufacturer in India that exchanger builders and plant maintenance teams call when a tube bundle is on a deadline. We hold popular sizes in stock and draw other sizes to order.

For new exchangers, our ASTM A179 tubes go into condensers and shell and tube units in refineries, power plants, and chemical plants. For lower-cost units, our ASTM A214 welded tubes do the same job in low and medium pressure service. For higher pressure and temperature, our ASTM A192 and A210 tubes serve feedwater heaters and boiler-type exchangers. For cold plants, our ASTM A334 tubes stay tough at low temperature.

As a carbon steel heat exchanger tubes supplier, we make the tube ready for the tubesheet. We cut each tube to exact length, square the ends, clean the bore, and cap both ends, and we bend U-tubes to your radius. Every tube carries a heat number and a test record, so your inspector can trace it back to the mill certificate.

What Is the Difference Between ASTM A179 and ASTM A214 Carbon Steel Heat Exchanger Tubes?

The difference is the seam. ASTM A179 tubes are seamless and cold drawn, so they have no weld and hold the tightest size. ASTM A214 tubes are electric resistance welded, so they carry one heat-treated seam and cost less. Both are low carbon steel, both are soft enough to roll into a tubesheet, and both have the same low strength levels, so the choice comes down to price, pressure, and your design code.

Choose A179 when the exchanger runs at higher pressure, when the fluid is fouling or aggressive, or when the code gives seamless tubes a higher allowable stress. Choose A214 for low and medium pressure duties where cost matters.

To work out the weight of any size, use Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02466, with both values in mm. For heat transfer area, multiply the outside surface per metre by the tube length and the number of tubes.

Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02466

Common Materials Used in Carbon Steel Heat Exchanger Tubes

The material grade affects how heat exchanger tubes perform under different temperatures, pressures, and fluid conditions. We supply carbon steel tubes for heat exchangers, condensers, boilers, and low-temperature applications, with the material selected according to the required standard and service conditions.

ASTM A179: Low-carbon seamless tubes for heat exchangers and condensers.

ASTM A214: Welded carbon steel tubes for heat exchanger and condenser applications.

ASTM A192: Seamless tubes for high-pressure boiler and heat transfer service.

ASTM A210: Grades A-1 and C for boiler and superheater applications.

ASTM A334: Grades 1, 3, and 6 for low-temperature service.

Our role as Carbon Steel Heat Exchanger Tubes Suppliers includes providing the required grade, size, wall thickness, and delivery condition to match the applicable specification. Material test certificates, heat numbers, and inspection documents can also be supplied for proper traceability.

Available Sizes, Dimensions and Tolerances

We supply carbon steel heat exchanger tubes from 1/2" to 2" OD, in walls from 16 BWG (1.65 mm) to 10 BWG (3.40 mm), and larger sizes up to 4" OD on request. Tubes do not use schedule numbers. You give the outside diameter and the wall thickness, and the standard sets how far each can vary. BWG is the gauge number for wall thickness, and a lower BWG means a thicker wall. Always tell us whether your design uses the minimum wall or the average wall, because ASTM A179 and A214 define them differently, and your pressure calculation depends on the answer.

For U-bend tubes, remember that the outer side of the bend thins as the tube curves. TEMA guidance generally sets the minimum bend radius at about 1.5 times the tube OD. Tell us your bend radius and your minimum wall after bending, and we will confirm the wall to order before bending.

Standard lengths are 6 m, 9 m, and 12 m, plus exact cut lengths. As a carbon steel heat exchanger tubes supplier in India, we hold the common sizes in stock, subject to availability.

Carbon Steel Heat Exchanger Tubes FAQs

Common questions about carbon steel heat exchanger tube grades, sizes, standards, testing, and supply.

Which grade is best for heat exchanger tubes?

ASTM A179 is the standard choice for seamless exchanger and condenser tubes, and ASTM A214 is its welded equivalent. For higher pressure or temperature, step up to ASTM A192 or A210, and for cold service, choose ASTM A334.

Why must the tube be softer than the tubesheet?

The maker rolls the tube outward into the tubesheet hole. A softer tube yields and presses tightly against the harder tubesheet, which gives a leak-tight joint.

Should I choose seamless or welded tubes for an exchanger?

Choose seamless ASTM A179 for higher pressure, fouling services, and critical units. Choose welded ASTM A214 for low and medium pressure duties where cost matters.

What details should I send when I order tubes?

Send the grade and standard, outside diameter, minimum or average wall, tube length, quantity, straight or U-bend with the bend radius, end condition, and delivery port.

Do you supply U-bend tubes?

Yes. We bend tubes to your radius and cut them to your length. Tell us if your code requires heat treatment after bending, and we will confirm the route.

What is the minimum bend radius for a U-tube?

TEMA guidance generally sets it at about 1.5 times the tube OD. A tighter bend thins the wall at the outer side, so order a wall that still meets your minimum after bending.

Do carbon steel heat exchanger tubes corrode inside?

Carbon steel rusts when it sits in moist air. We oil or clean the bore and cap both ends, and you should include a corrosion allowance in the design for service with water or wet gases.

What sizes do your tubes come in?

We supply tubes from 1/2" to 2" OD, in walls from 16 BWG to 10 BWG, with sizes up to 4" OD on request.

What decides the price of carbon steel heat exchanger tubes?

Steel price, grade, seamless or welded process, size, wall thickness, tube length, U-bending, quantity, and delivery port all shape the price. Send us your enquiry for a current quote.

Which certificate comes with the tubes?

Every order ships with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate. We issue 3.2 with third-party inspection on request.

Are you a carbon steel heat exchanger tubes manufacturer or a supplier?

Both. We manufacture the tubes and also work as a carbon steel heat exchanger tubes supplier in India, with ready stock of popular sizes.

Do you export carbon steel heat exchanger tubes?

Yes. We ship to 85+ countries and handle export packing and paperwork.
