What Are ASTM A335 P22 Alloy Steel Pipes?
ASTM A335 P22 Alloy Steel Pipes are seamless chromium-molybdenum steel pipes designed for high-temperature and high-pressure applications. They contain chromium and molybdenum, which help maintain strength, improve oxidation resistance, and withstand prolonged heat exposure. These pipes are commonly used in power plants, refineries, petrochemical facilities, boilers, and steam pipelines where reliable performance under demanding operating conditions is essential.

ASTM A335 P22 Alloy Steel Pipes Standards
| Code | Used For |
|---|---|
| ASTM A335 / ASME SA335 | Governs seamless P22 pipe for high-temperature service |
| ASTM A999 | Sets general rules for tolerances, marking and testing |
| ASME B36.10M | Fixes pipe sizes and wall thicknesses |
| ASTM A213 (T22) | Covers the matching tube grade for boilers and exchangers |
| ASTM A234 WP22 | Covers butt-weld fittings in the same alloy |
| ASTM A182 F22 | Covers forged flanges and fittings |
| ASTM A691 (2¼CR) | Covers large welded pipe made from plate |
| EN 10216-2 | Covers European seamless pressure pipe in 10CrMo9-10 |
Each lot is proven by chemical analysis, tensile and flattening tests, and a hydrostatic or non-destructive check as the code requires. Positive material identification then confirms the chromium and molybdenum on the pipe itself. A third-party inspector is welcome at our works if your project asks for one.
ASTM A335 P22 Alloy Steel Pipes Material and Grades
Of all the A335 chrome-moly pipes, P22 is the grade that most plants use at the heart of their hot systems. ASTM A335 sets 1.90–2.60% chromium and 0.87–1.13% molybdenum, with carbon of 0.05–0.15% and silicon up to 0.50%.
In the A335 family, it sits above P11 in chromium and molybdenum and below P5 and P9 in chromium. Yet it keeps a real advantage over those two higher-chrome grades. It has strong, proven creep performance, a long track record in hydrogen service and good weldability.
When a drawing names P22 alongside extras such as hardness limits, impact testing or tramp-element limits, tell us when you enquire. That way we can choose and test the right heat from the start.
ASTM A335 P22 vs P11 and P91 Alloy Steel Pipes
P22 is the middle rung of the ladder most designers climb. Think of it as the step up from P11 and the step before P91.
| Point | P11 | P22 | P91 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nominal Composition | 1¼Cr-½Mo-Si | 2¼Cr-1Mo | 9Cr-1Mo-V-Nb |
| UNS Number | K11597 | K21590 | K90901 |
| Tensile / Yield (min) | 415 / 205 MPa | 415 / 205 MPa | 585 / 415 MPa |
| Typical Upper Range | Around 550 °C | Around 600 °C | Above 600 °C |
| Wall Thickness | Heavier | Medium | Thinner |
| Weldability | Easiest | Good | Needs tight control |
| Cost | Lowest | Middle | Highest |
Pick P22 when P11 is too light for the temperature or hydrogen load but P91 would be overkill. Choose P91 for high-temperature boiler pipework where its higher strength lets you cut wall thickness and weight.
Elevated Temperature and Corrosion Performance of ASTM A335 P22 Alloy Steel Pipes
P22 does its best work in hot steam and hot hydrogen. It resists creep well up to roughly 600 °C, and its chromium builds a protective scale in air.
In hydrocrackers and hydrotreaters, 2¼Cr-1Mo is a long-standing choice because it resists hot hydrogen attack better than carbon steel, within the limits of the Nelson curves. Its sulfur resistance is moderate. For sulfur-heavy streams, P5 or P9 gives more margin.
Know the one weak point before specifying it. In long service between about 375 and 575 °C, 2¼Cr-1Mo steels can lose toughness through temper embrittlement. Refinery specifications often counter this by capping phosphorus, tin, antimony and arsenic, using measures known as the J-factor and X-bar. If your unit needs this, say so at the enquiry stage.
Welding needs preheat of roughly 200–300 °C and post-weld heat treatment of roughly 700–760 °C, always as your welding procedure specification directs.
Because P22 is a low-alloy steel, it rusts in damp air. Keep it coated until it goes into service, and choose stainless or duplex where corrosion, not heat, is the problem.

| Sulfur (S) | 0.025 max |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.50 max |
| Chromium (Cr) | 1.90 – 2.60 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 0.87 – 1.13 |
| Iron (Fe) | Balance |

ASTM A335 P22 Alloy Steel Pipes Mechanical Properties
| Property | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength | 415 MPa (60 ksi) min |
| Yield Strength | 205 MPa (30 ksi) min |
| Elongation (longitudinal) | 30% min |
| Density | approx. 7.85 g/cm³ |
| Delivery Condition | Annealed, or normalized and tempered |
These are room-temperature minimums. At working temperature, allowable stress is lower, so take wall thickness from your design code at the actual operating temperature.
ASTM A335 P22 Alloy Steel Pipes Size and Weight Chart
Weight per metre = (OD − wall) × wall × 0.02466, with OD and wall in mm. Treat the answers as estimates, since the wall tolerance moves the real weight.
OD and wall are in mm. Multiply the result by the pipe length to obtain the total weight.

ASTM A335 P22 Alloy Steel Pipes Sizes, Dimensions and Schedules
P22 pipe comes from ½" up to 24" NB. Thin schedules such as 20 and 40 serve lower-pressure steam and heater piping. Sch 80 to XXS serve the heavy-duty end, where hydrogen pressure or main steam loads are high. Your design pressure and temperature decide the wall, and we can help you check it.
Where standard sizes fall short, we can make non-standard OD and wall pairs to drawing. Delivery is in single random, double random or cut lengths, with plain, beveled or threaded ends. A varnish or paint coat goes on before dispatch to keep rust away in transit and in the yard.
