What Are Seamless Pipes?
A seamless pipe is a hollow steel pipe with no weld anywhere on it. The mill starts with a solid round bar called a billet, heats it until it glows, and pushes a pointed tool through the middle. That makes a thick hollow shell. Rolling and sizing then stretch the shell into a pipe with the right diameter and wall thickness.
Nothing is welded, so the wall has the same strength all the way around. No seam can crack, leak, or corrode faster than the rest of the pipe. That is why engineers pick seamless pipes for high pressure, high temperature, and dangerous fluids like steam, hydrocarbons, and acids. If a failure would hurt people or shut down a plant, seamless is the safe choice.
Seamless Pipes
High-quality seamless pipes manufactured for demanding applications across oil & gas, petrochemical, power generation, chemical processing, construction, and engineering industries. Available in multiple materials, sizes, wall thicknesses, grades, and manufacturing specifications.
How Seamless Pipes Are Made
Every seamless pipe goes through the same basic journey:
- Billet heating. The mill heats a solid round billet to about 1,200°C in a furnace, so the steel turns soft enough to shape.
- Piercing. A piercing mill pushes a pointed plug through the centre of the billet. The billet becomes a thick, rough hollow shell.
- Rolling. Rolls squeeze the shell over a mandrel or plug. This stretches it longer and cuts the wall down to size.
- Sizing. Sizing rolls bring the pipe to its final outside diameter and make it round.
- Heat treatment. The pipe is normalized, annealed, or quenched and tempered. This sets its strength, toughness, and grain structure.
- Straightening and cutting. Straightening machines remove bends, then saws cut the pipe to length.
- Testing and finishing. Every pipe faces hydrostatic and NDT checks. Then the mill bevels the ends, applies the finish, marks the pipe, and packs it.
Different mills suit different jobs:
| Method | What It Does Best |
|---|---|
| Plug mill | Medium to large hot finished carbon and alloy pipe |
| Mandrel mill | Fast, even production of small to medium sizes |
| Pilger mill | Large diameter and thick wall pipe |
| Hot extrusion | Stainless steel, duplex, nickel alloy, and heavy wall pipe |

Hot Finished vs Cold Drawn Seamless Pipes
This is the first choice most buyers face, so here is the plain answer. Hot finished pipe is shaped while the steel is hot. Cold drawn pipe starts as a hot finished pipe, then gets pulled through a die at room temperature. The extra pull tightens the size, smooths the surface, and adds strength.
Choose hot finished for pipelines, boilers, refinery lines, and structural work. Choose cold drawn when you need tight tolerances or a clean bright finish, such as for hydraulic lines, instrumentation, and precision machinery.
| Point | Hot Finished Seamless Pipes | Cold Drawn Seamless Pipes |
|---|---|---|
| How It Is Made | Shaped hot in the mill | Drawn cold from a hot finished pipe |
| Typical Size | 1/2" to 24" NPS | Small to medium, up to about 6" OD |
| Tolerance | Standard | Tighter |
| Surface | Black or scaled | Smooth and bright |
| Wall Range | Medium to heavy | Thin to medium |
| Strength | Standard for the grade | Higher after drawing |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Best For | Pipelines, boilers, refineries | Instrumentation, hydraulics, precision parts |
Seamless Pipes vs Welded Pipes
Welded pipes start as flat strip or plate. Mills roll the strip into a round and weld the seam shut. Modern welds are strong, and welded pipes cost less. But the seam is still the place where trouble starts if the pipe sees high pressure, thermal cycling, or corrosive fluid.
Seamless pipes cost more because the process is slower and uses solid billets. You pay for even strength and fewer failure points. For water lines and low-pressure service, welded pipe often does the job. For critical lines, most specifications ask for seamless.
| Point | Seamless Pipes | Welded Pipes |
|---|---|---|
| Seam | None | One weld seam |
| Made From | Solid round billet | Strip, coil, or plate |
| Strength | Even all around | Seam can be the weak point |
| Pressure and Heat | High | Low to medium |
| Size Range | 1/8" to 24" | 1/2" to 48" |
| Price | Higher | Lower |
| Best For | Boilers, refineries, pipelines, hydraulic lines | Water, structures, low-pressure service |
Types of Seamless Pipes We Manufacture
Carbon steel seamless pipes are the workhorse of the industry. ASTM A106 Gr. B carries steam and hot fluids. ASTM A53 Gr. B suits general service. API 5L Gr. B to X70 serves oil and gas pipelines.
Low temperature seamless pipes stay tough in extreme cold. ASTM A333 Gr. 1 and Gr. 6 work down to -45°C, so LNG, liquid nitrogen, and cold-climate lines use them.
Alloy steel seamless pipes add chromium and molybdenum. ASTM A335 P5, P9, P11, P22, and P91 resist creep and oxidation in power plant and refinery steam lines.
Stainless steel seamless pipes resist rust and chemicals. ASTM A312 covers 304/304L, 316/316L, 321, 347, 310S, and 904L.
Duplex and super duplex seamless pipes combine high strength with strong chloride resistance. ASTM A790 covers S32205 and S32750 for offshore, desalination, and subsea use.
Nickel alloy seamless pipes handle the harshest jobs. Inconel 625, Incoloy 825, Monel 400, and Hastelloy C276 stand up to hot acids, seawater, and extreme heat.

Seamless Pipe Size and Schedule Chart
Many buyers mix up the schedule number and the wall thickness. The schedule is a code, not a measurement. A higher schedule means a thicker wall for the same pipe size, but the same schedule gives a different wall in mm at each NPS. The outside diameter stays fixed for each NPS, so the bore shrinks as the wall grows.
Also remember that NPS is a name, not a measurement. A 4" NPS pipe measures 114.3 mm on the outside, not 101.6 mm.

To work out the weight of any size yourself, use this formula with both values in mm:
Stainless steel pipe weighs about 2% more than carbon steel. We supply larger sizes up to 24" NPS and heavier schedules on request.
How to Check the Pressure Rating of a Seamless Pipe
Buyers often ask, "How much pressure can this pipe take?" A quick check uses the Barlow formula:
P is the pressure, S is the allowable stress of the material, T is the wall thickness, and D is the outside diameter.
Here is a worked example. Take a 4" SCH 80 A106 Gr. B pipe. The OD is 114.3 mm and the wall is 8.56 mm. Allowable stress at room temperature is about 138 MPa (20 ksi).
Mills may deliver a wall up to 12.5% thinner than nominal. Use 7.49 mm and the result drops to about 18.1 MPa (181 bar).
Seamless Pipe Coatings, End Finishes and Packing
Surface finish and coating. Carbon steel seamless pipes ship black, varnished, or oiled. For buried or offshore lines, we can add 3LPE, FBE, epoxy, or hot dip galvanizing. Stainless steel pipes come annealed and pickled, or polished in 180, 240, or 400 grit.
End finish. Plain ends suit pipes that will be cut or welded on site. Bevelled ends (37.5°) are ready for butt welding. Threaded ends fit small-bore lines.
Packing. We bundle pipes with steel straps, fit plastic caps on the ends, and pack in wooden cases or crates for export. Pipes for sea freight get extra rust protection.
Seamless Pipes Testing and Certificates
A pipe is only as good as the proof behind it. We test every batch and hand you the papers to show it.
Tests we run:
- Chemical analysis on every heat
- Tensile, yield, and elongation tests
- Flattening and bend tests
- Hydrostatic test on every length
- Ultrasonic and eddy current testing for hidden flaws
- PMI to confirm the grade
- IGC test for stainless grades
- Impact test for A333 low-temperature pipes
- Hardness tests where the standard asks for them

Applications of Seamless Pipes
Oil and gas. Seamless line pipe carries crude, gas, and refined products across long distances. It handles high pressure and rough handling in the field.
Refineries and petrochemical plants. Furnace tubes and process lines run hot and carry corrosive fluids. Alloy grades like P11, P22, and P91 keep their strength at high temperature.
Power generation. Boilers, superheaters, and steam headers push pipes to their limits. Seamless pipes take the pressure and the heat cycles.
Chemical and fertilizer plants. Stainless and duplex seamless pipes resist acids, alkalis, and high-pressure ammonia and urea service.
Desalination and water treatment. Duplex and super duplex pipes stand up to seawater and chlorides that eat plain steel.
LNG and cryogenic lines. A333 low-temperature pipes stay tough at -45°C and keep from cracking in the cold.
Shipbuilding and marine. Cooling, ballast, and fire-fighting lines see constant salt exposure.
Automotive, hydraulic, and machinery work. Cold drawn seamless pipes give the tight size control these parts need.

Frequently Asked Questions About Seamless Pipes
Common questions about seamless pipe grades, sizes, standards and supply.
Seamless pipes are manufactured without a welded longitudinal seam, while welded pipes are formed from plate or strip and joined by welding. The suitable type depends on pressure, temperature, material, dimensions and the applicable project specification.
Hot finished seamless pipes are formed at elevated temperature. Cold drawn seamless pipes are further processed through a die at controlled temperature to achieve tighter dimensional tolerances and a smoother surface finish.
Common grades include ASTM A106 Gr. B, ASTM A53, API 5L grades, ASTM A333 low-temperature grades, ASTM A335 alloy steel grades, ASTM A312 stainless steel grades and ASTM A790 duplex grades.
Seamless pipes can be supplied from small bore sizes through larger sizes up to 24 inches NPS, depending on the grade, manufacturing route, wall thickness and order requirements. Custom lengths and selected schedules are also available.
Depending on the material and application, seamless pipes can be supplied to standards such as ASTM A106, ASTM A333, ASTM A335, ASTM A312, ASTM A790, API 5L and applicable ASME specifications.
