What Are Duplex Steel UNS S31803 Pipes and Tube?
Duplex Steel UNS S31803 Pipes and Tube are stainless steel products made from a 22% chromium, 5% nickel, 3% molybdenum alloy with added nitrogen. Its structure is roughly half austenite and half ferrite, which is why it is called duplex.
The ferrite phase adds strength and resistance to stress corrosion cracking. The austenite phase adds toughness and weldability. Nitrogen strengthens both and improves pitting resistance. Pipe is the product sold by nominal size and schedule. Tube is sold by exact outside diameter and wall, and is used for heat exchangers, condensers and instrument lines.

Duplex Steel UNS S31803 Pipes and Tube Mechanical Properties
| Property | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength | 620 MPa (90 ksi) min |
| Yield Strength (0.2% offset) | 450 MPa (65 ksi) min |
| Elongation | 25% min |
| Hardness | 290 HBW / 30.5 HRC max |

| Thermal Expansion (20–100 °C) | approx. 13.0 µm/m·°C |
Yield strength is the big advantage over 316L, which is about 170 MPa. That lets designers specify thinner walls for the same pressure, which cuts weight and cost.
Duplex Steel UNS S31803 vs S32205 Pipes and Tube
Buyers see both numbers on enquiries, and the difference is narrow. S32205 was added later with a slightly tighter chemistry window for better corrosion performance, especially higher chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen minimums.
| Point | UNS S31803 | UNS S32205 |
|---|---|---|
| Chromium | 21.0 – 23.0% | 22.0 – 23.0% |
| Molybdenum | 2.5 – 3.5% | 3.0 – 3.5% |
| Nitrogen | 0.08 – 0.20% | 0.14 – 0.20% |
| Nickel | 4.5 – 6.5% | 4.5 – 6.5% |
| Tensile Strength (min) | 620 MPa | 655 MPa |
| Yield Strength (min) | 450 MPa | 450 MPa |
| Typical PREN | About 34 – 36 | About 35 – 36 |
Most 2205 produced today is melted inside the S32205 range, which also falls inside the S31803 range, so it can be dual certified to both. If your specification names S31803 only, you can still receive S32205 pipe that meets it. If it names S32205, S31803 pipe that only meets the wider range is not acceptable. Tell us which number your drawing uses, and we will supply the right certificate.
Corrosion Resistance and Temperature Limits of Duplex Steel UNS S31803 Pipes and Tube
In chloride service, 2205 resists pitting and crevice corrosion far better than 316L. The critical pitting temperature in standard G48 testing is typically around 35 °C, compared with under 15 °C for 316L. Its ferrite content makes it highly resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking, which regularly kills 304 and 316 in hot, wet chloride lines.
Temperature sets the boundaries. Design codes generally limit 2205 to around 300 °C, because long exposure between roughly 300 and 525 °C can cause embrittlement, and between roughly 600 and 950 °C intermetallic phases such as sigma form. Low-temperature toughness is good, down to about −50 °C.
Fabrication matters too. Heat input must be controlled during welding to keep the austenite-ferrite balance intact, and the pipe must be solution annealed and quenched correctly at the mill. Pickling and passivation restore the surface after fabrication.

UNS S31803 offers higher strength and better resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking than many conventional austenitic stainless steel grades, such as 316L. However, its suitability depends on temperature, chloride concentration, operating pressure and other service conditions. For highly aggressive environments, super duplex grades such as UNS S32750 or S32760 may be more appropriate.
Duplex Steel UNS S31803 Pipes and Tube Manufacturers and Suppliers in India
Plenty of firms list "S31803 / S32205" in one breath. The real question is whether the pipe in front of you was annealed, quenched and tested properly, because duplex is sensitive to heat treatment. As a Duplex Steel UNS S31803 Pipes Manufacturer, we make the pipe, so we can show where each length came from.
We work the same way as a Duplex Steel UNS S31803 Tube Manufacturer, with tube cut and tested to your order. Buyers searching for a Duplex Steel UNS S31803 Pipes and Tube Supplier in India often need matching A182 F51 flanges, A815 fittings and 2205 plate too. We can quote the full package so grade and heat numbers line up across the job.
Duplex Steel UNS S31803 Pipes and Tube Size and Weight Chart
Weight per metre = (OD − wall) × wall × 0.0245, with OD and wall in mm. This uses a density of 7.80 g/cm³. Treat the numbers as estimates, since the real weight moves with the wall tolerance.
OD and wall are in mm. Multiply the result by the pipe or tube length to obtain the total weight.

Duplex Steel UNS S31803 Pipes and Tube Sizes, Dimensions and Schedules
Pipe runs from ⅛" up to 24" NB, from light Sch 5S and 10S to Sch 160 and XXS. Because duplex is strong, many designs can use a lighter schedule than they would in 316L, so check the wall against your code before you order. Tube is made to the OD and wall you specify, in the usual range for heat exchangers and instrument lines.
Pipes and tubes come in single random, double random or cut lengths. Ends can be plain, beveled for welding or threaded. For surface, annealed and pickled is standard, and bright annealed tube is available for cleaner duty. All product is supplied solution annealed and quenched, which restores the balanced structure that gives duplex its properties.
Duplex Steel UNS S31803 Pipes and Tubes Common Materials
Duplex Steel UNS S31803 Pipes and Tubes are available under different material designations used in industrial drawings, purchase orders and engineering specifications. These references help buyers identify the correct grade for piping systems, fittings, flanges and other components. We support customers looking for reliable Duplex Steel UNS S31803 Pipes and Tubes Suppliers by providing products according to specified grades and applicable standards.
