Material and Grades of ASTM A106 Grade C Carbon Steel Pipes
Grade C is made from killed steel with at least 0.10% silicon, so the structure is clean and uniform. Its higher carbon, up to 0.35%, and its manganese range of 0.29–1.06% are what give it the extra strength.
The standard lets manganese rise above its limit when carbon is lower. For each 0.01% that carbon sits below 0.35%, manganese can go 0.06% above the stated maximum, up to 1.35%.
Hot finished pipe needs no final heat treatment. Cold drawn pipe is heat treated after the final draw, at 650°C or higher.
Grade C is produced in a narrower range of sizes and schedules than Grade B, and mills often make it to order. For that reason, it helps to share your size, wall and quantity early so we can confirm what can be supplied and when.

ASTM A106 Grade C Carbon Steel Pipes Sizes, Dimensions and Schedules
Grade C is mostly ordered in the heavier schedules, because that is where its strength pays off. Schedule numbers follow ASME B36.10M, and DN is the metric size for each NPS. Note that at 8 inch and above, XXS can be thinner than Sch 160, so check the wall on your drawing.
| Schedule | Wall at 4" / DN 100 (mm) | Wall at 10" / DN 250 (mm) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sch 80 / XS | 8.56 | 15.09 | High-pressure steam and process lines |
| Sch 160 | 13.49 | 28.58 | Very high pressure |
| XXS | 17.12 | 25.40 | Severe pressure and temperature |
Under ASTM A530, outside diameter tolerance is ±0.4 mm up to 1½ inch, ±0.8 mm above 1½ and up to 4 inch, +1.6/−0.8 mm above 4 and up to 8 inch, and +2.4/−0.8 mm above 8 and up to 18 inch. Wall thickness is held to −12.5%. We supply single random and double random lengths, and cut and bevel to your drawing.

| NDE and Charpy impact | Ultrasonic or eddy current, and impact testing, on request |
Welding and Fabrication of ASTM A106 Grade C Carbon Steel Pipes
Grade C welds well when the procedure is right, but its higher carbon and manganese make it more sensitive than Grade A or B. A few points matter on every job.
Preheat and interpass control reduce the risk of hardening and cracking in the heat-affected zone, and the amount depends on wall thickness, joint restraint and ambient temperature. Low-hydrogen electrodes such as E7018, kept dry, are the usual choice for stick welding. Post-weld heat treatment may be required by the code on heavier walls.
Avoid cold bending and close coiling. If a bend is needed, hot bending to a qualified procedure, or a Grade A or B pipe in that section, is the safer path. Ask us for the carbon equivalent of your heat if your welding engineer needs it.

FAQs
Common questions about ASTM A106 Grade C carbon steel pipes, strength, welding and supply.
Why is Grade C less common than Grade B?
Grade C is harder to weld and bend, and it is only needed when a high-pressure design takes advantage of its strength. For most projects, Grade B is enough and is easier to source.
How much wall can I save with Grade C?
Under ASME B31.3 at ambient temperature, Grade C allows about 14% thinner wall than Grade B for the same pressure. The saving shrinks at higher temperatures, so check your design conditions.
Does Grade C need preheat for welding?
Usually yes, especially on heavier walls and in cold conditions. The amount depends on wall thickness and your welding procedure, and post-weld heat treatment may apply under ASME B31.1 or B31.3.
What is the maximum working temperature?
Grade C is commonly used up to about 425°C. Above that, long exposure can cause graphitisation, and alloy pipes such as A335 P11 or P22 are used instead.
How do I calculate the weight of A106 pipe?
Use (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02466, with both values in mm, to get kg per metre. Multiply by length for total weight.
Which sizes and schedules can you supply in Grade C?
We supply Sch 80, 160 and XXS from ⅛ inch to 24 inches. Because Grade C is made to order more often than Grade B, share your size, wall and quantity early so we can confirm.
Which documents come with an order?
EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates are included. Inspection reports and third-party certificates are available on request.
