What Are ASTM A106 Grade B Carbon Steel Pipes?

ASTM A106 Grade B Carbon Steel Pipes are seamless pipes designed to carry hot fluids and gases under high temperatures and pressure. They are made from carbon steel with up to 0.30% carbon and 0.29–1.06% manganese, providing a balance of strength, toughness, and weldability. These pipes are widely used in refineries, power plants, boilers, and industrial process lines. They are also covered under the ASME SA106 Grade B specification for applications that require compliance with ASME standards.

Why Choose ASTM A106 Grade B Carbon Steel Pipes?

ASTM A106 Grade B Carbon Steel Pipes are widely used in industrial plants because they handle high-temperature service while providing the strength needed for pressurised piping systems. Their seamless construction makes them suitable for demanding applications where pipe integrity is important.

  • High Strength: Offers a minimum tensile strength of 415 MPa and a minimum yield strength of 240 MPa.
  • Heat Resistance: Designed for piping systems that carry hot fluids and gases at elevated temperatures.
  • Seamless Construction: Has no welded seam, making it suitable for demanding industrial piping applications.
  • Good Weldability: Can be joined using suitable welding procedures for carbon steel.
  • Wide Size Availability: Comes in different nominal sizes and schedules to meet varying design requirements.
  • Industrial Versatility: Commonly used in refineries, boilers, power plants, and process piping systems.

Grade B is a practical choice when a project needs a balance of strength, fabrication flexibility, and high-temperature performance. The correct pipe schedule and specifications should always match the operating pressure, temperature, and applicable design code.

Types of ASTM A106 Grade B Carbon Steel Pipes

As an ASTM A106 Grade B Carbon Steel Pipe Manufacturer, we supply different pipe options based on dimensional accuracy, wall thickness, surface protection, and installation needs. Each type serves a specific purpose in industrial piping systems.

  • Hot-Finished Seamless Pipe: Produced at high temperatures and commonly used in general industrial piping.
  • Cold-Drawn Seamless Pipe: Processed further to achieve closer dimensional tolerances and a smoother surface.
  • Schedule 40 Pipe: Offers a standard wall thickness for many process lines and utility systems.
  • Schedule 80 Pipe: Has a thicker wall than Schedule 40 in the same nominal size and may suit higher design pressure requirements.
  • Schedule 160 and XXS Pipe: Available for applications that require heavier walls, subject to the system’s design conditions.
  • Black and Coated Pipe: Supplied with a mill finish or protective coatings such as varnish, primer, or epoxy, depending on requirements.
  • Bevelled and Threaded Pipe: Prepared with bevelled ends for butt welding or threaded ends for compatible screwed connections.

The suitable type depends on operating pressure, temperature, pipe dimensions, and joining method. Selecting the correct specification helps ensure safe installation and reliable service.

Material and Grades of ASTM A106 Grade B Carbon Steel Pipes

A106 Grade B is made from killed steel, which means it is deoxidised with at least 0.10% silicon. That gives a clean, uniform structure that holds up in hot service.

The standard allows manganese to rise above its normal limit when carbon is lower. For each 0.01% that carbon sits below 0.30%, manganese can go 0.06% above the stated maximum, up to 1.35%. This lets mills reach the required strength with a lower carbon content, which helps welding.

Hot finished pipe needs no final heat treatment. Cold drawn pipe is heat treated after the final draw, at 650°C or higher, to restore ductility. Many projects specify dual or triple certification, such as A106 Grade B with A53 Grade B and API 5L Grade B. This is possible where the chemistry and properties meet each standard, so tell us at enquiry.

Choose A106 Grade B when the pipe is seamless and runs hot, as in steam, boiler and refinery lines. Choose A53 Grade B for general-purpose service where a welded pipe is acceptable. Choose API 5L Grade B for pipelines. Many buyers ask for dual certification so one pipe satisfies several of these standards at once.

Pressure Capacity of ASTM A106 Grade B Carbon Steel Pipes

The table gives an indicative working pressure for common sizes, using Barlow's formula P = 2 × S × t ÷ D, with an allowable stress S of 138 MPa (20 ksi, as used in ASME B31.3 at ambient temperature). It uses the nominal wall and no corrosion allowance. Allowable stress falls as temperature rises, and mill tolerance and joint design also reduce capacity. Final design must follow ASME B31.3 or B31.1 for your service.

P = (2 × S × t) ÷ D

P is pressure, S is allowable stress, t is wall thickness and D is outside diameter. The values below are indicative only and must be verified against the applicable design code.

ASTM A106 Grade B Carbon Steel Pipes Sizes, Dimensions and Schedules

Two pipes of the same nominal size can have very different walls, and the schedule is what tells them apart. Thicker walls carry more pressure but weigh more and cost more. Schedule numbers follow ASME B36.10M, and DN is the metric size for each NPS.

Schedule Wall at 3" / DN 80 (mm) Wall at 10" / DN 250 (mm) Typical use

XXS15.2425.40Severe pressure and temperature

Under ASTM A530, outside diameter tolerance is ±0.4 mm up to 1½ inch, ±0.8 mm above 1½ and up to 4 inch, +1.6/−0.8 mm above 4 and up to 8 inch, and +2.4/−0.8 mm above 8 and up to 18 inch. Wall thickness is held to −12.5%. We supply single random and double random lengths, and cut and bevel to your drawing.

FAQs

Common questions about ASTM A106 Grade B carbon steel pipes, grades, pressure, welding and supply.

Why is Grade B the most popular A106 grade?

It offers the best balance of strength, ductility and weldability for most steam and process lines. It is also listed in the main piping codes, which makes approval easier.

Is Grade B stronger than Grade A?

Yes. Grade B has a minimum tensile strength of 415 MPa and yield of 240 MPa, against 330 MPa and 205 MPa for Grade A. Grade A is more ductile and bends more easily.

Can A106 Grade B be used at low temperatures?

Where the code allows, it can be used without impact testing down to moderate low temperatures. For colder service, Charpy impact testing is available on request, or A333 Grade 6 may be the better choice.

What is the maximum working temperature?

Grade B is commonly used up to about 425°C. Above that, long exposure can cause graphitisation, and alloy pipes such as A335 P11 or P22 are used instead.

Does Grade B need preheat or post-weld heat treatment?

Thin walls usually need little or none. Thicker walls and cold conditions may need preheat, and post-weld heat treatment may apply under ASME B31.1 or B31.3. Follow your welding procedure.

How do I calculate the weight of A106 pipe?

Use (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02466, with both values in mm, to get kg per metre. Multiply by length for total weight.

Can A106 pipe be galvanised?

Yes. Pipe can be hot-dip galvanised for outdoor and water services. Tell us at enquiry so we can confirm what is suitable for your design.

What is the difference between Sch 40 and STD?

For sizes up to 10 inch, Sch 40 and STD have the same wall. For 12 inch and above, STD wall is slightly different, so check the wall on your drawing.

Which documents come with an order?

EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates are included. Inspection reports and third-party certificates are available on request.

Can you supply cut lengths and beveled ends?

Yes. Standard lengths are single random or double random, and we cut to length, bevel to ASME B16.25 and thread ends to your drawing.
